Transport company gets special privileges
Jalandhar, June 5 While the Municipal Corporation has done patch work only in front of the company's office and allowed it to use its land under the ROB for parking of buses, the cops have been put on a permanent alert outside the office. While the city roads, especially on the periphery of the bus stand, are in a bad shape, the stretch just in front of the office of the company, which was already in a good condition has been recarpeted by the Municipal Corporation. Ignoring the condition of all the roads around the bus stand in front of the three entrances to it, the Municipal Corporation chose to give a preferential treatment to the company for reasons best known to it. The commuters have to daily pass across the deep craters to enter or come out of the bus stand. Similarly, the cops too have been ensuring the provision of a police vehicle right in front of the company's office for the past two months, guarding it day and night. It was around the same time that the company had changed hands and set up a new plush office in Rajinder Nagar, located across the bus stand, from where a few hundred people daily board a bus to Delhi airport. While all the other naka or security check-points in the city keep changing, this one does not change despite the fact that these are lean days for the NRIs shuttling between India and abroad. In contrast, barring a police post in one corner of the bus stand, there is no such round-the-clock vigil in front of the entry points to the bus stand. The security checks too are occasional and done primarily ahead of national and religious festivals or in the event of any perceived threat. The transport company has also been allowed to illegally use a huge space in front of its office under the Lyallpur Khalsa College ROB for parking its buses. There are three to six buses of the company parked on the MC land at any time of the day. Municipal Commissioner Manpreet Singh Chattwal said no specific favours had been extended to the company's office. “We have been doing patchworks for the rest of the city as well. Regarding the bus stand, we called tenders for the road work around it yesterday.” On the issue of the use of MC land by the company for parking of buses, he said he was planning to call tenders for it in the coming days. Deputy Commissioner of Police Naveen Singla said he would look into the matter. Asked if the company had sought security, he said, “I will have to check that.” Harman, a representative of the transport company, confirmed that his company had sought security from the police owing to which a PCR vehicle remains parked in front of it. company’s clout * Similarly, the cops too have been ensuring the provision of a police vehicle right in front of the company's office for the past two months, guarding it day and night. CK series gets just 50 bidders in online auction
Jalandhar, June 5 While only 64 vanity numbers out of a total of 265 in the PB-08-CJ series had last time gone through e-auction, this time, the response has fallen further with the PB-08-CK series getting only 50 bidders. While a manual auction of the fancy numbers used to fetch the DTO office an amount of Rs 20 lakh for a series, an amount of just Rs 15.76 lakh had been collected by the office after the first online auction held in mid-March. Since the bidding of the CK series concluded just two days back, there is still time for the successful bidders to make the payment of the bidding amount. While the 0001 number with a reserve price of Rs 5 lakh had gone for Rs 5.11 lakh in CJ series, it went for just Rs 5.02 lakh this time. There have been no bidders for the next 34 numbers in the series with 0036 number going for Rs 1 lakh, the reserve price. The second two-digit number to go in e-auction is 0081 which too has gone on a reserve price of Rs 1 lakh. There is a little appreciation of the amount in the auction for 0100 number. The number with the lowest bid amount fixed at Rs 50,000 went for Rs 54,000. Similarly, all the other numbers in the series also went with just a minor difference from the base price. The staff of the DTO office said while earlier, it had been decided that the fancy numbers of a series would be auctioned just once, it had now been decided that they would be carried forward in the next auction. The department has also decided that the 265 fancy numbers would only be delivered by way of auction. Those crazy for vanity numbers have been claiming that the department has all of a sudden jacked up prices to earn big revenue owing to which the response was slow. They have also been claiming that little publicity was being done by the department ahead of auction The staff, however, said that insertions had been given in the media as was being done earlier during the manual auction. |
Drug Licensing Authority returns empty-handed as godown owner flees in police presence
Blames policemen for letting the godown owner flee Nikhil Bhardwaj Tribune News Service
Jalandhar June 5
The Zonal Licensing Authority has categorically blamed the police officials for helping a chemist shop owner flee from the spot. They quipped that had the police officials, accompanying them for security purposes, remained alert, the chemist shop owner would not have fled. Now, due to the absence of a godown owner, drug officials said they cannot enter the locked premises to inspect the suspected medicines, which could be misused in the market. They even alleged that due to the lethargic approach of police officials, they had to wait for over five hours outside the godown. Gurbinder Singh, the Zonal Licensing Authority, said they had received information that Rakesh Kumar, owner of Wadhwa Agencies in Gopal Nagar, had stored medicines, suspected to be habit-forming or banned drugs, at his unlicensed godown near his chemist shop. "We along with the police officials from police station division number 1 first conducted raids on a chemist shop opposite the godown but recovered nothing objectionable. Later, we told the owner, Rakesh, to open the godown for inspection but he started making excuses that he did not have the keys," Singh said. Later, the owner, in the presence of the police, was told to bring the keys of the godown. While the owner was leaving the spot on the pretext of bringing the keys, police officials didn't dare to accompany the owner despite the suspicion that he might flee, the drug official asserted. They also alleged that now the police was denying the deployment of any security outside the godown. "If the police will not deploy guards outside the godown, the owner might remove the medicines," he said, adding that until and unless the police nab the owner, they cannot break open the premises. "Even after five hours in the evening, the owner didn't turn up with the keys. We have now sealed the godown and requested the police to deploy guards to prevent the owner from removing the suspected medicines," Singh alleged. When questioned if the godown owner managed to flee in their presence, assistant sub-inspector Mangat said the police was not present when the owner fled on the pretext of bringing keys of the godown. When asked why the cops were not being deployed for security purposes, he said the SHO had so directed. Commissioner of Police, Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, when contacted, said he would look into the matter. |

Muskmelon farmers suffers losses, no compensation scheme in place
Jalandhar, June 5 The melon crop needs ample temperature in the month of May, when it is about to mature, for harvest. But because of the unexpected rainfall last month, the crop suffered blight, which has affected production. Blight is a fungus disease afflicting melon and cucumber, which damages the tissues of the stem at all stages of development. It is a contagious disease which can spread across a field of fruits. Joga Singh of Chakk Chela village in Shahkot Tehsil, who had 55 acres of land under the muskmelon crop, said he was very disappointed with the production this year. The temperature has been around 40 degree Celsius. Had the same temperature ben there around 20 days ago, the yield would have been much better. But who is to blame for that? "We cannot even manage to get the input costs so far. I am getting 20 per cent less yield this year. The government must provide muskmelon farmers with compensation," he added. He said 15 per cent land was under muskmelon farming this year as compared to last year. Sulakhan Singh of the same village had 20 acres of land under the muskmelon crop. Sulakhan Singh said on the one hand, there has already been less production this year and on the other, the wholesale price of the crop is also not satisfactory. The wholesale price of the crop is Rs 2 to Rs 2.50 per kg, which is too less whereas the retail price is Rs 10 to Rs 15 per kg. "It was very costly to treat the disease in the last stage, yet we did spray medicines that cost us Rs 1,300 per litre," he said. He said in the previous years, the farmers used to sell their crop for Rs 30,000 to Rs 35,000 per acre. But now, they are getting only Rs 20,000 per acre or less, which hardy fulfils the input cost. When contacted, Horticulture Development Officer Dr Bhajan Singh Saini said there is no such scheme by the government to provide the farmers with compensation. They ask for survey reports sometimes about the damages to fruit and vegetable crops. However, no compensation has ever been paid, Saini added. |

PGSC celebrates World Environment Day
Jalandhar, June 5 The function was presided over by environmentalist Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal. Speaking on the occasion, Seechewal said the country had been facing water scarcity these days, as the groundwater level had gone down drastically. In order to deal with the issue, the present lifestyle had to be changed. The present scenario to merge the polluted water in free flowing natural rivers had to be blocked. “If we succeed in controlling the same, the water level and quality will automatically improve,” said Seechewal. He said in India, when it rains, people have to suffer severe floods, but when rains stop, people face droughts. This was happening because the water was not recharging in the earth. “If the water recharges properly, we will never face such a situation. Moreover, water can be preserved for the coming generations,” Seechewal said Dr Neelima Jerath, Director General, Science City, said every year, on June 5, millions of people across the world celebrate World Environment Day. She said people must come together at the community, national and regional level to promote positive action on the most-pressing environmental challenges of the day. Padma Shri awardee Baba Sewa Singh said, “We should keep our surroundings clean.” A lecture on wetland conservation was delivered by Dr R Grover, Director,
