AAP ticket hopefuls protest ‘raw deal’
New Delhi, March 9 When asked, AAP leaders said, "The whole fuss is being created just to grab media attention and it is by a handful of people who have been vying for tickets. This won't impact the party's work as the party has kept its entire functioning transparent." The protest happened this morning before the former Delhi Chief Minister started his journey to Mathura where he addressed a rally later during the day. The AAP also rubbished news reports published in a section of the media that its party convenor Arvind Kejriwal had accepted Z category of security when he was the Chief Minister of Delhi. Taking exception to the news reports on the security issue, the party called it 'misleading' and something done at the "at the behest of Ministry of Home Affairs and Delhi Police who the party said "have been changing their stand consistently on the issue according to their convenience". AAP leaders condemned saying that Arvind Kejriwal has consistently refused to accept any Z security, yet some newspapers and TV channels run stories allegedly to twist facts to spark controversies just to divert attention from the pro-people issues being raised by the party leadership. Kejriwal's written statements have been in public domain as well as with the police brass, AAP stated while demanding that the newspaper concerned which claimed that Arvind Kejriwal accepted Z category of security should put in public domain the letter of acceptance to substantiate its claim. "The real intention behind this motivated campaign appears to be highly suspect. By giving credence to unsubstantiated news reports, the MHA and Delhi Police only appear to be encouraging unwanted elements to take advantage of the situation at this delicate point when the Lok Sabha election campaign is under way," said the AAP. The party urged volunteers and the public to ignore such campaigns and continue to focus on the real issues of "corruption, communalism, dynastic politics and criminalisation" during the coming elections. |

Kamala Market likely to make way for high-rise complex
New Delhi, March 9 "Commercial spaces like Kamala Market and Ghaffar Market, only couple of storey high and built years ago, have now grown decrepit and are occupying space. By replacing them with modern commercial complexes we seek to utilise the space as well as increase the revenues for the civic body," said NDMC Standing Committee Chairman Mohan
Bhardwaj. Built in the 1950s and named after the wife of first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Kamala Market now faces an uncertain future. The old market, inaugurated by the first President Rajendra
Prasad, with its now-faded clock-tower, located next to the New Delhi railway station is part of the city's immediate post-colonial heritage. "As part of the budget for this year, we looked into ways of augmenting our revenues and these old markets, among others, we thought could become sources of revenues," Bhardwaj
said. Ghaffar Market, located in central Delhi's Karol Bagh and also built in the 1950s, and famous for its 'dubious' electronic goods too is most likely to make way for a high-rise complex, the Corporation said. Built with a cost of Rs 5.3
lakh, it was once Delhi's spacious market but is now largely crowded owing to increasing population and vehicular traffic and parking problems. But shopkeepers at Kamala Market are not so happy at the prospect of losing "one of the oldest markets in the city" after Independence. "You can look at the condition here, decaying walls, the clock-tower that doesn't work, and people urinating around its premises, it is awful. And, instead of dismantling it, why can't they just restore it as a heritage market? It will also bring revenues from tourism," a shopkeeper
said. NDMC officials when inquired about preserving its heritage value said, "parts of it could be preserved". "Well, if it was inaugurated by the first President, and has some history attached to, like the clock-tower, then it (clock-tower) could be preserved and taken inside a quadrangle, meshing with the new complex, thus marrying history with development," NDMC Public Relations Officer Yogendra Singh Mann
said. — PTI |
