City gets Central aid for bus scheme
Bathinda, September 18 Confirming this here today, Municipal Commissioner Uma Shankar Gupta said the Centre would give this grant under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) meant for the cities with smaller population. Gupta had pleaded the case during his visit to Delhi yesterday. The grant will be received in three instalments. In the first instalment, 50 per cent grant will be released, followed by 20 per cent and later 10 per cent. The first grant will be released when MCB places order for the 20 minibuses. The second grant will be released after the buses are bought and third instalment of 10 per cent will find itself into the MCB’s account when the project takes off. The MCB has been directed to ensure that the project has a dedicated body to run it so that it does not become yet another unsuccessful venture. The MCB already has a mechanism in place for it as it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the PRTC for operating this bus service and has dedicated parking lots for the same at PRTC depots. The JNNURM has had past bitter experiences wherein cities have taken grants, but have failed to run bus services efficiently leading to dumping of money. Emphasis will be ushering in mandatory reforms with the release of first instalment of payment. Also, the money will not be directly given to the MCB. The grant will be disbursed only through intermediary financial banking institution. In order to meet with this, the MCB plans to request HUDCO to grant it Rs 3 crore loan in addition to the Rs 105 crore borrowed for sewer and water supply. “As soon as we get the grants from the Central Government, HUDCO’s Rs 3 crore loan will be cleared,” he added. Depending on the performance of grants given, the JNNURM has also proposed to help the MCB with the 100 per cent sewer and water providing project. Buoyed over positive response received from the JNNURM, the MCB plans to soon submit the detailed project report for the sewerage and water projects also. “This means that for the Rs 105-crore project, we will get 80 per cent assistance from the Centre. The city bus project has opened gates for us, providing us with a benchmark to improve ourselves and get help under the Central projects,” Gupta added. Bathinda city has more projects in offing, including the solid waste management plant and elevated road, which too can get funds under the same scheme. The 20 buses to be received under the scheme will cover all areas of Bathinda, especially the ones located in trans railway lines localities. It will also connect the city with nearby villages that has been a long- pending demand of residents. Fact file

Cancer patients, kin support BFUHS assistant professor
Bathinda, September 18 Throwing weight behind him, office-bearers of the Bhai Ghanaiya Cancer Roko Sewa Society, cancer patients and their kin said today that Dr Jaura was falsely framed into a well-greased network working within the Faridkot medical college. The Bathinda police had booked Dr Jaura on the complaint of a cancer patient, Usha Rani, a resident of Peerkhana Wali gali who had alleged the oncologist of duping her. She had alleged that instead of getting her treated from the Faridkot medical college, Dr Jaura got her treatment done from Pragma Hospital on Bhatti Road in Bathinda. Kultar Singh and Gurpreet Singh Chandbhan, president, of the Bhai Ghanaiya Cancer Roko Sewa Society, said Dr Jaura was a whistle-blower who had objected to the wrong medicines being prescribed to cancer patients at the medical college. “He has been framed for raising his voice against the system and a well-knit nexus of pharmacists, chemists and doctors inside the university,” they alleged. Expressing solidarity with Dr Jaura, the cancer patients and their kin who were present said he had been instrumental in providing them a new lease of life. Mithu Singh from Gandua village in Sangrur said his wife was undergoing cancer treatment from Dr Jaura at the medical college and that the oncologist did not take any money from her. Similarly, treatment of several other persons is being conducted under him. They alleged that Dr Jaura used to examine patients even after the OPD hours, which perhaps would have created a sense of insecurity among other doctors who conspired against him. Chandbhan and Kultar said the NGO, in collaboration with 15 other NGOs, would hold massive dharnas and start a campaign demanding government to take action against the strong nexus of doctors and pharmaceutical companies at the college. They said the patients would be a part of the campaign that would be run to restore his maligned image. Demanding justice for Dr Jaura, they said a high-level probe should be conducted into the entire episode so that the real culprits were exposed. Dr Jaura was not available for comments as his phone was switched off. It is learnt that he has moved an application in the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking anticipatory bail, which will come up for hearing tomorrow. The Vice-Chancellor of BFUHS, Faridkot, SS Gill, said he would not be able to comment on Dr Jaura’s case as the matter is now in the hands of police. About the allegations levelled on nexus working in medical college, he said he had not received any written complaint and hence, could not say anything in the matter. |
Work begins on CM’s dream project
Bathinda, September 18 The Chief Minister had announced the project during a function held on the GZS PTU campus on July 26 to inaugurate the two new facilities for students of the campus. “The government has decided that students of government schools who secure 80 per cent or above marks in the Class X examinations will be given Rs 30,000 per annum under the Shri Har Gobind Khurana Scholarship Scheme. A sum of Rs 2,500 will be transferred to their accounts every month,” he had said. He had added that the government was planning to set up a school for such students in Bathinda. “It will provide them all facilities, including hostel facilities, to hone their skills.” Confirming the information, director of the campus, Dr Jasbir Singh Hundal, said: “Close to 8-10 acres of land on the premises of the campus has been given for the project. We were asked if the campus authorities were planning to use the piece of land for developing any facility for students. Since, we didn’t have any immediate plans to do so, we gave away the land for the CM’s project.” He added that the land of the campus anyway belongs to the Department of Technical Education, Punjab. “The land that had been earmarked for the school project was along the Badal road and the school would have separate entry and exit points,” the director said. |
UPA govt has failed people: MP
Bathinda, September 18 Speaking to the media after holding a series of sangat darshan programmes in Bathinda district, the MP said the Congress-led UPA government was given two consecutive terms to serve the country but instead of eradicating poverty, the government intentionally targeted the poor population by formulating economic policies to favour multi-national companies and harming the interests of the public. She added that the Congress could never win the hearts of the electorate through hollow political gimmicks and false promises, especially when the general elections are round the corner. "Not even a single below-poverty line (BPL) card was made by the Central Government in the past two years and now the party is talking about the poor and poverty," she claimed. Comparing the UPA regime with that of the NDA, she said the then Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee had taken steps that helped in regulating the fiscal deficit. The GDP at that time was 8.4 per cent and India was in a position to strike business deals with any country. "Now, India has been forced to sign on the dotted line because of our crumbling economic situation," she said and added, "It is unfortunate that despite being headed by a renowned economist like Dr Manmohan Singh, the country is inching closer towards a financial crunch." Also present during the sangat darshan programme were the Deputy
Commissioner, Bathinda, Kamal Kishor Yadav, SSP Ravcharan Brar, SDM, Tawandi Sabo, Shruti and leaders workers. |
Team from GZS PTU shines at software development contest
Bathinda, September 18 They are among the top 15 teams in India. Only two teams have qualified from North India. Out of the two teams, one is from the GZS PTU campus. More than one lakh teams from all over India participated in the online competition. Only four teams have been selected from Punjab for the second round. The GZS-PTU campus team, named Bytecoderz, comprising the students of B.Tech Computer Science & Engineering, Sapna Sharma, Rishi Gargi, Jagjit Singh and Ankur Bansal, succeeded in qualifying for the final round under the guidance of their mentor and guide Sanjay Bhatnagar. The team took it as a challenge and gained hands on experience of working as a team on a live project named 'I-Campus'. In the project, they designed and developed a web portal which helps a university in academic activities. Parents can not only share the performance of their wards online but also view their progress on this portal. They can also interact with the subject teacher online or send the progress report through the portal. The portal helps the faculty members mark the attendance of the students which is used to calculate the attendance for further processing. It also helps to calculate the session-wise results of the class. Students can check their results, attendance records and send queries to their teachers. Employees can send their leave applications and perform many more activities through this. Campus director Dr Jasbir Singh Hundal appreciated their work and wished that they would achieve success in future too. They also said that all other students must take inspiration from these students to take the college to new heights. Fact file

Large crowd turns out to witness immersion of
Bathinda, September 18 Interestingly, the crowded street processions complete with blaring music, bandwallahs and then the raising of the 'Ganpati Bappa Morya' slogans during the immersion, vouched for the fact that the festival, which is celebrated with gusto in Maharashtra, seems to have found favour among the Punjabis and others in Bathinda. "Devotees can install the idols at their home for the number of days that they wish to. While a few keep the idol at home for a single day, for others it may go up to ten. The idol is to be immersed in the water on the last day with the wish that the God will come back to our homes the next year too," said, Brahmeshwar Kumar, a priest at a local temple. He also agreed that over the years, an increasing number of residents of the city have started celebrating the festival with fervour. "The reason behind is the fact that several new companies have opened their offices in and around the city and consequently, people from different parts of the country are coming here for work and are bringing with them different cultures and related festivals," said the priest. At the Sirhind Canal, some of the devotees, who had taken it upon themselves to immerse the idol in the water, were saved by others from slipping into the water themselves. While on Wednesday evening, all roads seemed to be leading to the Sirhind Canal, the traffic police personnel failed miserably in controlling the traffic as the long processions led to equally long traffic snarls. As trucks carrying the idols were followed by vehicles carrying the bands playing hymns and songs dedicated to the deity, devotees flooded the GT road and traffic came to a standstill for close to half an hour. |
