Little did the 34-year-old man, who was rushed to the AIIMS Jai Prakash Narayan Trauma Centre’s casualty around 2 pm yesterday, know that his reckless attempt at throwing a water balloon from the third floor of his house would cost him his life.

“The man had a fall from the third floor of the building and was brought to us with head, neck and multiple injuries. We could resuscitate him briefly but he succumbed,” said Dr MC Misra, the chief of AIIMS Trauma Centre.

Besides him, Dr Misra confirmed a rise in the number of patients, with 350 patients turning up at the casualty on the day of Holi, with the break-up being 21 patients under the red (with severe injuries), 86 patients were seen in the yellow division (those with mild to moderate fractures, lacerations etc) and 243 cases in the green category related to patients who required suturing, dressing or X-ray if required.

“Year after year cases are climbing during Holi, with 286 cases in 2010, 312 in 2011, 327 in 2012 and 350 this time. Patients came with head injuries, bruises and fractures. Many of them were intoxicated,” said Dr Misra.

Similarly, in several other government hospitals such as Dr Ram Manohar Lohia and Safdarjung, Lok Nayak, Guru Tegh Bahadur, cases of reckless driving and intoxication following alcohol consumption were more than those related to eye and skin injuries.

Need to improve policing,says Walia
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, March 28
A heated debate ensued between the ruling and opposition parties in the meeting of Delhi Assembly over the issue of deteriorating law and order situation in the city.

In a short-duration discussion on the law and order in the city, Delhi Health Minister Dr AK Walia today underlined the need to improve policing in Delhi, keeping in view the present law and order situation.

“The government would continue to impress upon the Police Commissioner to inculcate a sense of security among people, including women,” said Dr Walia.

He was replying to a discussion initiated by the opposition leader VK Malhotra.

Giving statistics, he said that 83,000 police personnel have been deployed in Delhi with 161 territorial police stations which means one police station for 1,15,000 people.

Dr Walia also stated that during 2011, 543 cases of murder were registered in Delhi whereas in Madhya Pradesh, the figure was 2,511, Bihar 3,198, Gujarat 1,126 and Chhatisgarh 1,110.

During the discussion, Malhotra said it would be decided by Parliament whether the Delhi police is to be handed over to the Delhi government.

“The police forces are used in various manners such as checking unauthorised constructions, licensing and installations of borewells which simply takes the focus away from maintaining the law and order in the city,” he said.

Parliamentary Secretary to CM Mukesh Sharma demanded a revamp of the police system in Delhi. He suggested separate police commissioners for New Delhi and the remaining city.
