Road rage: Youth shot at
New Delhi, March 25 A police officer said he wanted to lodge a complaint against the injured youth, Vikas, and his three friends, Romin Bhardwaj, Hukum, and Suresh, all aged between 18 and 21 years. The youths sell clothes on the streets of east Delhi's Laxmi Nagar locality. "He told us that he was beaten up by the youths and in self-defence, he fired at them. Vikas was injured in the firing. After we investigated the incident, we learnt that it was his fault and arrested him for attempted murder. He was hardly injured from the beatings he said he had sustained," said the officer. Vikas was reportedly shot twice in his wrist and shoulder. He was rushed to the Army Base Hospital in Delhi Cantonment. He was thereafter shifted to the Safdarjung Hospital in south Delhi, from where he was later discharged. "It appears that Vikas was also injured when one of his friends was trying to hit Somdev with a helmet. The visor of one of the helmets is broken. But we can only be sure of such an injury after examining Vikas's medical report," added the officer. The incident took place at about 10.30 pm. Somdev was carrying his employer, a Delhi-based businessman, in a Skoda car from Sarojini Nagar to Rohini, where he had to attend a function. The four youths were on three motorcycles and were moving ahead of the car. They protested when Somdev almost rammed into them. They stopped their motorcycles in front of the car. An argument ensued between them and Somdev. They allegedly started punching and beating him with their helmets, according to the police. Somdev took out his licensed revolver and fired at the youths, thereby injuring Vikas. The revolver has been seized by the police. |
MLAs politicize issue of homage to freedom fighters
New Delhi, March 25 "It was very disappointing that the matter which required to have been dealt with great seriousness was taken up so lightly by the members. Freedom fighters bought us independence. So, they deserve to be remembered with dedication," Shastri said. As the House started its proceedings in the afternoon, the Speaker called to pay homage to the freedom fighters to mark the death anniversary of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Rajguru
and Sukhdev. Initiating the discussion, the Leader of the Opposition VK Malhotra said that martyrs played an important role in bringing independence to our country. BJP MLA Naresh Gaur then attacked the Congress by accusing it of supporting terrorism. "The Delhi police has arrested a terrorist and averted a big tragedy. But instead of raising their morale, the Congress is running it down. Terrorist outfits are encouraged as a result," said Gaur. Reacting to the speech, Congress MLA Anil Bhardwaj said that the party has created some of the biggest martyrs, indicating that Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev also belonged to the party. "Some of the biggest martyrs were created by the Congress. Our party has always been supportive of them," he said. A heated argument ensued between both the party leaders, forcing the Speaker to intervene.
He expressed disappointment at the members' failure to show their gratitude towards freedom fighters cutting across
the party lines. Speaking on the arrest of accused Liyakat Ali Shah from Gorakhpur on March 22, Asif Mohammad Khan, MLA from Okhla, said that Liyakat is innocent and the weapons seized by the Delhi police were actually planted by it. |
Special chance for DU students to clear backlog
New Delhi, March 25 Many students argued that due to genuine reasons, they could not complete their backlog on time and their career could be adversely hit, if the scheme on special chance is done away with. The fresh notification says that the students must submit their applications by April 5 to enable them to appear in their backlog papers. The students must also have specific recommendations of principals, and heads of their colleges and departments. The Delhi High Court had earlier directed the university to consider the requests of 31 students of various undergraduate courses for permission to avail themselves of a "special chance" to clear their papers in which they had failed to get pass marks. The students had approached the court after the university refused a special chance, citing burden on the examination branch. A strict one-time exemption, the notification clearly states that the applications of only those students will be processed for consideration of the competent authority in whose cases the subjects/papers have the same or similar course titles and substantially, the same course contents. Last year, the university had witnessed a series of protest and received many representations for a rollback of the withdrawal of the special chance. After the DUSU joined in the protests and the Vice-Chancellor met the affected students in his weekly "darbar", the administration agreed that the cases of 25 students would be reviewed if they submit enough proof to explain why they had missed exams. The DU administration, however, later rejected the plea of all the students to sit for examinations of various courses under the "special chance" criterion. They said the cases will be reviewed again if the students submit more documents relating to the reasons behind the delay in sitting for examination. |
Kejriwal’s fast enters third day; volunteers seek support
New Delhi, March 25 Kejriwal's fast appears to be drawing less crowd while his party maintained that the protest against the Delhi government on the issue has been receiving a good support. Kejriwal, whose health is good as told by the party representatives, said crowd at the protest site doesn't matter as more and more people are joining the civil disobedience against the alleged nexus of the Sheila Dikshit government and the private discoms. "People have to stand up for their rights and our volunteers are carrying the message to the people in every corner of the city,” he said. |
