Amritsar-Toronto flight yet to resume
: State residents willing to travel to Canada this summer may have to head to New Delhi to catch a connecting flight as the Air India’s Amritsar-Delhi-Toronto flight continues to remain suspended and there seems no possibility of its resumption in near future. The flight was earlier suspended till March this year due to a strike by pilots of the national carrier.

PTU to introduce new courses:
The Academic Council of Punjab Technical University (PTU) has approved introduction of three new courses - Masters Degree in Journalism and Mass Communication, PG Diploma in Teaching Methodology and MBA in Business Laws. The courses will be run from the Kapurthala-based Punjab Institute of Technology, sources said, adding the University would soon have a Shri Guru Nanak Dev Studies chair. The decisions were taken in a meeting of the council chaired by Dr Rajneesh Arora, Vice Chancellor.

Man jumps in front of train, dies
: Sonu (30) of Narukheri village allegedly committed suicide by jumping in front of a Shatabdi train plying between Amritsar and Delhi this morning. The Railway Police rushed to the spot and sent the victim's body to the local Civil Hospital for a post-mortem examination. It is yet to be ascertained why he took this extreme step.

: Dr Pradeep Chauhan, former president of the Kurukshetra University Teachers Association (KUTA), who has been nominated as President's nominee on the Executive Council of the Central University of Haryana by President Pranab Mukherjee.

3 get 2-year RI in robbery case: Three persons were awarded two-year rigorous imprisonment (RI) and a fine of Rs 3,000 under Sections 392 and 120-B, IPC, here on Monday in a conspiracy and robbery case. Sessions Judge Sushil Kukreja found three persons, Harjit Singh of Singh Sabha Gurdwara village, Sangrur, Chinda of ward No. 3, Sangrur, and Saudagar Khan of Ludhiana guilty.

Woman hurt as cooker explodes: Tara Devi (25) of Kooh village near here was injured seriously when a cooker, in which she was cooking some vegetables, burst on Wednesday. She was rushed to nearby Community Health Centre, Harlog, and from there to the Regional Hospital and then to the IGMC, Shimla. Her condition is said to be serious. Panchayat president Rattan Singh Thakur and village elders have urged the district administration to provide immediate financial help to this poor family.

Foundation day on March 29: The Himachal Pensioners’ Kalyan Sangh will celebrate its 17th foundation day on March 29 at Dehar in Mandi district. President of the sangh BD Sharma said the long-pending demands of pensioners would be discussed on that day. The sangh has also criticised the Income Tax and Life Certificate policy for drawing pension and urged the government to change it.

Woman, kids die of poisoning: Kiran Bala, who along with her two deaf and dumb children, consumed some poisonous tablets at her house at Raggad Rajputan village on Wednesday, died on Thursday. She died at the Tanda hospital and her son Anu at the Regional Hospital in Hamirpur. Her daughter Shreya had died at the Badsar hospital on Wednesday.

Motorcycle stolen from police stn: A police motorcycle belonging to the Bhota police station was stolen on Wednesday night. A policeman had parked this motorcycle on the road near the police station at 8 pm. Later the policemen on duty found the vehicle missing from the spot at 10.30 pm.

Missing person untraceable: Sanjay Goel of Kota, Rajasthan, on Tuesday alleged that his nephew Khishtiz Goel, who went missing from Manikaran on November 9, 2012, was murdered while he was on a trip to the Kullu valley. The SP said the police had lodged an FIR under Section 364, IPC, at the Kullu police station on Sanjay’s complaint. Khishtiz had come from Mumbai.

2 killed in road accident:
Two persons died and two others sustained serious injuries when a Bolero camper met with an accident near Charku Pani in Rampur. The police said the accident occurred when the ill-fated vehicle was on its way from Kuki to Taklech. Geet Ram and Bhai Devi died on the spot while two other persons sustained serious injuries. They have been admitted to the Civil Hospital, Rampur, for treatment.

Bharti is football, tennis assn chief: Chief Parliamentary Secretary Neeraj Bharti has been appointed president of the Himachal unit of the All-India Football-Tennis Association. Ram Avatar, general secretary of the association, announced this during the opening of the National Football Tennis Federation Cup match at Mohali on Saturday. Bharti, who inaugurated the match, said all possible efforts would be made to promote the game in Himachal Pradesh.
