Un (Holi) act: 72 booked for drunk driving
Chandigarh, March 28
Eggs replaced vibrant colours, smoke billowing tractors, horse driven carts and mini-trucks substituted for swanky cars as sporadic cases of hooliganism were reported from different parts of the city. The police booked 72 persons for drunk driving and impounded 84 vehicles.

Three youths killed in road mishap 
Panchkula, March 28
The Holi celebrations turned sour for the families of three youths, who were killed when their motorcycle hit a divider on the Panchkula-Kalka highway near Command Hospital on Wednesday afternoon.

26-year-old youth commits suicide 
Chandigarh, March 28
A 26-year-old youth reportedly committed suicide while his 36-year-old maternal aunt is battling for life in the emergency ward of GMCH-32. The duo attempted suicide by hanging themselves from a ceiling fan at their Sector 46 residence.

Project hits (rat)block
Chandigarh, March 28
The Chandigarh Administration's ambitious project to construct a research centre at Le Corbusier Centre in Sector 19 has hit a roadblock. Reason: Rats in the heritage building. Officials said the rodents could destroy important papers in the centre.

In a special drive, the enforcement wing of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation on Thursday removed encroachments from the markets of Sectors 19 and 22 and challaned 135 violators. The MC team confiscated carts, tables, stools and crates.

Purchase of buses: Rs 45 crore about to lapse

With just three days left for the financial year to end, the UT transport department is yet to exhaust the budget of Rs 45 crore allocated for the purchase of 49 buses. Despite holding meetings in the past few days, the issue has not been sorted out as the process is stuck in technical bids.

The Festival of Sufi Music and Documentary Films opened today with brainstorming discussion on Sufism and its mystical tradition here at Tagore Theatre. The festival began with illustrative lecture by scholars Yousuf Saeed and Madan Gopal Singh on Sufi music and qawwali. They both laid emphasis on the philosophy behind this path of wisdom and how Sufism influenced other performing arts and visual art forms of the world.

From fun, frolic and gaiety to riot of colour 
Chandigarh, March 28
Students celebrates on the PU campus. It was a colder Holi compared to other years, but not enough to deter the spirit of revellers who did not mind jumping into tubs filled with coloured water and smearing each other with colours. It was fun and frolic all the way, as the townsters, young and old alike, were drenched in colours and seen dancing to the tunes of bhangra in various parts of the city.

Panchkula too witnessed a peaceful Holi yesterday as no major untoward incident was reported from the city. Talking to Chandigarh Tribune, Rajbir Deswal, Police Commissioner, said that the festival passed off peacefully.

No untoward incident in Mohali 
Mohali, March 28 
Flouting norms: A policeman stops bikers without helmets in Mohali. Holi passed off peacefully here as no case of eve-teasing and major altercation was reported in the town yesterday. However, the police did not let go traffic offenders, as 148 challans were issued and 48 vehicles impounded. “Most of these offenders were challaned for triple-riding, helmet-less driving, removal of silencers and drunken driving”, said Swarndeep Singh, SP (City).

Going by the phrase, survival of the fittest, Mohali auto operators are using muscle power to run their business in the city. They operate from Sector 22 opposite the local bus stand.

Dental traumatic injuries common among children

In a study conducted on 11,500 children in the city aged between 5 and 17, 9 per cent (1,047) had dental traumatic injuries. Among these, boys showed more traumatic injuries (10.18 per cent) than girls (7.8 per cent).

Panchkula resident killed in firing by French troops in Africa
Panchkula, March 28
For Seema, the wife of Karna Bahadur, the victim, a resident of Sector 4, Panchkula, who has been shot dead in an open fire by the French troops in Central African Republic (CAR), hope springs eternal. She is still awaiting his return. Bahadur, 27, who she thinks has been injured and is being brought back home, has been killed after the troops mistook him to be among the 15 ‘suicide bombers’ approaching the Bangui airport.

Over 250 NIPER students hold protest

Students stage a protest outside the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research in Mohali on Thursday. High drama was witnessed at the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) when around 250 students staged a dharna in front of the entry gate of the institute and started raising slogans against its director today evening.

The Education Department got a “modest” response to its centralised admission process initiated to fill vacant seats under the Right to Education (RTE) Act for the next academic session. The late date for the registration got over today.

Two more government schools in the city will have the “model” status from the next academic session. At present, there are 22 government model senior secondary schools and 18 government model high schools in the city.

The Punjab Government today conferred the Shaheed-I-Azam Bhagat Singh State Youth Awards on eight persons at a function organised at Shivalik Public School here in connection with Youth Day.

Moot court contest

Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Punjab, is organising the second RGNUL National Moot Court Competition from March 29 to 31. As many as thirty six teams from across the country are participating in this competition. The moot proposition is based on Prevention of Corruption Act (Criminal Law). The competition will be inaugurated by Justice AK Sikri, Chief Justice, Punjab and Haryana High Court, Chandigarh and Chancellor, RGNUL, Punjab.

Man booked for rape 
Mohali, March 28 The police has registered a case against a person on the charge of raping his neighbour on Tuesday night. The accused, Gurpreet Singh, a resident of Jhampur near Balongi village, is yet to be arrested.

21-year-old arrested on murder charge 
Mohali, March 28
The police arrested a 21-year-old youth on the charge of murdering his friend by pushing him in front of a vehicle following an altercation at Jhanjheri village on Tuesday night.

Man charged with bid to kill
Chandigarh, March 28
On a complaint of Talwinder Singh and his cousin Vijay, accused Kartar Singh was charged with attempt to murder. The victims alleged that the accused attacked with a knife during a scuffle . The victims received injuries and were admitted to GMCH-32. A case under Section 307 of the IPC has been registered at the Industrial Area police station .

IOCL lift men's c’ship trophy

Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL) and ONGC lifted the men's and women's team championship trophies respectively of All India Public Sector Carom Tournament organised by Food Corporation of India, here in chandigarh. IOCL thrashed Air India in the final 2-1 while ONGC lifted the trophy, on the round robin league basis.

Cricket trials

The Chandigarh Cricket Association (CCA), affiliated to PCA, is going to organise the cricket trails for the age group of U-16 on 31st march at 3.00 pm at Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36 for the upcoming inter-district tournament starting from April 15, all over Punjab.The players born on or after 1st September 1997 are eligible for the trails.The players are advised to come in proper kit, along with their birth certificate.

The cricket team of Mohit Warriors defeated Friends Club, Sector 26, in the ongoing T20 Cricket Tournament for Youth Against Drugs Trophy, being held at LIC cricket ground, here today. While batting first, the winning side posted a total of 139-runs with the healthy contribution from Ankit Kaushal, scoring 98 off 90 studded with 14 boundaries and a six. For the bowling side, Varun and Rozel claimed 2 wickets each.
