Moot court contest

Patiala, March 28
Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Punjab, is organising the second RGNUL National Moot Court Competition from March 29 to 31. As many as thirty six teams from across the country are participating in this competition. The moot proposition is based on Prevention of Corruption Act (Criminal Law). The competition will be inaugurated by Justice AK Sikri, Chief Justice, Punjab and Haryana High Court, Chandigarh and Chancellor, RGNUL, Punjab.

The final round on March 31 will be adjudicated by sitting High Court Judges, Justice Ajay Tewari, Justice Ajay Kumar Mittal and Justice M M S Bedi. The prize money for the winners is Rs 10,000 and Rs 7,000 for runners Up. In order to encourage participants this year, there are prizes for best memorial, best speaker, and best researcher. RGNUL through this competition provides platform to various students, cross the region and country to hone their skill and compete with the best students.

Scribe killed in accident

Fatehgarh sahib, March 28
Chirjeev Singh Dua reporter of Daily Ajit from Mandi Gobindgarh was killed in a road accident last night on GT Road near Gobindgarh.

He was going to his native place, Khanna, after covering a Holi function at Mandi Gobindgarh on his scooter. An Innova car hit his scooter from the rear side and fled the scene.

He was taken to Civil Hospital, Mandi Gobindgarh, where he was declared brought dead.

He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter. His son lives in USA, while his daughter is in Canada. His cremation will took place on March 30 at Khanna.

TB awareness programme

A tuberculosis (TB) awareness programme was held to mark the World TB Day in the campus of truck union, Lalru, here. The theme of the programme was that no TB patient should die.

While addressing the gathering, Dr Daler Singh Multani, SMO, CHC, Lalru, said that with the available facilities and the hard work, the Lalru hospital would be committed to fulfil the theme during the current year.

Dr Multani said TB was a curable disease with free DOT treatment and medicine was available in every government hospital.

Although TB is a disease of poor but now this disease has infiltrated in every strata of people because of prevalence of poor nutrition status, drug addictions, AIDS and diabetes.

Persistence of cough for more than two weeks, rise of fever or blood with sputum may turn out to be TB. So blood test, sputum test or x ray of chest are few of the easiest and common methods to diagnose tuberculosis and can easily be availed in government hospitals.

Farmer electrocuted

Banur, March 28
A farmer was electrocuted near Jhansla village when he was trying to repair the defected electricity wires of a transformer. The deceased had been identified as 35-year-old Raghveer Singh, resident of near by Urdan village. 

The body of the victim was handed over to relatives after conducting postmortem. —OC

Eight injured as truck collides with bus

Ambala, March 28
As many as eight railway employees of Kalka were injured when a truck of the railway workshop in which they were travelling collided with a Haryana Roadways bus on the Ambala-Hisar Highway near Ambala City today.

The injured were admitted to Civil Hospital ,Ambala City. They are Dharm Singh, Bhagu Ram, Dashrath, Raj Kumar Suchha Singh, Raja Ram and Jaggannath. The driver of the truck, Birbal, sustained serious injuries. According to information, the railway employees were going to Kaithal to bring some railway material from there. The police reached on the site and began investigations. — TNS

Thieves decamp with cash, jewellery 

Ambala, March 28
Jewellery and cash worth Rs 4 lakhs were stolen by thieves from a house in Kaith Majri at Ambala City late last night.

Anil Kumar, the owner of the house said that he had gone out of the city along with his family members to attend a religious function of his relatives on March 26. When he came back on March 27, he found that the locks of the house were broken. When he entered the house he found that lockers of the cupboards were also broken. The cash and the jewelry items kept in it were missing. He informed the matter to police. The police have registered a case against unidentified thieves. No clue of the thieves was achieved so far. — TNS

Man booked for rape 

Mohali, March 28
The police has registered a case against a person on the charge of raping his neighbour on Tuesday night. The accused, Gurpreet Singh, a resident of Jhampur near Balongi village, is yet to be arrested.

The police said the victim, who was alone at home, was sleeping when Gurpreet Singh raped her after scaling the wall. The family of the victim had gone to a marriage in the locality. —TNS

21-year-old arrested on murder charge

Mohali, March 28
The police arrested a 21-year-old youth on the charge of murdering his friend by pushing him in front of a vehicle following an altercation at Jhanjheri village on Tuesday night.

The accused has been identified as Amanpreet Singh.

The victim, 21-year-old Harvinder Singh, was a resident of Nangal Faijgarh village.

The police has also booked Amanpreet’s brother, Paramjit Singh, on the same charge.

Giving details, Sarabjit Singh, investigating officer, said the victim’s family lodged a complaint with the police that Amanpreet Singh took Harvinder along with him on his motorbike (PB65K-5803) from the latter’s house at 7 pm.

“Both friends went to a liquor vend at Jhanjheri village where they had an altercation, following which the accused allegedly pushed Harvinder in front of a moving car when they were crossing the road,” said Sarabjit Singh.

He said Amanpreet Singh called up his brother Paramjit Singh and the duo took the injured, Harvinder, to the Phase VI Civil Hospital in their car.

Doctors at the hospital declared Harvinder brought dead.

The police had registered a case of culpable homicide (Section 304 of the India Penal Code), which was later converted into a murder case under Section 302 of the IPC at Kharar police station (Sadar).

Man charged with bid to kill

Chandigarh, March 28
On a complaint of Talwinder Singh and his cousin Vijay, accused Kartar Singh was charged with attempt to murder. The victims alleged that the accused attacked with a knife during a scuffle . The victims received injuries and were admitted to GMCH-32. A case under Section 307 of the IPC has been registered at the Industrial Area police station .

Aditya Hegde, a resident of doctors’ hostel, reported that some one had stolen his laptop and Rs 1,500 cash from his residence on March 26. A case under Section 380 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 11 police station.

Bootlegger held

The police has arrested Amar Nath of Dhanas and recovered six bottles of country made wine from his possession. A case under Excise Act has been registeredat the Sector 11 police station.

Amit Kumar, a resident of Daria village in his complaint to police reported that some one had stolen his auto-rickshaw (PB-65T-3723) from Sector 22, on March 24. A case has been registered.

A local resident alleged that Sunny and Manny, both resident of Sector 23, beat up and threatened the complainant near her residence on March 26. A case has been registered.

Surinder Singh, a resident of Sector 22, reported to police that some one had stolen a gold chain, three nosepins and silver ornaments from his residence on March 26. A case has been registered

Amarjit Singh, a resident of Sector 22, in his complaint to police alleged that some one had stolen his scooter (CH-03W-6852) on March 27.

Jagminder Singh, a resident of Sector 46, reported that some one had stolen his car ( CH-01S-5609) from the parking of Sectors 19 and 27 on March 17. A case under section 379 IPC has been registered.

The police has registered a case against a person under Section 309 of the IPC for attempting suicide by setting himself afire at his residence on March 26. The victim suffered injuries and was admitted to the PGI.

A city resident alleged that Dinesh Mahavar , resident of Kota, Rajasthan, hacked her email-id. A case under Sections 66, 66A, 66D, 67 of the IT Act has been registered.

Vajinder Singh, a resident of Sector 29, alleged that Vijay of Sector 29 was caught stealing his mobile phone and charger from his house on March 27.

Chandigarh, March 28
Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL) and ONGC lifted the men's and women's team championship trophies respectively of All India Public Sector Carom Tournament organised by Food Corporation of India, here in chandigarh. IOCL thrashed Air India in the final 2-1 while ONGC lifted the trophy, on the round robin league basis.

The other matches of the tournament that will conclude tomorrow. The current national champion K Sriniwas (IOCL) and former world champion Yogesh Pradesi (IOCL) entered the quarterfinals in the men's singles event along with Natraj (Air India), Ashok Gaur (ONGC), Hidayat Ansari (IOCL), M A Hakim (BSNL), Ramesh Babu (IOCL), Sandeep Devrukhkar (ONGC). The men's singles and women's singles final will be played tomorrow at 2:00 pm.

Cricket trials

Chandigarh, March 28
The Chandigarh Cricket Association (CCA), affiliated to PCA, is going to organise the cricket trails for the age group of U-16 on 31st march at 3.00 pm at Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36 for the upcoming inter-district tournament starting from April 15, all over Punjab.The players born on or after 1st September 1997 are eligible for the trails.The players are advised to come in proper kit, along with their birth certificate.

MOHALI: The Mohali District Cricket Association (MCA) will conduct trails to select the boys (U-15) cricket team on March 30 and 31, at the C-Ground of the PCA Stadium, here. The trails will be conducted under the supervision of Sukhvinder Singh Tinku, chief coach of MCA from 9 to 11 a.m. The interested players are advised to come in proper kit and should bring their date of birth certificate.

FATEHGARH SAHIB: The Fatehgarh Sahib District Cricket Association, affiliated to Punjab Cricket Association, will conduct trials to select its U-16 team at Mata Gujri College, Fatehgarh Sahib on March 30 at 1 pm, under the chairmanship of former Indian under 19 and Punjab Ranji Trophy player Monish Aggarwal. The team will take part in the Punjab inter-district cricket tournament to be organised by Punjab Cricket Association. All the players either studying or living in Fatehgarh Sahib are eligible for trials. The players must be less then 16 years as on 1-9-2013, i.e. must be born on or after 01-9-1997. Interested players must bring photocopy of the birth certificate or a certificate from the respective institute to confirm the date of birth.

Chandigarh, March 28
The Democratic Youth Federation of India and Guru Gobind Singh Sports Club, Dadu Majra, in collaboration with Nehru Yuva Kendra organised a one-day football tournament on the occasion of Holi.

As many as eight teams participated in this tournament. The Dadu Majra Eleven went down against and Young Football Club, Dadu Majra Colony, in the final match. The winning side registered a 2-0 win over the rivals. The winners and the runners-up were awarded with cash prizes.

The cricket team of Mohit Warriors defeated Friends Club, Sector 26, in the ongoing T20 Cricket Tournament for Youth Against Drugs Trophy, being held at LIC cricket ground, here today. While batting first, the winning side posted a total of 139-runs with the healthy contribution from Ankit Kaushal, scoring 98 off 90 studded with 14 boundaries and a six. For the bowling side, Varun and Rozel claimed 2 wickets each.

In reply, the team of friends club bundled out for mere 91-runs. For them, Ramesh was the hieghest scorer with his 19 runs contribution, while Ajay added 17 runs. For the bowling side, Rahul claimed 4 for 11.

Chandigarh, March 28
The 26th Junior Boys and Girls & 27th Sub-Junior Boys and Girls Handball Championship began today at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19 (GMSSS-19) and will continue till March 31. 

In the inaugural match of sub-junior boys category, the Coaching Centre GMSSS-19 beat Handball Coaching Centre, Sector 42 by 15-13. The top scorers from the winning side were Amardeep and Mitul as they scored five goals each. In the 2nd match, GNKSSS- 30 beat GHS Sector- 28 by 21-6. The top scorers from the winners were Sunny with 7 goals, and Gaurav with 5.
