Man thrown from rooftop; dies

Ludhiana, March 28
One murder and five rape cases were reported on Holi yesterday. More than 100 medico legal reports (MLRs) of persons suffering injuries during a clash were registered at the Civil Hospital.

City erupts in joy, Holi celebrated with fervour
Ludhiana, March 28
There was colour, joy and fun all around as the festival of colours was celebrated in the city yesterday. In some places, it was the subtle "teeka" and "gulal" while at others buckets of coloured water, DJ and dance parties dominated the celebrations.

Trailer plunges into gorge; six villagers killed
Mandi Ahmedgarh, March 28
The Holi celebrations turned sour for the residents of Nangal Khurad village, near Pakhowal, after the news of death of at least six persons, including five members of a family, in an accident reached them.

Team visits flood-prone areas
Ludhiana, March 28
Neeru Katyal, Additional Deputy Commissioner (G), along with officials from the Drainage Department, today visited flood-prone areas in the district. The areas included Dhulewal, Mattewara, Kasabad, Seed Farm II, Khera Bet and Madhepur.

5 of ‘zeharkhurani’ gang held
Ludhiana, March 28
Five members of the notorious "zeharkhurani" gang were nabbed by the GRP from railway station here today. The accused, who have been identified as Sandeep Kumar, Ajit Kumar, Munish Kumar, Akbar Khan and Manoj Kumar, natives of Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Bihar, were nabbed from platform no. 5 while they were planning a strike on a long-distance train.

Former Youth Cong leader's wife retracts statement
Ludhiana, March 28
Former president of the District Youth Congress (Urban) Dimple Rana's wife has retracted her statement and claimed that her husband had suffered a bullet injury when he slipped on stairs and a pistol went off accidentally. His wife, Seema Rana, had earlier stated that her husband had shot himself in the abdomen following a heated argument with her in-laws.

Madepura becomes sand mining hot spot; villagers protest
Jagraon, March 28
Despite a ban on sand mining, illegal mining on the Sutlej bed has been going on unchecked at Madepura village, near Sidhwan Bet. The state government has sanctioned only one site for the mining of sand worth Rs 18.20 crore on the Sutlej bed near Parjian Biharipur village, near Sidhwan Bet, under a contract signed following an auction of the site held two months ago.

education dept’s rationalisation move
Over 40 govt schools merged
Ludhiana, March 28
Over 40 government schools in Ludhiana have been merged by the education department, under the recent rationalisation policy. While the department claims that under the rationalisation move, there will be equal distribution of schools, teachers, students in every block and focus would be given on providing quality education, the teachers maintain that if the schools were merged like this, posts will be surplus and these will ultimately be abolished.

Tributes paid to six policemen
Khamano March 28
Rich tributes were paid to six police personnel of Khamano at Gurudwara Sahib Ranwan near Khamano who lost their lives during a road accident some days ago on the Sanghol-Bassi Pathana road. Bhog of Shri Akhand Path Sahib was organised by the police department with the help of area residents.

150 safai karamcharis given appointment letters
Ludhiana, March 28
Mayor Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria today handed-over appointment letters to as many as 150 safai-karamcharis, who have been regularised by the government. The Municipal Karamchari Dal welcomed the move taken by the government and has urged the state government to regularise the remaining, too.

Cool spring morning, coupled with cloudy overcast sky, winds and light drizzle made the day pleasant today. The minimum temperature took a dip today. It was 23 degree Celsius with a marginal rise in minimum temperature at 17 degree Celsius.

Mazdoor union stages dharna
Ludhiana, March 28
The Lal Jhanda Mazdoor Union staged a dharna at Dana Mandi, Sahnewal, to express their resentment against the state government over the delay in the auction of sand mines.

A large number of Namdhari sect followers blocked traffic on Ludhian-Chandigarh road near Katani village after a relative of the sect head was challaned by a traffic official.

Excise staff strike today
Ludhiana, March 28
Inspectors and superintendents of the Central Excise will observe a countrywide three-day strike from March 29 to 31 against the apathetic attitude of the authorities concerned towards their promotions, pay matters and working conditions.

New scan centres approved
A meeting of District PNDT Advisory Committee, Ludhiana, was held here on Thursday under the chairperson Dr Kumkum Awasthi at Civil Surgeon’s office. Addressing the meeting, the District Appropriate Authority-cum-Civil Surgeon, Ludhiana Dr Subhash Batta, said there were 233 scan centres in the district.

Three commit suicide in city
Ludhiana, March 28
Three suicide incidents were reported from different parts of the city. The first incident was reported from Doraha, where man committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan. The deceased has been identified as Lalit Kumar (42), a resident of Dashmesh Nagar. Financial crises were suspected to be the reason behind the extreme step.

3 die in separate road mishaps
Ludhiana, March 28
As many as three persons lost their lives in separate road accidents in the city in past 24 hours. All the three accidents took place at the Focal Point area. One victim was run over by an unidentified vehicle in Dehlon. Another similar incident occurred at Focal Point area.

Man booked for creating ruckus at hospital
Ludhiana, March 28
A resident of Lohara village was booked for creating ruckus in the civil hospital. The accused identified as Jagdeep Singh Dhillon had visited the civil hospital yesterday for getting the medico legal report (MLR).

2 snatchers held
Ludhiana, March 28
The city police has arrested two persons who were involved in snatching and lifting of vehicles. The accused have been identified as Makhan Singh and Ranjit Singh, both residents of Islam Gunj area. They were nabbed following a tip- off from Kashmir Nagar Chowk in Division No 3 area here last evening.

Woman held for stealing
Ludhiana, March 28
A woman thief landed in police net for allegedly stealing the purse of a devotee, who had visited a gurdwara in Sarabha Nagar, here yesterday. The accused has been identified as Kamaljit Kaur, a resident of Vishkarma Colony.
