12 injured in cylinder blast, three serious
New Delhi, November 29 The neighbours with the help of other residents of the area had almost controlled the fire when the fire tenders reached the spot. The injured, including four women, were rushed to Lal Bahadur Hospital from where they were shifted to Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital, said a fire officer. The incident was reported around 9.05 am from E-Block in New Ashok Nagar. All the 12 victims are neighbours and live in rented accommodation. "Three of the victims, identified as Hariram (46), his wife Ramrati (36) and their neighbour Shobha (36), are reportedly suffering 65 to 85 per cent burns and their condition is believed to be critical, said a police officer. The other injured have been identified as Alamgir (35), Surender (32), Pramod (30), Brij Kishan (30), Laxmi (16), Sweta (14), Santosh (13), Saurabh (26) and Ram Rishi (26). "It seems that the leakage in the cylinder caused explosion," said the officer. |
‘Jan Sansad’ debates Land Acquisition Bill
New Delhi, November 29 The draft of the bill was referred to a Group of Ministers (GoM) chaired by Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar last month and finally "the report with substantial changes will be made public in a day or two. Some differences with the civil societies remain, but some of their suggestions have been accepted," said Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh during a meeting with an eight-member delegation today. At the Jan Sansad, people called upon the government not to disregard the concerns surrounding the forcible displacement of villagers in order to favour the prospects of corporate honchos. The new bill, lined up for discussion in the winter session of Parliament, should not be passed without the major stakeholders-the farmers and labourers employed in the fields-being taken into confidence was the unanimous demand that echoed from the People's Parliament. Hailing the efforts of Aruna Roy and Nikhil Roy for National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, Narmada Bachao Andolan leader Medha Patkar said despite the struggle, the government is grabbing the lands of people in the name of development. On the one hand, it is promising jobs to them, on the other it is snatching away their source of income. It was not only the members of civil society groups who expressed their disapproval for forcible land acquisitions, even members from the political spectrum, such as senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Mani Shakar Aiyar espoused the cause of farmers. Urging the gathering to put pressure on the government, Aiyar viewed, "The bill was prepared in haste and the report of the Standing Committee has ignored the issue of the livelihood of people concerned." |
Girl strangled by boyfriend
New Delhi, November 29 She worked as a beautician and was living with her parents in Om Vihar Colony of Uttam Nagar, said a senior police official. Her body was found in a Maruti 800 car, which belonged to her boyfriend Omdutt (24), near Pillar number-700 at midnight yesterday. The police has arrested the accused Omdutt and a case of murder has been registered against him. During investigation, he confessed to strangulating her. Omdutt, who was already married, had been having an affair with the victim for the last four years, the police said. He worked as hardware salesman and was living in the same area. "Omdutt was having an illicit affair with Reena who was compelling him to marry her. “They had several fights over the issue in the past," said the police. Omdutt claimed that she was threatening to disclose their affair to his family members. "Last night at around 12, they were going in Omdutt's car. They started having heated arguments over the marriage issue and then Omdutt strangulated her. “After the crime, he fled to his relative's place. Reena's body was later discovered by a passerby," said the police official. The body has been sent to Deen Dayal Upadhayay Hospital for postmortem. |
DU panel rejects 25 ‘special’ cases
New Delhi, November 29 However, the Vice-Chancellor (VC) later in the evening told the students that the cases were rejected in their present form as the documents were incomplete. They would be reconsidered later. "Students will be invited to submit fresh documents and each case will be analysed again. If the student qualifies, they will be allowed to sit for the exam next year," said Pro-Vice-Chancellor Vivek Suneja. The affected students participated in a protest at the site of the striking Delhi University's Teacher's Association outside the Vice-Chancellor's office. The public meeting by the VC and his team at Gandhi Bhawan today addressed issues not just of students but also of teachers and karamcharis. "There has been a tremendous pressure on the exam branch which handles answer scripts of over 5 lakh students every semester. Our decisions aren't arbitrary and have been taken only after due consideration. We are responsible for the timely declaration of the results of current students and any extra burden (like the special chance cases) cannot be at the cost of the future of those currently enrolled. Rest assured, the cases will be looked into and speedy remedies worked out," Dinesh Singh said while answering a query on special chances by DUSU president Arun Hooda. However, the agitating teachers seemed doubtful of the assurances given in the public meeting. "In the standing committee today, the administration did not show any intention of inviting fresh documents," said Amitav Charavorty, AC member. |
‘Women in garment industry suffer
sexual abuse’
New Delhi, November 29 The most vulnerable are the uneducated population who migrate to cities to earn a living, they added. In India, there are 35 million garment workers and 60 per cent of them are women who, experts said, experience some form of harassment or abuse. Emphasising the need to address workplace harassment, Silawal Giri of UN Women, remarked, "Violence against women is a violation of rights which is non-negotiable and inherent in every human being. Many women workers, especially migrant workers, do not have information or access to support. Women should have access to the information about the government policies meant for them." Talking about the larger issue of gender-based violence, Madhubala Nath of Global Health Strategy, said, "Violence against women is so deeply embedded in our society that by only creating sexual harassment committees, we will not be able to address the problem. A kind of 'unlearning' of attitudes needs to happen. We need to stigmatise violence against women. Right now, we stigmatise the effects of that violence, but not the cause." "Many Indian factories are part of international supply chains. Unrealistic demands for production cause stress at a factory, leading to inappropriate behaviour," said Stefanie Santila Karl of Fair Wear Foundation. Giving her opinion, Madhu Kishwar, a feminist and writer, said, "There are several legislations already existing to safeguard the rights of women. However, women working in difficult circumstances need to know the law so that they get benefit from it. Also, society at large has the responsibility to protect those who fall victim to violence." |

Left parties support DUTA’s cause
New Delhi, November 29 "Delhi University is a Central Government university. There should be an immediate halt to the coercive steps such as pay cuts. The situation in Delhi University is a cause for concern. The Vice-Chancellor and the university authorities have introduced a series of measures without proper discussion and consultations with the teaching and academic community. The decision taken by the university can adversely affect thousands of students in the colleges affiliated to the university," read the statement. |
12-yr-old boy undergoes combined liver-kidney transplant
New Delhi, November 29 It took 16 hours for a multi-organ transplant team of the hospital, led by Prof Subash Gupta and Prof Sandeep Guleria, to conduct the challenging surgery where a kidney of one sister and a part of the liver of the other sister were transplanted to save their younger brother. Doctors said, the boy, whom they claimed to be the country's youngest to undergo such a procedure, was admitted to the hospital on November 6 and operated upon following a week's observation. Prof Guleria, senior kidney transplant surgeon of Apollo Hospital, said: "The treatment of choice for primary hyperoxaluria in case of kidney failure is a combined liver and kidney transplant and is one of the most challenging transplants in medical science as it requires extensive dialysis pre-operatively and then post-operatively." "He was brought to us with hyperoxaluria in which there is no liver failure yet unless the liver is replaced to provide the deficient enzyme, the kidney transplant will fail as the kidney will get damaged by the oxalate," said paediatric gastroenterologist and group medical director Prof Anupam Sibal. As of date, the Apollo transplant programme has now completed 1,150 liver transplants, added Dr Sibal. |
