Ensuring scientific disposal of e-waste
Students, teachers of city-based Eklavya School take initiative in the direction

Jalandhar, October 16
In what could go a long way to ensure a clean and toxic-free environment, students of a city school have taken a unique initiative of not only creating awareness among people about hazarads of e-waste, but also ensuring proper and scientific disposal of e-waste, like used and discarded computers, mobile phones and chargers.

In what was claimed to be the first such initiative in Punjab and for that matter in North India, except for New Delhi and Rajasthan, management, teachers and students of city-based Eklavya School have come out with a "school enterprise challenge". Teachers along with students of Class IX and X have resolved to create awareness among people about the harmful effects of e-waste under the aegis of the Eklavya Enterprise and to help them dispose it of in a proper way.

"We are here to create awareness about the harmful effects of e-waste, like used and discarded mobile phones, computer CPUs and monitors, batteries and chargers, CDs, speakers, keyboards, mouses, which are nothing short of a hazard for the health of environment. We are providing all possible solutions to a growing environmental problem. The motto of the Eklavya Enterprise is to benefit community as well as the environment,” said Seema Handa, Director of the school.

“People don’t know how to dispose these electronic gadgets and goods and there was no opportunity to do so in a proper manner as there are no registered recyclers, except in New Delhi and Rajasthan. They just throw these away or sell these to junk dealers. Even junk dealers says no to take old CRT monitors due to their weight. In fact, the electronic waste is laden with some harmful chemicals and toxins like mercury, metals, which could seep into the soil and pollute the underground water and environment. The problem is acquiring bigger dimensions as thousands of people are using and discarding used gadgets at their own will these days,” said Seema Handa.

She said at present, Jalandhar or even Punjab, did not have any government registered toxic e-waste recyclers. The Eklavya Enterprise will collect toxic e-waste from different organisations of Jalandhar and store, segregate, package and ship it to a government-registered toxic e-waste management company for proper disposal.

“We have selected 15 students, two teachers, apart from me for this project. People have to pay a nominal fee starting at Rs 2 for a charger and Rs 10 for a used and discarded mobile phone for proper disposal of their e-waste,” said Seema Handa, adding that students have also launched a poster campaign to inform people about the perils of e-waste.

Teachers and students of the school have already started visiting various organisations in Jalandhar and were encouraging people to be a part of the social cause. “The enterprise is getting good response from those organisations for the initiative. NOKIA has also appreciated the campaign run by the Eklavya Enterprise and has decided to collaborate with it for the recycling of all the e-waste collected by it. The Eklavya Enterprise seek valuable contribution of people of Jalandhar towards this initiative to save our mother earth for our future generations,” said Dimple Sharma, Principal of the school.
