4 dengue cases reported in Nawanshahr

Nawanshahr, October 12
After grappling with jaundice outbreak a few months back, the town has been reportedly stung by dengue.

Gagan Sharma of local Friends Colony reportedly died of dengue at the DMC, Ludhiana, two days back and another youth Yuvraj of local Ibrahim Basti has been reportedly suffering from dengue fever and is under treatment at a Ludhiana hospital.

"As we wait for a confirmation report regarding the youth suffering from dengue and getting treatment in Ludhiana, two more suspected cases of dengue have come to the fore," said Civil Surgeon Dr Ashwani Kumar Sondhi. Both the patients have been responding well to the treatment, he added.

The Health Department has taken blood samples of residents of different localities in the town to get the first-hand information regarding spread of dengue.

Sanitation drive brings no change

Even though Deputy Commissioner Tanu M Kashayap had launched a sanitation drive, nothing much has changed on the ground. Heaps of garbage, choked drains, complaints regarding leakage from sewerage, water supply pipes and supply of contaminated drinking water are common in the town.

Dr Kamaljit, a former councilor, accused the administration of apathy and said a number of residents of Ibrahim Basti have been suffering from gastroenteritis due to contaminated supply of piped water. Neither the district administration nor any official from the health department and municipal council has taken note of the disease.

He himself suffered from the gastroenteritis and brought the problem of supply of contaminated drinking water into the notice of the Municipal Council, but to no avail, he added.
