Govt to give subsidy on 3 more cylinders
New Delhi, September 17 "All the beneficiaries of the 'Kerosene Free Dilli' scheme will get nine subsidised cylinders instead of six. It is a significant step towards providing relief to the poor families by mitigating the effects of inflation as far as cooking gas is concerned," the Chief Minister said. She said that the government would spare an amount of Rs 42 crore per annum to meet the additional cost. Under the scheme, each of over 3.5 lakh BPL and poor families will get a free LPG cylinder, gas stove and accessories like regulator and pipe which will cost the government a Rs 3,049. The Centre last week had decided that each household will get six cylinders of 14.2-kg per annum at the subsidised rate of Rs 399. While talking to the media after the meeting, the Chief Minister stated that her government is committed to safeguarding the interests of Aam Aadmi. The cabinet has also decided to augment the low-floor CNG bus fleet by procuring 625 fully built non-AC buses. The government is keen to augment its city stage carriage fleet up to
11,000 buses wherein DTC and the corporate entities will operate the bus in 17 distinct clusters in equal ratio. |
Woman held with heroin worth Rs 2.5 cr
New Delhi, September 17 The accused Fehmida was apprehended from the ISBT-Seelampur flyover yesterday evening on a tip-off, said Sanjay Kumar Jain, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime). "She was subjected to intensive interrogation in which she disclosed that she never went to school due to poor financial conditions of the family. When she was 10 years old, her father succumbed to cancer. Fehmida and her mother started selling vegetables in the Seelampur area," said Jain. The police said that she had been arrested earlier also for drug peddling. She was declared a bad character by the local police. "At the age of 15 years, she was married to one Salim who later died because of an excessive intake of alcohol. Akram, Fehmida's brother, was a drug addict who used to procure smack from one Laloo Pehalwan. She too started selling the drug," Jain claimed. Yesterday, she was going to her house to sell a consignment of heroin to her customers which she had procured from Pehalwan's wife Rehana. |
LG urged to regularise 1,639 colonies
New Delhi, September 17 The delegation included all the three Mayors, standing chairmen and Leader of the House. They handed over a letter of memorandum to the LG asking him to exempt colonies developed over public land from the additional charges for regularisation like cost of land and penalty according to the circle rate. They said the boundaries of these colonies be properly decided with proper marking of landmarks along with the abolition
of no-objection certificate from the Delhi fire services. "The formalities detailed in the Master Plan should be accordingly amended so that land use can practicably be changed. Most importantly, the land for civic services like parks, dispensaries, schools, community halls, etc., should be properly earmarked," said Mayor of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation, Savita Gupta. "The drainage system of the colonies should also be thoroughly planned up to the outfall in consultation with the municipal officials. “The development works in these colonies should be initiated in coordination with the local bodies concerned as these colonies would ultimately be transferred to the corporations," she added. |
JNU takes action against beef fest on campus
New Delhi, September 17 The notice specifies that if any student is found in violation to the orders, it will be a punishable offence that may lead to a prison term extendable up to five years and a fine up to Rs 10,000. The notice has already been put up across the university campus and puts the festival on hold which was to be held on the anniversary of Shaheed Bhagat Singh on September 28. The circular dated September 16 issued by the university Registrar says that the administration has been asked by the Vasant Vihar ACP to disseminate this information on campus. The Delhi Agricultural Cattle Preservation Act, 1994, says that no person shall slaughter or cause to be slaughtered or offer or cause to be offered for slaughter any agricultural cattle. "Cattle" in the Act refers to cows of all ages, bulls and bullocks, the 2(A) clause of the Act specifies. On the other hand, today, many religious, social and cultural organisations, including the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Bajrang Dal, Physical Welfare Association, Akhil Bhartiya Gaumans Nishedh Samitee, Akhand Hindusthan Morcha and the Hindu Maha Sabha held demonstration outside the university, demanding immediate action against the organisers of the festival. The protestors carrying saffron flags and placards raised slogans against JNU administration for over two hours, during which time the gates to the main campus remained shut. Calling themselves "gau bhakts" (cow worshippers), the protestors burnt an effigy of the JNU Vice-Chancellor (VC). A memorandum of demands has been submitted to the VC. Speaking to the Tribune, VHP spokesperson Vinod Bansal said, "We have heard of this university circular. However, we think that a lot more needs to be done. The administration needs to hold the students and professors advocating such programmes accountable and take strict action against them." The festival was initially proposed by the New Materialists Group on Campus, after they called for inclusion of beef and pork in the JNU canteens a couple of months ago. The group had questioned that if chicken and mutton could be served in the campus, why not beef and pork? Adding that thousands of students from Northeast and South India were on campus who eat pork and beef. Several professors from JNU and even DU had extended their support to the idea and even attended meetings with the group. However, the festival has not only been facing opposition from outside campus, but inside the campus also. The ABVP has been repeatedly warning of "dangerous consequences", if this festival was encouraged by anyone. Last week, state representatives of the BJP, along with VHP leaders, had met the university officials. |

DU student union takes charge amidst ABVP protest
New Delhi, September 17 The ABVP, on the other hand, went ahead with its plan of action asking students not to attend classes. Even though many disruptions were reported, classes largely continued throughout the university. The ABVP has also submitted a memorandum to the Vice-Chancellor's office today mentioning that no concrete steps were taken to ensure the appointment of a "unbiased and fair" election commission. Furthermore, no transparency was practised during the counting process which is a clear violation of the Lyngdoh guidelines, the memorandum states. |
