The National Student Union of India (NSUI) made a thunderous comeback to Delhi University after a gap of two years, winning three of the four posts of the students’union. However, the annoucement of the results today was overshadowed by a high drama as NSUI’s archrival ABVP cried foul and alleged that the results were rigged.

NSUI candidates were elected for the top three posts

-- president, vice-president and secretary-- while there is a tie between the NSUI and ABVP candidates Raveena Choudhary and Vishu Basoya, respectively, for the post of joint secretary.

With the announcement of the results, the NSUI camp broke into celebrations amid dhol beats. Slogans like "Aayi Aayi... NSUI" reverberated on the campus as party workers distributed sweets.

Listing his priorities, newly elected DUSU president Arun Hooda said that he would take up the long-standing issues of the student community.

"The results have led to a total wipeout of the saffron forces from the university," said NSUI spokesperson Amrish Ranjan Pandey.

However, the mood on the campus completely flipped just minutes after the NSUI candidates started their victory procession as angry and discontent with the results, a group of 150 to 200 ABVP supporters gheraoed the election office, demanding a recount of the votes for joint secretary.

The ABVP supporters soon started raising slogans against the Congress government, accusing it of wresting control of DUSU by abusing power.

When the police tried to contain them, the activists broke through the barricades and climbed the gates of the election office. Sensing that the situation was getting out of control, the police tried to disperse the mob by lathicharge. This left many injured, including two of the party candidates-- Ankit and Vishu Basoya--, who had to be taken to hospital.

"At least 10 of our boys are injured. Some even have fractures. Two of them have head injuries," said Rohit Chahal, ABVP state secretary, who said the students were admitted to Bara Hindu Rao Hospital.

It has been alleged that the police chased the activists through the Arts Faculty lawns into the Central Library and in the confusion, harassed some students who had nothing to do with the protest.

"We were just studying in the library minding our own business. How can the police beat everyone in the sight? We are still in shock," said Rouf, an English literature student.

Sonia, Rahul greet winners

After completing their victory procession, the winners went to 10 Janpath were Congress president Sonia Gandhi and AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi congratulated them.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit also greeted the winners, saying that the victory reiterates people's belief and faith in the Congress.

JNUSU: Trends indicate change in leadership
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, September 15
Just within six months since Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) last went to poll in March, the political loyalties of the students seem to have shifted considerably. In the ongoing counting for the JNU Students' Union (JNUSU) 2012-13 polls, trends indicate a mix response.

Apart from the main panel, students also vote for councillors in their respective schools. Out of the total 29 councils in JNU, All-India Students' Association (AISA) had bagged 16 last time. Today by 10 pm, counting was left only for the School of Languages which has a total of five councillors. Out of the rest of the 24 councillors, the AISA has managed just six so far. Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) grabbed six, while Students' Federation of India (SFI)-JNU has managed four councillors.

"There is a high possibility that the AISA may not be able to manage a clean sweep in the main JNUSU panel like the last two elections. But, even if it wins all the four posts, it will be by a very slim margin. The SFI-JNU's performance in these polls has improved tremendously since the last time. Even we have been able to win more counillors than the last elections. So clearly, JNU students are hinting towards a change from the AISA leadership," said a senior ABVP member of the JNU unit.

Interestingly, SFI-JNU's presidential candidate V. Lenin Kumar was leading AISA's Om Prasad by over 200 votes by the time of filling this report. However, a spokesperson for the AISA said that it was too soon to jump to conclusions since the School of Languages had the maximum number of votes and is known for its strong AISA support base.

"The SFI-JNU's performance has definitely improved since the last elections. However, the complete picture will be clear only by tomorrow morning when the final results are announced. We are still hopeful," said a senior AISA leader.

"This is the first time in JNU that the National Student Union of India (NSUI) has won four councillors. Out of these four, three are from the School of Life Sciences. All three councillors are ours and hence we get to appoint a convener for the centre as well. This is the first time, that the NSUI will get a convener in JNU," said Shahnawaz khan, national secretary of the NSUI who was also an elected councillor in the 2007 elections.

The ABVP claimed two councillors while they backed an independent candidate in centre for computer sciences. The Youth for Equality failed miserably to make a comeback, unable to grasp even a single seat in the councillor elections.

Fuel hike, FDI in retail: BJP out on the streets
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, September 15
A large number of BJP activists today demonstrated against the hike in diesel price and the decision to allow foreign direct investment (FDI) in retail trade. They burnt effigy of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The activists started a march from Jantar Mantar to the PM's residence, breaching all barriers set up by the police. This led to their clash with the cops and subsequent detention. However, they were released later.

The protesters were carrying placards with slogans like 'Rasoi gas, diesel ke bade daam wapas lo', 'Sonia ne kiya kamaal-- mehngi ho gayi roti daal'. 'FDI faisla wapas lo', 'Mehangai ne aisa mara-- mehngi ho gayi tel ki dhara', 'Sheila-Manmohan hai-hai'.

Addressing the demonstrators, senior BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu said, "All oil and gas companies are earning profits of thousands of crores of rupees, yet the prices of cooking gas and diesel have been hiked. This will bring about a general price rise of about 25 per cent. The UPA government at the Centre must go now."

Attacking the government decision to allow FDI in multi-brand retail, Naidu said it would ruin trade in India.

"Trade in this country will come under the control of multi-national companies. This will also affect the farmers of the country," he said.

Delhi unit chief of the BJP Vijender Gupta said that the people are upset with inflation and corruption in the government.

"In spite of this, the Congress government is committing atrocities on the common man. Oil and gas companies are earning huge profits. The price of crude oil and gas is stable in the world market," he said.
