DU candidates resort to plays, funny slogans
New Delhi, September 12 To garner attention, candidates approached students with varied means. On North campus today, street plays at the arts faculty, D school lawns and Nirulas were performed throughout the day. South campus and off-campus colleges witnessed the last wave of posters with funny slogans and 'shayaris', urging the voters to support the candidates. Speaking on the campaigning tactics, NSUI-backed presidential candidate Arun Hooda said, "Such tricks help garner attention of even those students who aren't interested in politics. Some of my friends and supporters have put together a play that calls for a change in the university. When I met the students today, they remembered me because of the play. I am happy with the campaigning during the last six days." Shristi, a first year BA programme student on North campus, is one of those in charge of making the handmade posters for the ABVP candidates. "There is a lot of freedom to experiment with the colours, graphics and slogans to make the posters catchy. Throughout the campaigning, we tried that the supporters showcased unconventional placards. We also placed a bunny of sorts on South campus yesterday. The student posing as bunny caught the attention of even passers-by," She said. "We have to make our presence felt in more than 70 colleges. It is a tough job to accomplish that in four to five days. The last day of campaigning is very important as the last impression on the voters stays with them on the day of polling. And with the help of vibrant means like street plays and slogans, voters recognize the candidates much better," said Rohit Chahal, ABVP. Sharad Chauhan, a supporter of the general secretary candidate of the AISA, said, "Only four students can enter colleges at a time of campaigning. So what we did today was that we gave rhythmical shouts for voting during elections. We marched along the college canteens and playgrounds with loud claps and rhyming slogans. And the candidate later introduced himself to the students and spoke to them." |

New Delhi, September 12 Addressing a meeting of Haryana origin students studying in DU, asking for their support in favour of NSUI candidates, Hooda said that in the last DUSU elections, Haryana students had ensured the win of the presidential candidate and this time as well, they would play a major role for the victory of all four NSUI candidates. He recalled that his grandfather and noted freedom fighter Chaudhary Ranbir Singh studied in Ramjas College , his father and Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda studied in the Law Faculty and he himself studied in Delhi College of Engineering. Bollywood actor and Congress MP Raj Babbar, AICC general secretary Oscar Fernandes and Delhi MP Mahabal Mishra were also present in the meeting. |
Bar outsiders’ entry into campus: BJP
New Delhi, September 12 The Congress is trying to get the DUSU rigged with the help of youths of Haryana. A large number of vehicles of Haryana numbers are already seen on the campuses of university and various colleges. They are allegedly threatening the students to cast their franchise in favour of the NSUI candidates, said Gupta. Gupta demanded from the Police Commissioner that a large number of youths from Haryana have been called in Delhi to influence the DUSU elections. These persons may pose danger to the peaceful polling. Hence, students with valid identity cards should be allowed to enter the college or university premises. The borders of all the colleges and the university should be sealed tomorrow. |
Courts for sexual assault cases: NSUI thanks CM
New Delhi, September 12 The students expressed confidence that the courts would convict those guilty of sexual assaults at the earliest. "The city government is sensitive towards the expectations of the women. It has taken several important decisions for women welfare,' said the students. Interacting with the students, Dikshit said, "Delhi is the first city in the country where a women technical university, named after the greatest woman of the country Indira Gandhi, is being commissioned." |
Issues can be solved with dialogue: Dalai Lama
New Delhi, September 12 Delivering a talk on "Non Violence and Ethical Values" at Jamia Millia Islamia today, the Nobel Peace Laureate said, "The 20th century was one of 'bloodshed' and 'violence'. All countries should strive towards making the 21st century, one that stresses on dialogue to resolve any problems. Violence is not acceptable to resolve an issue." Answering a query of one of the students on the violence against Muslims in Myanmar, the spiritual leader said that his efforts to contact pro-democracy icon Aung Sang Suu Kyi had failed. ''We wrote a letter to Suu Kyi regarding the violence but we got no reply. My representative in Delhi even met the Burmese Ambassador here but it has been four weeks and we have not heard from them,'' he added. "There is a lack of proper channel of communication so much so that I am a spiritual leader and I have never been allowed in that Buddhist-majority country (Myanmar). I receive more support from Christian and even some of the Muslim countries," he said jokingly. Answering another query on Tibet, he explained that the Dalai Lamas have always been the political and spiritual head of the Tibetan people. However, he expressed satisfaction at handing over ''legitimate authority" to elected leaders of the community in-exile. Till last year he had held the dual position of political and spiritual head of the Tibetans before he transferred all powers to the "Prime Minister of the Tibetan Government-in-Exile". The Dalai Lama said that his successor would don the role of only a religious leader for Tibetans and not a political one. "I am now in a semi-retirement position. Every community is mature enough to choose their own leaders. I changed a tradition which has been there for four centuries. What was started by the fourth Dalai Lama has been ended by the 14th Dalai Lama i.e. me. I am happy and proud," he said. |
Man held for Rohini woman murder
New Delhi, September 12 The accused Sandeep (30) has been arrested from the area of Bawana near Rohini in Outer Delhi. A countrymade pistol and the motorcycle used in the commission of crime have been recovered, said a senior police official. Sandeep is Parminder's first wife Ritu's brother. He has confessed to have committed the crime. He hails from Sonipat district of Haryana. "Sandeep is the brother of Ritu, Parminder's first wife. He has confessed to have killed Meenakshi to take revenge, as according to him, Parminder and Meenakshi spoiled Ritu's life," said Mohammad Akhtar Rizvi, Additional (Outer). Sandeep took refuge at public places in Delhi and Sonipat after gunning down Meenakshi. He was, however, held from the Bawana area of Outer Delhi when he came to meet one of his relatives during the wee hours of Wednesday. He told the police that he tried to patch up the matter, but Parminder said that he was not going to leave Meenakshi. During interrogation, Sandeep told the police that Ritu married Parminder in 2004. However, the relations between them got strained in 2006. "Parminder then started avoiding Ritu and began to live with Meenakshi. Sandeep and his family members tried to sort out the matter with Parminder, but in vain," Rizvi added. Ritu filed several cases against Parminder over harassment for dowry, domestic violence and maintenance at the courts in Rohini and Sonipat. A case of murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code has been lodged against Sandeep at K N Katju Marg police station. |
Friend held for gay hairstylist’s murder
New Delhi, September 12 Bimal Gurang (28), reportedly a gay, was found dead at his residence in Vasant Vihar on September 6. The police has claimed to have arrested two of the three accused-- Nand Kishor (24) and Dilip Sharma (27) -- from RK Puram Sector 12. The third accused Pradeep Kumar (24) is already in police custody in Fatehpur Beri in a case of vehicle theft. Gurang, who worked with a prominent salon in Rajouri Garden, had relations with Nand Kishore, a criminal who had come out of jail in 2010. "Gurang had met Nand Kishore a few months ago at a bus stop in Safdarjung Enclave and the two developed sexual relations. Gurang used to pay Kishore a handsome amount. But the money was not sufficient for the accused as he could not get a job after being released from jail and was always short of money for drugs and other expenses. So, he along with his accomplices decided to rob Gurang," said Chhaya Sharma, deputy commissioner of police, south district. "On September 6, Nand Kishore called Dilip and Pradeep to Gurang's house and strangled him," said the police. The police was informed by Gurang's neighbours, who got suspicious after stench started emanating from his room. "After inspecting the crime spot, the police concluded that the assailants had a friendly entry to the house. The cops then traced the person who had called Gurang on his mobile phone for the last time as a helper. The helper disclosed that on the day, three persons had borrowed his phone to make a call," said the police. |
Newly-wed woman ends life in Gokulpuri
New Delhi, September 12 A case of dowry death has been lodged with Gokulpuri police station. Since the woman died within seven years of her marriage, a sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) enquiry has been initiated. The deceased has been identified as Ritu. She was married to 25-year-old Naresh Kumar. "Ritu was found hanging by a rope tied to the ceiling fan at around 9 pm on Tuesday," a senior police official said. No suicide note has been recovered, though Ritu's father Shyam Babu has alleged a foul play and claimed that Naresh, a mechanic, may have killed her. "Naresh and his mother Sushila used to torture her. As far as I know, she had been bearing it all for the past few months. It is possible that Naresh and Sushila just hanged her up on the ceiling fan after killing her," Shyam said. Ritu's in-laws informed the police. A police control room vehicle then rushed her to the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital. She was declared brought dead. Ritu's neighbours in Ganga Vihar F-Block claim that the couple were often engaged in heated arguments. The police is questioning Naresh. Class XI student commits suicide
