According to the information, the villages of Revtighati, Pothing, Harsinghia Bagar and Uchat have been badly hit by the cloudburst.

“Besides, more than 15 villages in the Kapkot area have been cut off from rest of the district,” said Mohan Singh Takuli, a local leader from the Soong area, who attributed this cloudburst to local tunnels which have been made by hydro-electric companies operating in this part of the district.

“The concentration of clouds at one place and subsequent damage due to the cloudburst is the result of the construction of tunnel. It results in the loss of vegetation that has helped the tendency of clouds concentration at one place,” said Mohan Singh Takuli.

According to the district administration sources, the cloudburst has damaged the road which links the area, resulting in cutoff of more than 15 villages from the district.

“Not only the road, but the bridge on this road has also been washed away by the cloudburst,” said Kailas Tolia, SDM of Kapkot, who had reached the spot.

No roads, medical facilities on Raj Jaat Yatra route: MP
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, September 13
Rajya Sabha member and national spokesperson of the BJP Tarun Vijay today said the construction of roads and setting up of medical facilities on the Nanda Devi Raj Jaat Yatra route was pending due to insufficient allocation of funds by the Congress government.

"The construction of roads at Baan and Lohaganj are pending due to lack of funds. The government should allocate funds so that the work is over by the time the yatra starts next year," said Tarun Vijay, who is also the vice-president of the Nanda Devi Raj Jaat Yatra Committee constituted by the government.

The BJP leader said only Rs 50 crore had been allocated for the yatra which was too little. "The government should not hesitate to allocate funds for the historic yatra that is taking place for the first time after the creation of the separate state of Uttarakhand. According to estimates presented by Rakesh Singh Kunwar and Bhuwan Nautiyal who are the oldest organizers of the yatra, at least Rs 1,000 crore is required for the successful conduct of the yatra," said Tarun Vijay.

He also said on October 15, the Akhil Uttarakhand Samellan would be organised in Dehradun to chalk out strategy for the successful culmination of the yatra.

Police gets tough with traffic law offenders
Tribune News Service

Haridwar, September 13
The traffic police launched a drive against wrong parking of vehicles in Haridwar today. The offenders would be challaned and fine would be charged on the spot. Initially congested intersections and stretches like Chandracharya Chowk, Bhagat Singh Chowk and Ranipur have been earmarked where tow-away zones are being made.

Any vehicle found in non-parking zone or causing traffic jam due to haphazard parking are being challaned.

Spearheading the drive is Circle Officer, Traffic, JR Joshi, who is inspecting various stretches where the drive is being initiated.

Yellow lines are also being drawn to bifurcate the parking and no-parking areas adjacent to the roads.

“People in Haridwar have been flouting traffic rules despite traffic awareness drives being launched by the authorities. We got little support from the public and that’s why we have decided to strictly imply traffic rules,” said Joshi while carrying out penalisation drive at the Ranipur-Bhagat Singh intersection.

Trader community and responsible citizens have welcomed the drive. Heera Complex trader Uday Ram Semwal said his business was getting affected due to wayward parking in front of his shop.

Overloaded auto rickshaws and vikrams in the city have also come under the scanner of the traffic police. More than 60 auto rickshaws have been challaned for overloading.

“It has just been one day since the drive was launched and the impact is apparent. People need to follow the traffic rules and realise their responsibility,” added Joshi.

Purnagiri temple priests fear water shortage at annual fair
BD Kasniyal

Pithoragarh, September 13
The local administration has started thinking of alternative arrangements for drinking water at the Purnagiri temple at Tanakpur in Champawat district as the lone source of drinking water for the temple has dried up due to less rains this season.

“We have to make arrangements for the pilgrims who will visit the temple next month during ‘navratras’ as the Nigaligar-Purnagiri drinking scheme has started providing less water than expected,” said Kishen Tiwari, chief priest of the temple.

The priest community also seems to be worried about the water needs of the pilgrims who would attend the three-month-long Purnagiri fair. The annual fair begins after Holi. “If the alternative arrangements are not made, the problem will become worse at the time of the fair when more than 20 lakh pilgrims visit the temple,” said Tiwari.

Well acquainted with the problems, Tanakpur SDM Jaswant Singh Rathod said he was planning to get a mini tube well near the Bharav temple. He said underground water deposits had been found there. “We are also talking to NHPC officials to link the Purnagiri drinking scheme with the Symalatal pumping scheme during the mela,” said the SDM.

According to Champawat MLA Hemesh Kharkwal, a lift scheme from the Sharda river had been planned for the temple.

Our Correspondent

Mussoorie, September 13
The recovery of Rs 1,56,45,000 by the Rajpur police from a car coming from Jorhi Road on Tuesday night has stirred a political storm with Rajpur MLA Ganesh Joshi alleging that the cash belonged to the Congress and was being taken to Tehri to allure voters during the bypoll.

Farmers can control pesticide residue in basmati: Exporters
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, September 13
The All India Rice Exporters Association (AIREA) today said the farmers should make a judicious use of pesticides. The association was worried at the negative impact that the recent detection of pesticide residue in basmati rice by the US Food Drug Administration Agency could have on exports.

“The USA has a worldwide influence and can create problems on the issue, which is sure to impact the export of rice. Controlling the pesticide residue in rice is not in the hands of exporters or the dealers, but the farmers. We have been educating the farmers not to spray any pesticide at the time of flowering and beyond. This will help in reducing the presence of pesticide residue and enhance export of rice by 10-15 per cent,” said Rajan Sundaresan, Executive Director, AIREA.

He said the AIREA was trying to disseminate information about the use of pesticides among the farmers in rice producing states, including Uttarakhand. “The pesticide detected by the US agency is ‘tricyclazole’, which is used as a fungicide to control the rice blast. Since most of the pesticides commonly used on paddy in India are not registered in the USA, the level of detection is taken as the permissible level. The presence of residual pesticide beyond the permissible level is leading to rejection of export consignments. To ensure that the pesticide residue remain within the permissible limit the farmers need to adopt good agriculture practices,” added Rajan.

He said India had the potential of increasing its exports to the USA as due to a drought in Thailand, the rice production there had gone down. India could fill the gap.
