Diwakar Bhatt puts forth his candidature for Tehri bypoll
Sandeep Rawat
Tribune News Service

Haridwar, September 9
The upcoming Tehri Garhwal Lok Sabha byelection is all set to be an eye-catching contest. Today, veteran statehood agitator and Uttarakhand Kranti Dal (Democratic) founder Diwakar Bhatt put forth his candidature for the Tehri Lok Sabha election.

Bhatt has forwarded his name to the party's parliamentary selection committee, which will declare in a day or two the name of the eventual candidate.

Though, it is no secret that considering the heavy weight stature and being founder of the UKD (D), there seems little room for his name not being considered by the 12-member screening panel.

On August 25, Diwakar Bhatt in an interview to The Tribune had categorically denied any prospects of his contesting the election owing to health-related problems.

But today when he was questioned on this, Bhatt clarified: " Party workers have been demanding of late from me to contest the Tehri byelection. Also, I am recovering well. Though doctors have recommended knee surgery, I am ready to give it a temporarily skip and contest the election."

Bhatt had lost the last Assembly election from the Deo Prayag segment in Pauri Garhwal by 1571 votes to current Education Minister Mantri Prasad Naithani. The parental body, Uttarakhand Kranti Dal, had also split. Bhatt had gone into political oblivion.

This sudden decision is being seen as a symbol of revival of his political fortunes. He also wants to have a say in the state politics. To make sure he gets into the limelight, Bhatt is now holding talks with UKD wings Progressive and United, apart from third front parties Uttarakhand Raksha Morcha and Communists.

"We want to revive Uttarakhand Kranti Dal as well as a third front in Uttarakhand. National political parties have failed to deliver in the past 12 years as far as development and vision is concerned. Personal interests need to be sidelined as people of Uttarakhand had given their blood, sweat and lives for the creation of this separate hill state," Bhatt said.

Meanwhile, with Diwakar Bhatt coming into the election fray, both the BJP's and the Congress' electoral calculations will get affected by this move.

As Diwakar Bhatt has been the face of the UKD, which holds good ground in hill districts, including Tehri Garhwal, and has also been an active statehood freedom fighter since 1970, he has a good number of supporters.

In the late 90s, Diwakar Bhatt as a statehood activist had observed a 20-day-long fast at Kheth Parbat, near the revered shrine of Chandra Badni Temple in Tehri district, demanding a separate state status for the hill region of Garhwal-Kumaon divisions.

As Deo Prayag Assembly segment's in new delimitation falls in Tehri district, this will be a major advantage to his candidature, apart from his having a major say in hill regions of this constituency.

Tree plantation, functions mark Himalaya Day
SIDCUL employees form Paryavaran Sarankshan Samiti
Tribune News Service

Haridwar, September 9
Employees of industrial units situated in the Integrated Industrial Estate, SIDCUL, have taken up an environment cause in Haridwar. After regular hours of duty, the employees have formed a Sarv Hithay Paryavaran Sarankshan Samiti to cater to environmental causes.

Members of the samiti lamented that though the industrialisation had paved way for the development in the city, yet owing to this, the green cover had shrinked.

Taking cognizance of this, these employees were urging their company management to initiate a plantation drive on the factory premise, they were also doing it on their own.

The employees started a plantation drive at Shiv Lok Colony parks run by the Haridwar Development Authority.

Chief of the samiti Lokesh Kumar said compared to environment of Haridwar, prior to setting up of SIDCUL, today its quite harmful as without the tree cover, the pollution level had gone up.

“We thought that if the industrialisation and the urbanisation are a major factor behind this, then its our duty to plant as much saplings as we can to lower the impact on our local ecology” said Lokesh while initiating the plantation drive near the Shiv Lok temple, Phase-II.

Seeing this social initiative of factory employees, local people too are coming forward in this go green drive.

Local trader Uday Ram Semwal, who voluntarily came in to join the drive, said a few years ago, the Ranipur-Chandracharya-Bhagat Singh Chowk stretch had a dozen of trees but now there was not a single tree though commercial complexes had opened in large numbers.

The Sarv Hitay Paryavaran Sarankshan Samiti in coming days want to plant sapings at a regular interval and include SIDCUL employees in this environmental drive.
