Diwakar Bhatt puts forth his candidature for Tehri bypoll
Haridwar, September 9 Bhatt has forwarded his name to the party's parliamentary selection committee, which will declare in a day or two the name of the eventual candidate. Though, it is no secret that considering the heavy weight stature and being founder of the UKD (D), there seems little room for his name not being considered by the 12-member screening panel. On August 25, Diwakar Bhatt in an interview to The Tribune had categorically denied any prospects of his contesting the election owing to health-related problems. But today when he was questioned on this, Bhatt clarified: " Party workers have been demanding of late from me to contest the Tehri byelection. Also, I am recovering well. Though doctors have recommended knee surgery, I am ready to give it a temporarily skip and contest the election." Bhatt had lost the last Assembly election from the Deo Prayag segment in Pauri Garhwal by 1571 votes to current Education Minister Mantri Prasad Naithani. The parental body, Uttarakhand Kranti Dal, had also split. Bhatt had gone into political oblivion. This sudden decision is being seen as a symbol of revival of his political fortunes. He also wants to have a say in the state politics. To make sure he gets into the limelight, Bhatt is now holding talks with UKD wings Progressive and United, apart from third front parties Uttarakhand Raksha Morcha and Communists. "We want to revive Uttarakhand Kranti Dal as well as a third front in Uttarakhand. National political parties have failed to deliver in the past 12 years as far as development and vision is concerned. Personal interests need
to be sidelined as people of Uttarakhand had given their blood, sweat and lives for the creation of this separate hill state," Bhatt said. Meanwhile, with Diwakar Bhatt coming into the election fray, both the BJP's and the Congress' electoral calculations will get affected by this move. As Diwakar Bhatt has been the face of the UKD, which holds good ground in hill districts, including Tehri Garhwal, and has also been an active statehood freedom fighter since 1970, he has a good number of supporters. In the late 90s, Diwakar Bhatt as a statehood activist had observed a
20-day-long fast at Kheth Parbat, near the revered shrine of Chandra Badni Temple in Tehri district, demanding a separate state status for the hill region
of Garhwal-Kumaon divisions. As Deo Prayag Assembly segment's in new delimitation falls in Tehri district, this will be a major advantage to his candidature, apart from his having a major say in hill regions of this constituency. |
