Rs 1.04 cr, jewellery recovered from Fiza’s lockers

Anuradha Bali, aka Fiza A whopping Rs 1.04 crore cash and jewellery worth over Rs 30 lakh were recovered from three different bank lockers of Anuradha Bali, aka Fiza, today. The three lockers at the Punjab and Sind Bank, Sector 47, Punjab National Bank, Sector 17 and the State Bank of Patiala at the Punjab and Haryana High Court, were opened today by a team of the Mohali police

Prime Minister not coming, Rs 12 lakh spent on bulletproof enclosure

A bulletproof block for the VIPs at the CLTA Complex. In an anticipation of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit for the India-New Zealand Davis Cup tie being hosted by the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association (CLTA), Sector 10, the UT Administration has spent lakhs of rupees for a special bulletproof enclosure and for re-carpeting of roads leading to the CLTA.

The UT Administration says offering free drinks to couples, especially women, is not only encouraging drinking habit, but it also violates the provisions of the UT Excise Act.

Rs 5 hike in diesel price, cap on LPG cylinders come as a shock 
Learning about the hike in diesel prices, residents made a beeline for petrol stations in Chandigarh on Thursday evening. Chandigarh, September 13
The steep hike of Rs 5 per litre in diesel prices and restriction on using only six LPG cylinders in a year at subsidised rates has come in as a shock for tricity residents. Thursday night witnessed long queues of vehicles outside petrol stations as people flocked to fill tanks of the vehicles. The new prices will be effective from Thursday midnight.

Rainwater harvesting still a dream in many schools

The work on rainwater harvesting system, which started at 46 government schools in May, is yet to be completed in many schools. School principals said the contractors stopped the work midway without any intimation. The contractors even damaged the school infrastructure, including the playground, said the principals.

Monthly salary of UT’s contractual employees revised

The Chandigarh Administration has revised the monthly consolidated salary of contractual employees, appointed on whole-time basis, for the current financial year. The revised salary, however, will be applicable from the date of issuance of the order, which was made on September 7.

Lyngdoh guidelines violated: Police

While Panjab University is still in the process of calculating the estimated expenditure made by each student organisation during the elections, the Chandigarh Police has pointed out serious violation of the Lyngdoh guidelines in its report to the university, especially in the case of expenditure limit.

PU students protest over re-admission issue
Chandigarh, September 13
The newly elected Panjab University Campus Student Council (PUCSC) president staged a protest outside the Vice-Chancellor’s office today. The PUCSC president Satinder Singh said during the annual system, students of sciences department, who failed to clear their re-appear in the first year, was given a chance to take re-admission in the first year to start the course again.

Visually impaired students to stage play at PU

Prostitution racket busted
Panchkula, September 13
The Panchkula police has busted a prostitution racket at Raipur Rani and arrested seven persons. The racket was being run from Meera Wali Haveli at Raipur Rani. The accused have been identified as Raja Mohammad Hasan Multaba alias Johnny, his wife Rita, and their customers Vinod, Munish, Rakesh, Gulab Rana Khattoli and Khushi.

Police files chargesheet against SI

The UT police today filed a detailed chargesheet against Chandigarh Police sub-inspector Jaspal Singh Bhullar in a local court here on Thursday in connection with a case pertaining to the death of a motorcyclist.

Mata Gujri College win chess tourney

Mata Gujri College, Fatehgarh Sahib, won the inter-college chess championship (men) of Punjabi University, Patiala. The womens' title was won by Punjabi University, Patiala campus. The two-day long championship was organised at Mata Gujri College in which 18 teams of men and 14 teams of women participated.

City DAV team emerges victorious

In the ongoing Inter-College Cricket Tournament for Men (A-division), DAV College, Abohar, lost to the local DAV College by 6 wickets today. Batting first, the wining side posted a total of 169 runs. Shuvinder (43), Ramandeep (31) and Simran (41) contributing the lion's share. In reply, the local side achieved the target easily with Kunal Mahajan contributing 43 runs.

Patiala in strong position
