Awarded:
Himanshu Gupta, a graduate in architecture from the PTU GZS campus, Bathinda, has been presented the Best Innovative Design Award 2011-12 at the national level by the A3 Foundation, Chandigarh. The award was conferred on September 1 at the Government Art Gallery and Museum, Chandigarh.

Snake recovered: Volunteers of the Naujawan Welfare Society on Thursday recovered a snake from a snake charmer, who was collecting money from people on a roadside. The volunteers said they had also recovered more than one dozen snakes from various residential areas and homes in the city. This helped in saving lives that could have otherwise been lost to snake bites.

Blood donated: Meanwhile, volunteers of the Naujawan Welfare Society donated four units of blood for patients undergoing treatment at hospitals in the city, a press release issued by the NGO said.

Richshaw puller hurt in mishap: A rickshaw puller sustained a fracture in his leg in a road mishap. The injured, identified as Ashok Sharma, a resident of Pujaan Wala Mohalla, was rushed to a hospital by volunteers of the Naujawan Welfare Society, a local NGO (non-governmental organisation).

In-laws booked for woman's death
: Following Manju Devi's (32)death in a local private hospital, her husband Nishant, mother-in-law Kunti Devi and three others, residents of Krishna Nagar here, have been booked on a complaint filed by Shanker Verma, father of the deceased. It is alleged Manju had consumed a poisonous substance on September 10 following domestic bickering. She was admitted to a private hospital here where she died on Tuesday night. Manju of Bikaner in Rajasthan, who got married about eight years ago, is survived by two sons.

Newlywed ends life: A newly married woman reportedly committed suicide by setting herself on fire at Baldhan Khurd village, 20 km from here, on Wednesday. On a complaint lodged by Daya Chand, a resident of Karimod village of Bhiwani district and father of Asha Devi (19), the police has registered a case of dowry death against her husband Babloo and mother-in-law Maya Devi. Daya Chand alleged that his daughter, who got married to Babloo on June 29 this year, was harassed for more dowry by her in-laws.

Left parties protest
: The CPI and the CPM on Wednesday organised a demonstration and gheraoed the main post office here for over two hours seeking food security for the poor. The Left parties submitted a memorandum to the authorities, demanding provision for 35 kg of wheat to all BPL families at Rs 2 per kg. The parties alleged that the Centre was allowing large quantities of wheat to rot in godowns, but it was not willing to give it to the poor at subsidised rates.

Truck driver killed in road mishap:
Tilak Raj, driver of a truck, which rolled down from the Cart Road near Lalpali in the wee hours of Wednesday morning, died on the spot. According to the police, the mishap took place at about 6 am when the driver of the truck (HP-07-5384) lost control over the vehicle.
