Basement parking on Rajpur Road being used to build shops
Dehradun, September 4 The lack of a sufficient parking area has resulted in traffic chaos on the road. Moreover, there is no security system in place in the basement parking areas. Customers are being forced to park their vehicles on the road, constricting the space for other vehicles. SP (Traffic) Ajay Joshi said: “Many shops have come up in the basement of shopping complexes such as Sushil Departmental Store, Vinayak Property Complex and Raj Plaza on Rajpur Road. This basement is actually meant for parking. Not only this, builders have constructed a number of shopping complexes without allocating space for parking in the basement which is against the rules. There is no parking space at Uttaranchal Wills Centre, Meadow Arcade and International Trade Centre. Customers park their vehicles on the road, leading to traffic jams in the morning and the evening. It has become a headache for the traffic department.” On the other hand, Secretary of the MDDA Banshidhar Tiwari said: "I cannot take any action against those who have not provided parking space at their shopping complexes. But I will take action against those who despite having parking space in the basement have built shops there. Ironically, people are also not using the basement parking facility and prefer to park their vehicles outside." The parking lot at the MDDA Shopping Complex, Clock Tower, which was inaugurated a few days ago, is also not being utilised. The ground and first floors of the parking area are partially submerged in rain water. There is no security system in place in the basement parking. SP Joshi said: “In cities like Delhi, Noida and Gurgaon, cars are screened with bomb detector equipment before being allowed to be parked in the basement. No such security checks are in place in Dehradun. A bomb in a car in the basement can damage multi-story buildings. It is a very sensitive issue.” |
