Illegal constructions razed in Mussoorie’s Landour cantt area
Mussoorie, August 27 The demolition team was lead by the CEO, Landour cantt, Mussoorie, Ashok Kumar, accompanied by the SDM, Mussoorie, Ramjee Saran, and Circle Officer, MS Pharaswan. Around four buildings constructed illegally near Lakshmanpuri here were demolished. Some residents involved in the illegal constructions started the demolition exercise themselves on hearing about the arrival of the team in the area. The demolition of illegal constructions was met by stiff resistance by some local people but the cantt board officials, without paying any heed, continued with the exercise that carried on for at least four hours, assisted by the police. The local residents also alleged that the drive was being carried out without giving any prior notice and the cantt officials themselves had approved such constructions after taking graft amounting to around Rs 50,000. Resident Devendar Nautiyal, speaking to The Tribune, said, “The cantt board officials turned a blind eye when we began the constructions three years back, and now have turned up to demolish these, thus showing their indifferent attitude towards the residents of Landour Cantt Board here.” He also alleged that the tears of small and injured children also did not move the board officials, who carried on with the exercise without showing any sympathy. The residents alleged that the cantt board officials were not interested in acting against the high profile residents involved in illegal constructions but were bent upon destroying the lives of the poor people residing in Lakshmanpuri. The former cantt board president, Manmohan Singh Mall, opposing the move, said that the illegal constructions could not have taken place without the silent consent of the officials, and the Defence Ministry should conduct an enquiry into the whole matter as the persons with high approach were not being touched despite being involved in illegal construction activity. When contacted CEO, Landour Cantt Board, Mussoorie, Ashok Kumar, informed the media that most of the residents involved in illegal constructions were given notice of 10 days to remove these themselves. But as they failed to do so, the cantt board was not left with any option but to carry out the exercise, today. Speaking on the allegation of bribes taken by cantt board officials, he said that all allegations were baseless and the law will take its course without any bias. |
