Senior leaders skip Dhingra’s martyrdom day function
Amritsar, August 17 Barring Industry Minister Anil Joshi, no other noticeable minister from the government took part in the programme. The government had released an advertisement in various dailies claiming that Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, other Cabinet ministers, local Member of Parliament and all leaders would come to pay floral tributes to Dhingra at the function. The Industry and Technical Education Minister paid tributes on behalf of the government to Dhingra. He said it was amazing that Dhingra was only 26 when he was hanged. He said similarly “we should work towards turning India into a developed nation”. Joshi, presiding over the function, accepted that even after 65 years of Independence, the country had not realised the aim of freedom fighters and the need of the hour was to work in that direction. On this occasion, a blood donation camp, painting and declamation events were held. A documentary on Dhingra was also shown and the inmates and students of Pingalwara presented cultural programmes. Meanwhile, the Shahid Madan Lal Dhingra Smarak Samiti, floated by former Cabinet minister Laxmi Kanta Chawla held a function at Town Hall. She along with schoolchildren and leaders and workers of various political parties paid floral tributes to the martyr. Chawla said a memorial must be raised at the place of the demolished ancestral house situated at Katra Sher Singh inside the walled city. Advocating formulation of national and state-level policy to commemorate the martyrdom days of freedom fighters, Chawla said the practice of announcing holidays must be seized. Instead, she said educational institutions must hold seminars to educate students about the sacrifice of freedom fighters on that day. The samiti distributed eatables among children and public gathered on the occasion. As many as 40 schools were invited. The winners of the painting competition were given cash prizes. |

Afternoon showers lift spirits
Amritsar, August 17 Residents soaked in the downpour with a smile on their face. “It was a pleasant surprise and for me it was the first rain of the season. I enjoyed with some of my colleagues from work and nobody resented reaching the office in wet clothes,” said Shail Singla, who works as a financial consultant at a private bank. Street children indulged in a pool party of sorts on the roadside as the shower continued throughout the afternoon. Residents of Kashmir Avenue, Shivala Colony and Batala Road were disappointed as it did not rain here. “I hoped for good rain when I saw the weather change in the afternoon. While most parts received heavy rain, it was a mere 10-minute drizzle in our area,” says Gaurav Sally, a resident of Shivala Colony. It is the second time that the city has received such erratic rainfall. The MET department has predicted more rains and thundershowers in the region over the next three days. “First the monsoons have arrived late leading to a draught scare and now irregular rainfall doesn’t seem good news. Let us see if these conditions persist,” said Anupam Dayal, a resident of Adarsh Nagar. |

Traders oppose e-TRIP system
Amritsar, August 17 “The recent pronouncement of the Excise and Taxation Commissioner to implement e-TRIP system from August 10 has sent shock waves among the trading community as it recommends information regarding the movement of goods (within Punjab) shall be furnished by persons making a sale of Rs 3 lakh or above in a single transaction except in the case of iron and steel where the limit will be Rs 2 lakh and above.” He said this way the owner or the person in-charge of a goods vehicle would carry with him a record of the vehicle, goods receipt, a trip sheet or a log book, and a sale invoice or bill or cash memo, or a delivery challan containing such details, as may be prescribed, in respect of such goods meant for business, as are being carried in the goods vehicle and produce a copy each of the aforesaid documents to an officer in-charge of a check post. He claimed that only five per cent dealers have internet connection and they were dependent upon their accountants and other people for such works. Another trader Santokh Singh said e-TRIP requires information on the traveling distance and acknowledgement generated has to be time stamped. “It means if dealer’s goods do not reach the destined place within the stipulated time period the dealer shall be liable to pay penalty under Section 51, one of the most draconian section under the Punjab VAT Act,” he added. He said the power situation in the state was already grim and it led to a delay in filing of returns for the quarter ending June 30. Further the Central government has extended the time to file returns from July 31 to August 31 and the reasons were grim power situation in some parts of the country, including Punjab. He said adding to the misery of the dealers, ETC has issued following direction scrutiny and assessment of all the returns, authentication of all the bill books of dealers, to visit the shops on a regular basis, note down numbers of running bills, check customers for an invoice to be issued by the dealers, all the dealers to be visited in the next two months. He said all these directions were non-judicious, suppressive and incomplete contravention of the Punjab VAT Act. |
Hit by snags, Civil Hospital to change power panel machine
Amritsar, August 17 The hospital would buy the new panel machine at a cost of around Rs 5 lakh. The panel, which was installed in 2001, has outlived its age. Frequent electricity snags were witnessed at the hospital because of the fault in the panel machine. With new machine expected to be installed soon, the hospital would be able to ensure regular power supply in operation theatres. A doctor at the hospital said, “Sometimes due to the snag, it became difficult to conduct surgeries. Now, we hope that we will not face such a problem.” He said though the hospital had a generator, but it was not possible to run it owing to the snag. Senior Medical Officer Dr Balbir Singh Dhillon said it was found that main panel machine was the reason behind the disruption of power supply to the hospital. “The corporation has approved our proposal to change the machine, which will be changed after completion of the formalities,” he said. He said the hospital had sufficient money to buy the machine. |
‘Social networking websites should rethink on content management policy’
Amritsar, August 17 The case is not the first one, and most say that it won’t be the last if the social networking websites, which are fast becoming ‘suicide’ websites, rethink their content management policy. Last year, when a 23-year-old IIM Bangalore student committed suicide after her boyfriend quietly dumped her by updating his status on a social networking site, it initiated a huge debate on the content supervision by popular social networking websites and the need for a regulating body. But the recent suicide of Raksha Sharma is enough a proof that our youth is vulnerable to cyber bully and crimes through these social media portals. As the Punjab Police issued a notice to the popular social networking site Facebook asking for an upgradation of its content management policy, we talk to people in the city about the growing concerns over the gross abuse of such public online portals. “It’s not the first such incident. There have been reports of people, especially girls falling prey to cyber crimes easily. Everybody is catching up on Facebook these days. It holds authoritive power in making or breaking our social reputation. This becomes a bit overwhelming at times and we hear or read about more such incidents with each passing day,” says Smriti Arora, a student from BBK DAV. While these websites offer to enhance your social circle, they also pose a potential threat of exposing oneself to virtual bullying. “From what I read in the newspapers, Raksha was an orphan from Kashmir whose parents were gunned down by terrorists. But what she experienced was worse. Her own friends and peers terrorised her online by posting obscene material on Facebook. It’s time that people get some etiquette training on social networking websites and some strict laws made to curb such horrific incidents,” said Akanksha Aggarwal pursuing engineering from ACE, Manawala. There have been recent studies that reveal the threat of abuses through social media. Contributing to the spread of suicides, these websites have come under scanner. But the responsibility of such incidents fall on the shoulders of all those who live in this virtual world. “Everyone who is using these websites is a part of a rat race for grabbing attention. Youngsters seek approval and trust from their friends on FB and such is the impact that one post or update can make or break their social reputation. But they fail to understand that by putting all your private information or thoughts on a public forum is bound to have some volatile effects,” says Preeti Kapoor, an Art of Living instructor from the city. “The world around which our youngsters live has transformed. For them, the virtual world is now the real world and social networking has become the basis of their relationships. We don’t choose our friends online, but they are forced upon us. Also, there is this tremendous insecurity among youngsters that they seek trust from random people on these websites. So, the reactions too are shocking. Minor transgressions are having major results. We seriously need to help them with this otherwise such incidents will keep on happening,” explains Paramjit Judge, professor, Sociology, GNDU. |
