MC vehicle violates one-way traffic rule
Jalandhar, August 14 What to talk of the general public, government vehicles keep on flouting the rule of one-way traffic for the road from the Jalandhar city railway station towards Madan Flour Mill. The Tribune team found a cleansing vehicle of the Municipal Corporation Jalandhar (MCJ) openly flouting the rule at 5.27 pm on Tuesday. No traffic police personnel was on seen on duty there at that time. Interestingly on seeing the MCJ vehicle entering the one-way road, a private car also followed it in violating the rule. The road had been declared one way for traffic several months ago, as a number of passengers failed to reach the station on time due to traffic snarls on the road and several of them missed their trains. A social activist Rajat Mohindru said, “The traffic police should strictly implement the one-way rule, as despite declaring the road as one way, a number of passengers still miss their trains as they fail to reach their detination in time after being stuck in the traffic snarls.” “The MCJ should also clear the encroachments by several shopkeepers on this road for ensuring smooth flow of traffic,” he added. Official speak The question of violation of the one-way traffic rule for the road between Jalandhar city railway station and Madan Flour Mill by MC vehicle does not arise, as a traffic personnel remains on duty there between 8 am and 8 pm. Even if it has happened, the vehicle will be challaned after the publication of the news-item. As far as the encroachments are concerned, that is the work of the MCJ to clear them. — Jasbir Singh Rai, ACP, Traffic |

A proud moment for woman police officer
Jalandhar, August 14 Hailing from Hoshiarpur, she joined the police as an inspector in 2001. Like her namesake Manjit Kaur, who has won gold thrice at the Asian Games and is also DSP like her in the Punjab Police, this Manjit, too, has been an international-level athlete. She has twice won gold in 100 metres race at the World Police Games held in 1997 and 2001. Manjit says she always drew inspiration from former top cop Kiran Bedi. “As a young girl, I always felt inspired viewing her on TV and seeing her pictures in newspapers. I used to share this with my dad who retired from the BSF. It was he who always encouraged me to participate in sports and join the police force,” she says. Being a woman police officer has a great charm, she says, adding that there are a whole lot of facilities that she gets. “But somehow lots of adjustments have to be made for leading a family life, especially with a small kid. My husband is posted as inspector in the intelligence wing with the BSF at Gurdaspur. It’s me who has to all alone take care of my six-year old son. He is studying here at Police DAV School,” she said. Asked if she felt that she was now senior to her husband by post, she responded saying, “No, it’s not that way. We joined the forces at the same time. Since his is in a Central government job, the promotions come a little late.” |
