Tyre godown gutted in fire
Jalandhar, August 13 For precautionary measures, the police had also evacuated several houses situated adjacent to the godown. However, no loss of life was reported. According to sources, fire broke out at about 2.15 am today and a few minutes after receiving the information as many as 10 fire tenders were sent to douse the flames. Fire officials claimed that as the fire was of huge intensity, 10 fire tenders found it hard to douse the flames. “As many as 100 water tanks were consumed to extinguish the blaze, which means every fire tender had to be refilled for 10 times,” a fire official averred. Fire tenders took 12 hours to douse the flames. Inspector Bimal Kant Sharma, SHO of the Division No 8 police station, said as the godown was located in a residential area, for precautionary measures the police got about 15 nearby houses vacated and almost all residents took their valuables to safer places. “We have still not received any complaint from the godown owner, but to know the exact cause of fire, the police will enquire on its own,” the SHO said. The owner of the godown, Jagdish, resident of Baldev Nagar, could not be contacted despite repeated attempts. |
Woman’s mysterious death: Kin blame NRI husband, in-laws
Jalandhar, August 13 The family had filed a written complaint before the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) to seek action against the alleged accused. Harmel Singh, a resident of Cheema Kalan village near Phillaur, told media that her daughter Amandeep Kaur (deceased) had married Sukhdev Singh (a resident of Canada) of Raiwal village near Shahkot in 2010. A few months after the marriage, her daughter had also gone to Canada, the victim’s father said, alleging that last month, Amandeep along with her husband Sukhdev, father-in-law Charan Singh, mother-in-law Surinder Kaur and sister-in-law Jasvir Kaur had come to India to attend some marriage function and all were living at their village Raiwal. “On July 26, the victim’s husband called me up and said Amandeep had suddenly fallen ill and had been admitted to a private hospital in Jalandhar. She was later discharged from the hospital and was again taken back to the village by Sukhdev (her husband),” the girl’s father asserted. A day after, they were informed by her in-laws that she (Amandeep) had again fallen ill and had been admitted to a hospital at Lohia Khas, where she died under mysterious circumstances, a few hours later. After her death, they had come to know that before flying to India, the victim’s husband had taken an insurance policy of Amandeep in Canada and to encash the policy, worth several crores, the girl’s father alleged that her husband, in connivance with her parents, conspired to kill her. |
Restaurant, jewellery shop burgled
Jalandhar, August 13 Burglars broke into a restaurant, Quality Junctions, at New Udham Singh Nagar and took away three LPG cylinders, inverter, weighing machine and ice-creams. Restaurant owner Deepak, resident of Basti Sheikh, said he was informed by nearby shopkeepers that the main locks of his shop were lying broken and on reaching the spot he found his shop burgled. He had informed the police. In another incident, burglars struck at a jewellery shop, Om Shakti Jewellers, at Mand village, near here. Shop owner, Raj Kumar, resident of New Geeta Colony, said early morning he was informed about the burglary by his friends, who noticed broken main locks of the shop. “When I reached the spot, I found the whole shop ransacked. The miscreants took away Rs 10,000 and gold ornaments worth several lakhs of rupees. He said the police had been informed. |
Woman commits suicide
Jalandhar, August 13 The victim’s brother Kuldeep told the police that her brother-in-law and husband used to “behave inhumanly” with her daughter and many a time, they even beat her up. They also blamed her in-laws for torturing her for dowry. The police had booked Pushp Kumar and brother-in-law Balwinder under Section 306 of the IPC. |
340 cancer patients seek government help
Jalandhar, August 13 As per the scheme, the cancer patients can avail a one-time financial aid up to Rs 1.5 lakh for their treatment from the state government, irrespective of their financial status. The patient’s guardian has to apply for the aid prior to taking the treatment, citing the recommendation and estimated expenditure to be incurred from the doctor he is taking treatment from. “The application has to be sent as soon as possible, as there is no provision of any re-imbursement,” said Dr Surinder of Civil Hospital. He said all applications were forwarded to a board of doctors, headed by Deputy Commissioner Jalandhar for the clearing of the cases. The SDM concerned also gets the verification of the facts done by sending across his staff to the house of the patient, he added. There are nearly 26 empanelled hospitals in the list in Punjab, in addition to the government hospitals. There are six hospitals in Amritsar, seven in Ludhiana, four in Bathinda, five in Mohali, one each in Patiala, Muktsar Sahib, Chandigarh and Ropar for the purpose. No hospital in Jalandhar listed
Unfortunately, not even a single hospital in Jalandhar is empanelled in the scheme. The list put up in the Civil Surgeon office does not even mention the name of Patel Hospital, which is getting maximum number of cancer patients in the city. Civil Surgeon Dr RL Bassan said he had asked the hospital authorities several times to sign an MoU for the same, but there had been no response from the other side. Dr Sudarshan Sharma, director of Patel Hospital, said he had recently signed an MoU. “We were a bit reluctant, as the rates mentioned for each type of treatment by the government in the scheme are far too less. The Civil Hospital authorities have been telling us to give discount to the patient as per the rates mentioned and charge the remaining amount from the patient. This is extremely difficult as the patients do not understand this and start fighting with us. The radiotherapy charges given by the government are just Rs 2,500, which can be levied only by hospitals like the PGI and not by us. We are paying Rs 25 lakh as its annual maintenance to the company,” he
elaborated. He added, “We have now somehow agreed. We are doing it for ex-servicemen through the ECHS and RCF employees as well as part of their own schemes. We will do it now for
them also.” |
Congress seeks Sukhbir’s resignation
Jalandhar, August 13 Going one step further, former Congress MLA from Bholath Sukhpal Khaira urged Sukhbir to deposit in the public exchequer from his own pocket the entire expenditure incurred on his entourage to London as he had failed to do anything for encouraging sports in the state. Khaira expressed surprise that the sportspersons from Punjab figured nowhere on the scene, despite the fact that the country as a whole had improved its medal tally in the London Olympics. On the contrary, neighbouring states like Haryana and Himachal Pardesh had brought laurels to India with their sportspersons shining in London, he said, adding that Sushil Kumar, Yogeshwar Dutt, Gagan Narang, Saina Nehwal did Haryana proud, whereas Vijay Kumar and Mary Com, hailing from small states like Himachal Pradesh and Mizoram, respectively, performed well. Khaira stated that the failure of sportspersons from Punjab clearly reflected on the poor sports policy of the state government and its sports Minister Sukhbir Badal. “Although Sukhbir has been shouting from the rooftop of having brought a new sports policy and having created new sports stadiums and infrastructure, yet the performance of Punjab has been miserable not only in the Olympics, but also the National Games,” he added. The game of hockey, which is largely dominated by players from Punjab was the worst hit with the team ending up last on the charts and so was the case with the shooters from Punjab. The failure in London also confirmed various reports that the youth of Punjab were on to drugs in a big way, he alleged. To further rub salt on the wounds of Punjabis, Sukhbir opted to proceed to London with his entourage after the flop show of the players from the state. Khaira alleged that the so-called delegation was in London not to cheer up the players, but to have fun and extravaganza at the cost of the public exchequer. Therefore, owing moral responsibility for the utter failure of Punjab in the Olympics, Sports Minister Sukhbir Badal must resign. He should also quit as the president of the Hockey Federation, Punjab, he said, adding that he should follow the example set by the coaches of the Indian archery and hockey teams, who have owned up to the failure of their teams. |

Independence day celebrations
Jalandhar, August 13 The flags are available in three sizes - 2 by 3 feet, 3 by 4.5 feet and 4 by 6 feet. The first size, which is the most saleable, is priced at Rs 567, second at Rs 1,150 and the third one at Rs 1,420. The sale of other khadi items, including stitched and unstitched kurta pyjamas, ladies colourful printed kurtas and silk khadi sarees, also goes up during this time. Sudesh Kumar, manager, said, “We have a fixed clientele for all such items who generally visit around this time. It could be only a few schools who pack up and reuse the Tricolour year after year, but most organisations change their flags ahead of the function.” He added that since there were just a few hand weavers left in Punjab, most of the stuff was coming from Gujarat, Kolkata and other cities.
Rules governing national flag
The flag, by law, is to be made of khadi, hand-spun cloth or cotton or silk, promoted by Mahatma Gandhi. Those unfurling flags made of any material other than khadi can face imprisonment up to three years and a fine. The manufacturing process for the flag is specified by the Bureau of Indian Standards. The right to manufacture flag is held by the Khadi Development and Village Industries Commission. |

Six hurt in clash over land
Amritsar, August 13 There was a dispute between the families of Nirmal Singh and Baljit Singh over a land measuring over 2 kanals located in front of the Nirmal’s house. Ranbir Singh, a relative of Nirmal Singh, claimed that the Punjab and Haryana High Court had granted a stay on the disputed property in favour of Nirmal Singh and his family. For the last several years, the said land had become a bone of contention between the families. Yesterday, Baljit Singh along with Gurjit Singh and over a dozen armed assailants attacked Nirmal and his son who were parking their vehicle at home. Ranbir alleged that the accused, who were armed with pistols and sharp-edged weapons, attacked and fired indiscriminately in which Nirmal Singh, Karanjit Singh and an aged person Harbirpal Singh and a relative of Nirmal Singh sustained injuries. While Nrimal and Karanjit suffered injuries on their heads, Harbirpal Singh sustained a bullet injury. They were rushed to a private hospital here. Three persons, including Jagbir Singh, from the other side were also injured in the clash. Ranbir alleged that the families had entered into a verbal dual earlier in the evening. He said Nirmal Singh had already informed the Ramtirath police regarding the verbal dual. “This infuriated Gurjit Singh and Baljit Singh, who along with armed persons attacked the victim’s house,” said Ranbir adding that the victim’s family retaliated in defence. Preet Paul Singh Virk, SSP, Amritsar rural police district, said a case of attempt to murder besides other relevant sections of IPC and Arms Act has been registered against the accused in this connection. Further investigation was going on, he added. |
Filth, traffic chaos surround inter-state bus terminal
Jalandhar, August 13 Few hours of rain on sunday which had drowned the city in rain water, had not even spared the entry and exit points of ISBT. Commuters were seen wading through the water logged underpass to get entry into the bus stand. Though, the MC authorities had claimed to lay storm water sewerage outside the bus-stand, but the water-logging problem beneath the BMC-Khalsa college overbridge was
not overcomed. Another issue which had been highlighted despite the tall claims of authorities, is the ill-management of traffic and encroachments. Unscheduled stoppage of buses underneath the overbridge, ill-mannered parking of three wheelers and crawling of rickshaws has made the traffic scene worse. Moreover, the traffic commotion has led to a huge traffic jam and serpentine queues of vehicles presented the dirty picture of traffic management. “It seems that traffic police and MC officials are in deep slumber and had no time to improve the traffic mismanagement and prevalent insanitation outside ISBT,” said Pardeep Nayyar, a student. The auto-pullers and rickshaw pullers have their own words to say. “Administration has not allotted us any specific space for parking, leaving us with no other option to park beneath the under bridge,” they said. |

No headway in abetment to suicide case
Jalandhar, August 13 Assistant sub-inspector Satpal said raids were being conducted by the police at the suspected hideouts of the accused, but to no avail. It seemed that the accused had left the city to escape arrest. It may be recalled here that on August 10, Ashok Kumar had allegedly ended his life after certain persons blamed his sons for stealing cash from the temple and they had also thrashed him. Following this humiliation, the man took the extreme step of suicide. Meanwhile, the police had booked five persons, Roshan, Ramesh, Ram Behram, Jeeta and Sethi, on the charge of abetment to suicide under Section 306 of the IPC. |
