Ramdev calls off fast, fight to go on
New Delhi, August 14 Taking a clear anti-Congress stand and targeting the Prime Minister Manhoman Singh, he exhorted his supporters at Ambedkar Stadium to gear up for early Lok Sabha elections. “The fast has ended but the struggle will go on. Now we are not going to fast anymore but work towards the change during the next polls. We’ll remove this government,” he said, while reiterating that he does not have any political agenda. Before this, Delhi Police appealed the yoga guru and his supporters to vacate the stadium on security grounds in view of the Independence Day celebrations. “Tomorrow is Independence Day. So, due to security reasons we ask you to leave the Ambedkar Stadium,” said ACP Devesh Srivastava before the yoga guru broke Pointing his guns at PM, Ramdev accused him of lack of political will in bringing back money from abroad. The attacks was laced with his typical Harayanvi phrases and dialect that earned him a lot of applause from his supporters. “This corrupt government is holding the country to ransom. It has played with the dreams of those who have laid down their lives for it. Tomorrow on August 15, the PM is answerable to the nation on the black money and corruption,” said Ramdev, while taking a clear jibe asking the PM to leave politics. Riding high on anti-Congress alliances’ support, he said, “We could have stopped the PM from hoisting the National Flag tomorrow but it would not be right. We respect the sacrifice made by seven lakh brave Indians. We are not leaving this place defeated…. It is just that the first leg of the agitation is over and we are going victorious. We have made parties come together on the issue of black money and it was only Congress which now stands on the other side,” he said. He resolved to oust the Congress from power in the next polls, urging his supporters to go back and spread the message of uprooting the Congress-led government. “The Congress is responsible for poverty, inflation. Hence, boycott the Congress leaders in the next elections,” he added. Ramdev was accompanied by former law minister during the NDA regime and lawyer Ram Jethmalani, who too raised the anti-Congress pitch saying, “Six hundred crore is not a small amount….Why is the government not disclosing the names of those guilty of having black money kept abroad? Half of the cabinet is corrupt.”

Lok Sabha disrupted over Mumbai violence New Delhi, August 14 It took them just three months to forget the resolution passed on the 60th anniversary of the first sitting of Parliament. The resolution read: “We commit ourselves to strengthening democratic values, enhancing government’s accountability to people and rededicating ourselves to nation-building.” Today, the question hour was adjourned after the Left demanded its suspension to discuss the food security law and universalisation of PDS and the Shiv Sena and Congress members sparred over Saturday’s rioting in Mumbai where around 50,000 persons gathered to denounce Assam violence ended up attacking the police and the media. Later during zero hour, while Shiv Sena leader Anant Geeta demanded a status report from the Centre accusing the Congress-NCP government in Maharashtra of failing to prevent violence, Congress MP Sanjay Nirupam sought an inquiry but warned against innocent Muslims being targeted. The rally, organised by Raza Akademi, saw two killings and injuries to 44 policemen. The furor ended after Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Bansal said he would speak to Home Minister and make a statement in a few days. A saga of disruptions Till the last Session, the 15th LS had wasted 447 hours to adjournments and forced disruptions, while it worked only for 877 hours. The same trend was witnessed across all sessions of the 15th LS. Except in the inaugural session when MPs sat for 28 hours, the House has been losing one third of its time to disruptions |

Maharashtra Congress loses one of its stalwarts
Mumbai, August 14 Away from prying eyes, Deshmukh whose illness was diagnosed about a year ago was being treated at Breach Candy hospital. Though his condition improved, Deshmukh was following doctors’ advice to reduce his workload. According to observers, Chavan’s continuance as CM was as much due to his favoured position with Congress leadership as Deshmukh’s ill-health. Congressmen saw Deshmukh as a pragmatic leader who could keep his party colleagues happy by ‘getting their work done’. It is no secret the real estate lobby in the state, particularly Mumbai, was the biggest contributor to the Congress’s coffers and Chavan has virtually choked funding, thanks to transparent measures adopted in clearing construction proposals. Most of the party’s leaders and the state’s builder lobby who have had close ties for years were depending on Deshmukh or someone else like him to
take over so that discretionary powers enjoyed by politicians and bureaucrats in permitting urban land use in the past
were restored. Unlike Ashok Chavan, seen as greedy even by builders’ lobby, Deshmukh was seen as a pragmatic leader who could accommodate their interests within limits.

Work with honesty, Antony tells armed forces
New Delhi, August 14 “Corruption not only affects the morale of the personnel, but also has many other implications,” Antony said in his customary broadcast over the All India Radio (AIR) to the Armed Forces this evening. Armed Forces of India have been known for their hard work, determination, efficiency and discipline. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that the excellent work done by our Armed Forces is not undone at any cost. Saying that the terrorism had still not been rooted out completely, Antony stressed on the need to be vigilant. Utmost restraint and discipline must be exercised, he said. “There must not be even a single case of human rights violations anywhere. Such violations undo at one stroke, all the good work and tarnish the image of our Forces,” Antony said.
