UK college ‘cheats’ couple
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, August 1
A city-based couple was allegedly duped of lakhs of rupees by a UK-based college, International College of Excellence (ICE), in connivance with a local travel agent.

Gaganjot Singh, a Cool Road locality resident, alleged that his wife Anita Raj Sohal had approached the college authorities for pursuing a diploma in hospitality management in the UK. After consulting a travel agent Amit Bhatia, running an immigration firm “Rising Career” and after depositing a demand draft for 5,500 pounds in favour of the college, she was sent to the UK on a study visa on October 12, 2011.

Talking to mediapersons today, Sohal claimed that she was stunned to find the ICE premises in the UK locked, where its management had winded up its establishment.

She claimed to have met scores of other students there, who had been sent to the UK on study visa by the travel agent, but were feeling duped and ruined there.

I, however, managed to fly back to Jalandhar in October 2011 and approached the travel agent and the ICE director Aman Sareen here. They both shifted the responsibility to the college proprietor, Sohal added.

The case was later brought to the notice of Assistant Commissioner of Police and a complaint was lodged with the police station division No 6, but no action has been taken by the police authorities as yet, claimed Gaganjot Singh.

Amit Bhatia was not available for comments while Sareen said the complaint had been sent to the authorities at the UK.

The complainant could not get adjusted with her relatives and other friends there and was unnecessarily dragging me into the case, he claimed.

Jalandhar, August 1
A city-based contractor was allegedly cheated by a Kolkata-based construction company - Dhoot Developers Private Limited - of crores of rupees. The contractor, HS Sodhi, managing director of Fortune Riders, a city-based construction company, was allegedly also threatened with dire consequences by the company officials.

Taking a note of the complaint of Sodhi, the Ferozepure police has also booked SPS Saini, HS Langotia, Vishwas Saini, Pawan Kumar Dhoot and Vaibhav Tapdiya, senior company officials and a case under Sections 420, 120-B, 380, 465, 467, 468 and 471 of the IPC was registered against them at the Ferozepure cantonment police station.

In a complaint to the Ferozepure police chief, HS Sodhi alleged that company men PM Saini, Langotia and certain others were “mishandling” construction material and machinery worth Rs 1.5 to Rs 2 crore lying at the Ferozepure Cantonment area.

The Kolkata-based construction company, Dhoot Developers Private Limited, that was allocated construction work by the Army authorities, had sub-let the work to Jalandhar-based firm - Fortune Riders.

The accused had earlier restricted them from entering the site and threatened them with dire consequences, following which Sodhi claimed to have filed a writ petition before the Delhi High Court. The high court then issued notice to the Dhoot Company and allowed us to collect the material from the site.

In the complaint, Sodhi further alleged that the company staff not only restricted their access to the site but also dispersed their material and machinery.

Station house officer (SHO) Ferozepure Cantonment, Dalbir Singh, however, said that a case had been registered against SPS Saini, HS Langotia, PM Saini and certain others of the company on the complaint of Sodhi. The case was registered only after getting a go-ahead from senior officials, claimed Balraj Mohan, investigating officer.

The police has initiated investigations in the case and action would be taken against those found guilty, the SHO added.

The man who wouldn’t leave son to fate
14-year-old Boy needs four surgeries for his state to improve
Aparna Banerji
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, August 1
A man tours the streets of Jalandhar, driving a wheeled wagon on which lies a little, pale, weak-limbed figure supported with pillows and mattresses and sheltered by a black umbrella tied to the wagon.

He occasionally looks back at the cart, and drives away the swarm of flies sitting on the gaping mouth of the figure.

Shambhu, father of 14-year-old handicapped child Sonu, lying on the cart, is a man who commands respect.

Even in a situation where many (richer and stronger than him) would have given up hope, Shambhu fights on for the life of his son and has dedicated himself wholly to tend to his needs.

Originally a Malda (West Bengal) resident, Shambhu’s son has been handicapped for the past 14 years.

“Fifteen-20 days after he was born, Sonu’s health started deteriorating and he suffered deformities. We spent all we could to save his life, but I do not have any more money for the surgeries prescribed for him. I can’t leave him uncared for at home, so I carry him around in the city. We go to bazaars and public places and some kind people sometimes also give us money,” says Shambhu.

Previously a rickshaw-puller, Shambhu had to give up the job after his wife began suffering bad health and couldn’t take care of Sonu. “She has a stone in her stomach that needs to be operated upon. Doctors ask for Rs 10,000. I don’t have that kind of money. So there is no one to look after Sonu. Hence, I have decided to leave rickshaw pulling and carry him around in the city,” Shambhu says.

Belonging to an adivasi tribe, Shambhu works as a daily wage labourer off and on. He spends most of his time with his son. His family runs on about Rs 1,000 to 1,200 per month.

Shopkeepers at the Rainak and Sheikhan Bazaars know him and have helped him, as do the security and canteen staff at the Civil Hospital, where he is a regular visitor.

Living in Jalandhar for the past 15 to 20 years, Shambhu also has an elder son Sandeep (17), who quit studying to do odd jobs for money and a 12-year-old daughter Radha, who studies in a government school.

“Since Sonu was small, I have been taking care of his bathing and feeding him,” says Shambhu, feeding some sabzi and roti he got from a food stall, to Sonu.

In response, the child moves his sparkling eyes and issues unintelligible sounds.

He can’t sit up, can’t move, can’t drive off flies from his face, can’t feed himself. I do everything. But he understands a lot. When he was small, we were scared we would lose him, but I am grateful that doctors saved his life. We have spent Rs 38,000 for his treatment so far,” says Shambhu.

“Now, doctors say his state will improve if four surgeries are conducted on him. Although it is still not sure, whether he will be able to sit up. For the surgeries, we need Rs 1.5 lakh. I hope someday I am able to arrange the money and get my son treated. Till then I will take care of him,” a teary-eyed Shambhu says.

Shambhu lives at house no. 8, New Anand Nagar, Garib Das da Khuh, Maqsoodan, Jalandhar.

Jalandhar, August 1
An assistance from good Samaritans in the city could remove a stumbling block from the life of this ambitious engineering student at Dr BR Ambedkar National Institute of Technology (NIT) here.

Chandan Kumar, a financially weak and physically challenged boy from Gaya, Bihar, has taken admission to Chemical Engineering Department in the NIT, but finding it difficult to cover the distances in the huge campus, as he has been using a hand-driven wheelchair.

Since, the hand-driven wheelchair requires extra effort and at times an attendant as well, the boy has been looking forward to assistance in kind or cash to make his education in the campus easy. He requires a motorised wheelchair, which can make him independent and make his movement in the campus hassle-free.

Talking to Jalandhar Tribune, Chandan said due to the hand-driven wheelchair, he has to remain dependent on his batch mates as well hostel roommates. “Although, my classmates as well the hostel roommates help me in moving to different places, but at times, I find it difficult to move, as nobody is available. If I get a motorised wheelchair, it will reduce my dependency on others and I will be able to move easily,” he added.

Even on the day of his admission, Chandan had reached the campus by crawling on his hands, as his lower limbs have been polio-afflicted. The NIT faculty as well as the administration had assisted the boy by providing him a wheelchair right on the first day of his admission. “The NIT faculty had directed my brother to buy a wheelchair and that its bill was to be reimbursed by them. As we have a hand-to-mouth existence, my brother could just buy me a simple wheelchair, which cost around Rs 4,500,” he added.

Professor Dr Rohit Mehra of the NIT Admission cell said if some Samaritan helped Chandan by providing him a motorised wheelchair, it would be indeed a great service. “Even we would be providing him various scholarships through the Ministry of Human Resource (MHRD) under the physically challenged category,” he added.

Chandan had bagged 300165th rank in the All-India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) and made it to the NIT under the OBC-cum-physically handicapped category. He hails from a financially weak family and his father, who runs a floor mill, has a family of 10 to feed. “I want to make use of this golden oppurtunity of rising in life through quality education at a leading institute and help my family,” he added.

A woman, Guriya Devi, from Nagra village, who was in a hospital to get her eight-month-old baby girl treated for gastroenteritis, said she was yet to receive the money for the delivery of her girl eight months ago, as per the NRHM scheme.

“I am entitled to an amount of Rs 1,200 but I haven’t got a single penny so far,” she said.

“The ASHA worker, who brought me here, gave me a copy of the delivery papers. The hospital doesn’t give me the money. It is asking for an original copy, and my ASHA worker says you yourself get the money,” Guriya says.

Guriya’s husband is an alcoholic who makes sacks for a living. She used to work as a domestic help at homes, but had to leave the job to take care of her two kids.

“If he feels like, my husband gets something to eat, or he just roams around and drinks,” she said.

If I get the NRHM money, I will at least be able to feed my kids,” she said.

Guriya also did not get the transportation charges when her baby was born.

Cantonment Dasehra ground issue
Councillors await Army reply
Kusum Arora
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, August 1
The dharna of the cantonment board councillors continued for the second day today, as the Army authorities were yet to respond to the pending issue of the use of the Dasehra ground in Jalandhar Cantonment.

All seven elected members of the board along with the cantonment residents and representatives of various social organisations, joined hands with them. Today the councilors remained on dharna from 10 am to 2 pm.

However, rumours kept doing rounds in the cantonment that the Army had agreed to allow the civilians to use the ground for the upcoming Dasehra festivities. “We received certain messages through various mediators who were in touch with the Army officers that we should stop the dharna and that the issue would be sorted out,” the councillors said.

The councillors, on the other hand, remained adamant on their stand that they would not discontinue the dharna until a written permission for the same was given to them by the Army authorities. “Till evening, we kept on receiving messages that the Army had finally agreed and that we would be able to hold the Dasehra in the ground but it was all fake assurance,” said Avinash Sharma, councillor of ward number 3.

It was also stated that on August 8, Sadar Bazaar would remain closed and shopkeepers would join the protest and gherao Mall Road. “We have decided to gherao the Mall Road from 10 am on August 8 and vehicular movements would be barred on the road that day. Our protest would be peaceful. We have no option but to adopt such practices, as the Army authorities have deliberately turned a blind eye towards the demand of the public,” he added.

The councillors also added that the residents of nearby villages namely-Sansarpur, Dhina, Khusropur, Jamsher, Sofi Pind, Kukar Pind, Rehmanpur, Talhan and Rama Mandi had been celebrating Dasehra in the Dasehra ground for ages and that the denial of the Army authorities would lead to resentment among the public. “This would not just hurt the religious sentiments of the public but also lead to differences in the Army-civilians relations,” the councillors added.
