The accused were identified as Lakhbir Kaur and her son Sarvan Singh, a resident of Geeta Colony here. The other accused, Sandeep Singh, also a son of Lakhbir, is at large. The fake travel agency came to light only after the intervention of the Police Commissioner. Assistant sub-inspector Resham Singh said 14 victims, who were duped of several lakh rupees by the duo, had directly complained to the Police Commissioner for help. The investigation officer said the accused were running a travel agency from their home only and had issued scores of fake visas of Canada to the victims, adding that the fraud was exposed when the foreign-bound aspirants cross-checked the issued visas from the Canadian embassy and found them to be fake. Acting on a tip-off, the accused were nabbed from their residence and 12 fake visas were also recovered from them. The accused have been sent to jail. Vegetable-fruit traders duped of lakhs

For the initial few days, the accused, to take the local agents in confidence, used to make cash payment of the daily supply. Police sources said a few days ago, the alleged person took the supply of fruits and vegetables of worth several lakhs, but did not return to clear payment of the same.” The vegetable traders also went to inquire about the person at his rented accommodation at the Ladhewali locality, but the accused had already gone missing. Embezzlement in market fees in Kapurthala district Dharmendra Joshi Tribune News Service
Kapurthala, July 25 Confirming this, Punjab Mandi Board chairman Ajmer Singh Lakhowal told The Tribune that Punjab Mandi Board deputy GM Jagtar Singh Sanghera would conduct the inquiry into the embezzlement. He had been asked to submit his report within two days, he added. To a query, Lakhowal said Harminder Singh was shifted from Kapurthala, as he did not take any action regarding the embezzlement case on his own. If his involvement was found in the embezzlement during the inquiry, he would also be suspended, he added. Punjab Mandi Board chairman said, “No guilty officer will be spared at any cost. The records concerned from the inter-state barriers at Madhopur and Shambhu to know exact amount of evading market fees will be procured.” The alleged embezzlement of lakhs of rupees of market fees by some employees of Kapurthala market committee was unearthed a few days ago. Punjab Mandi Board came to know about the embezzlement after finding a huge difference between the records of district market committee and inter-state barriers at Madhopur and Shambu regarding the supply of melons and watermelons to neighbouring states from Kapurthala district. Subsequently, mandi supervisor Bishan Singh and auction recorder Prithi Pal Singh were suspended in this regard on the directions of Punjab mandi board chairman Ajmer Singh Lakhowal. Kapurthala market committee had set up a collection naka for market fees at Shekhupur, but some of the employees deployed there reportedly committed embezzlement of several lakh of rupees in connivance with mandi supervisor and auction recorder. Market committee secretary Jaspal Singh said only Rs 3.5 lakh as market fees had been deposited during the season. On the contrary, melons and watermelons were supplied to neighbouring states in a huge number from Kapurthala district. Some more employees might be suspended within a few days after the completion of the inquiry. Meanwhile, Lakhowal said, “The collection of market fees was doubled from just Rs 345 crore to nearly Rs 700 crore during first five years of his tenure due to strict steps taken by him. His target is to further double the market fee to Rs 1,400 crore in the next three years.” |

Problems galore at Suwidha Centre
Jalandhar, July 25 The touch-screen computer kiosk to check the status of documents stopped working more than six months ago and has not been re-installed ever since. The SMS service to the applicants regarding documents ready for delivery, or more time required than mentioned in the receipt or any objection over their application, too, has been out of order for more than six months. Since the applicants do not get informed about any delay in the delivery of documents, they often end up making rounds to the centre. Septuagenarian Gurbaksh Singh, who had come pedalling all the way from Guru Nanakpura to get the learning driving licence of his grand-daughter Inderpreet Kaur, said that even as the date mentioned on the slip was of today, he could not get it. “When I asked as to why it could not be available, I was told that the files had not come from the DTO office. I was a bit furious and even told them that it was their duty to inform us on our cellphone about the delay. I even told them that if they had doubts about the availability of documents in time, they should have added two more days as waiting period. It would have at least saved our precious time and energy,” said the elderly man. Jagjit Singh, another applicant from Mallian Kalan village in Nakodar, said he had been given yesterday’s time for the receipt of arms licence. “I have come travelling at least 40 km to get the document, but to no avail. I had even called up on the phone number mentioned on the receipt before starting but there was no reply. Had I been alerted about any delay through SMS, I would have been able to save my round,” he fumed. Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Priyank Bharti said he had learnt that a software which automatically sent SMSes across had turned faulty. “I would tell the system managers to get it corrected soon,”, he said. |
Good news for mums as new maternity wing opens
Jalandhar, July 25 After years of stink and filth, expectant mothers and their relatives at the local Civil Hospital finally got to breathe fresh air today with the shifting of some of the patients of the old maternity ward in the new wing. While the new wing is only a small unit which houses the new Operation Theatre, recovery room, labour room and one or two little wards, the patients shifted to this wing beamed with happiness. Teena Rani’s mother-in-law, from a village near Kala Bakra, joked, “The previous ward stunk so bad. Ehda gharvala daur gaya (her husband ran away to escape the stench).” “This is the right place for babies to be born, we are glad we were shifted,” she said. Pardeep Kaur, an Asha worker from Singha Pind, who brought a patient with her, said, “We feel much better here. That ward made you sick even if you weren’t. The toilets here, too, are thnakfully clean.” The patient’s husband Gobinda nodded in agreement. Sarbjit Kaur from Sangh Dhesia said, “My relative got operated four days ago and we were spending a miserable time in the previous ward. But this is the exact opposite of it. It is pleasant and we are glad to get rid of the nauseating stench. The handkerchiefs are finally off our noses.” While the older maternity ward had been set up in 1975-76, its slow degeneration had turned it into one of the most unhygienic wards in the hospital. Notably, the hospital authorities had promised that patients would be shifted to the new ward after there was a recent outcry among patients owing to the pathetic hygiene and poor facilities in the older maternity ward. One of the patient’s relatives, staff had claimed, had even tried to break open the locks to this wing sick of the state in which the patient was kept. However, the present arrangement, too, is just a temporary exercise to give some patients a better place to stay in. The present wing is yet to be inaugurated and also needs some additions like ACs, beds and equipment in some of the rooms. With an average birth rate of 20 patients per day, the maternity ward ideally needs to be least 90 bedded. The staff said, the present wing, with only 20 beds at present, will just serve the purpose of a waiting and recovery room for patients, while a majority of the recovered cases will be housed in the general ward. Currently, only about eight to 10 patients have been shifted to the new ward, while three were still in the old maternity ward that wore a deserted look today and many others in the old ward opposite it. The hospital authorities are finally planning a 100-bedded Maternal and Child Healthcare (MCH) unit, which will be fully equipped to deal with maternal and child health related patients. While proposal for this new ward has been sent, it will still be some time before the work on the ward starts. For the time being, the new labour and recovery wing is the brightest stench-free hope for expectant mothers. Great relief
The shifted patients say the new ward is like heaven. The yet-to-be-inaugurated wing houses the new operation theatre, recovery room, labour room and one or two little (five to eight bedded) wards |
Acute water shortage in Tagore Nagar locality
Jalandhar, July 25 The residents blamed the MC officials for inaction and said that a team of officials paid a visit to their locality the morning, but returned without addressing their problem. “Many of us wanted to meet the MC team, but it just came and went. It was as if they were least bothered about our problem. We don’t know whether they would be doing something or not,” the residents said. It has been more than two months since the residents had been making rounds of the MC office to get a proper supply of potable water, but to no avail. Earlier yesterday, irate residents had handed over a memorandum to the MC commissioner, following which they were assured of an immediate action. The residents had also threatened the MC officials that if the water supply was not restored immediately, they would be forced to stage a dharna at the busy football chowk in the city. “The problem is that despite assurances, the MC has failed to connect the water connection of our street with another tubewell, which would ensure proper water supply,” said Nirmala Devi. Another resident, Ratan Lal said the MC had assured them to connect the water supply pipe with a new 5-foot water pipe, but nothing had materialised as of now. “Both the commissioner as well as mayor had agreed to provide a new water supply pipe so as to address our problem, but till date, we are facing acute water shortage in our locality,” he added. The residents maintained that following acute water shortage, their routine life was suffering. “It is difficult to carry out routine chores, while the sultry weather has also been adding to our problems. We just hope that the MC officials come to our aid, else we would be forced to stage a massive protest in the city,” they maintained. Meanwhile, despite repeated attempts, Executive Engineer Harwinder Kumar was not available for comments. |
Mystery shrouds woman’s death
Jalandhar, July 25 The deceased was identified as Parkasho (65). She was living along with her daughter and son-in-law. Though the police termed it a hit and run case and registered a case under Section 304 A (causing death by negligence) of the IPC, the deceased’s daughter contradicted the police claims and alleged that her mother was murdered after being robbed of cash and gold earrings. “When my mother left the house, she was carrying Rs 1,000 and wearing gold earrings. But when I saw her body, the cash and earrings were missing. She must have been murdered after being looted of valuables,” she claimed to the media. However, Ravinder Pal Singh Sandhu, Assistant Commissioner of Police (West), who reached the spot, said the preliminary police investigation revealed that she was hit by some unidentified speeding vehicle. Asked about the claims of the deceased’s daughter, the ACP said the police had registered a case of negligent driving only after taking the statement of deceased’s son-in-law Sunny. “If the deceased’s kin suspect murder, the police will investigate the case from various angles to bring out the truth,” the ACP added. |

Power cuts on, inverter sale goes up
Jalandhar, July 25 The traders dealing in inverters and batteries said the last two years saw low business on account of no power cut. “Thankfully this year, we have had 10 times more sale. It definitely is due to more power cuts”, said Kapil Sharma, who owns an inverter-battery shop at Shastri Chowk. Gautam, another businessman in the same trade, said, “We are getting so much orders that at times we are not able to cope up with the demand. The supply from factories is slower in comparison with the higher demand.” Harkishan Bawa, who owns a showroom at Alaska Chowk, said, “Since cuts are so long and frequent, some households are installing double sets of inverters. Demand is certainly at all time high”. GS Bakshi, who too has his shop at Shastri Chowk, said, “We have had good sales, but we have had lot many complaining customers as well. They buy items one day and come running the next day screaming that the inverter stopped working after four hours and they wanted to return the inverter. We then have to spend much time convincing that the batteries were not getting properly charged due to erratic power and were not able to perform.” |
Don’t want CCTV cameras: Teachers
Jalandhar, July 25 Submitting a demand letter to the Education Minister through the DEO, the teachers demanded that the “politicisation” of transfers in the education department be stopped and permanent rules be made in this regard. Reacting sharply to the recent announcement regarding the installation of the CCTVs in schools, the teachers said the move would be a violation of their freedom. They demanded that the condition of two years be removed for newly recruited teachers and they be given the right to be transferred. They also demanded that all teachers working under plan/non-plan, including NABARD, RMSA, SSA and ICT teachers be given budget, sections and DD powers. Condemning the recent announcement regarding the installation of CCTV cameras in schools, they said the move was an attack on the freedom of teachers in schools and doubts the intentions of teachers. They also demanded two science and math posts, each, in middle schools. They said if the government did not accept their demands soon, they would intensify their agitation. |
