New Delhi, July 25
A 16-year-old boy died today when his head accidentally hit an electric pole while he was buying ice cream from inside his school bus. The incident happened in Punjabi Bagh. The boy, Jaskiran, studied in Class X at Hansraj Model School in Punjabi Bagh. His father Pinto Chawla is the owner of restaurant Chawla Chicken, also in Punjabi Bagh.

Around 2.40 pm, Jaskiran was returning home from school in his school bus. He was sitting on the last seat of the bus. According to the police, he had pushed half his body outside the window on the right side of the bus to buy ice cream from a vendor. It was then that bus driver Raju, who was apparently not aware that Jaskiran was leaning outside the bus, drove the vehicle and Jaskiran's head hit an electric pole.

According to eyewitnesses, after hitting the pole, Jaskiran became unconscious, but the bus plied around 100 metres further.

Raju stopped the bus only after people around shouted. On learning about the accident, he tried to escape, but was overpowered by people on the spot and handed over to the police.

A police control room vehicle rushed Jaskiran to Maharaja Agrasen Hospital, but doctors declared him dead.

A case of causing death by negligence and rash driving has been registered against Raju at the Punjabi Bagh police station.

Meanwhile, principal of Hansraj Model School Reeta Rajan Kumar tried to pass the buck by claiming that the bus did not belong to the school.

"The school had hired the vehicle on contract. We will lodge a police complaint against the bus owner," she told reporters.

Anna supporters want SIT to nail corrupt politicos

New Delhi, July 25
The same leader Anna Hazare and his anti-corruption movement were back at Parliament Street today though the team's focus this time shifted more towards an SIT probe against the tainted MPs sitting at the helm of the UPA-led government.

People could be seen gathering from the distant parts of the country, including UP, Haryana, Uttarakhand, etc, to express solidarity to the cause of battling against a corrupt system through an effective Lokpal Bill.

From Haryana's Bhiwani district, a group of 51 people had come to support the mass leader-the second Jai Prakash Narayan to many-led by Attar Lal Thakur, chairperson of Bharatiya Rajput Sabha.

"We are here to support Annaji's agitation. Corruption is a threat and to retain the Independence, it is important to fight these corrupt bureaucrats and autocratic government. This movement is bound to succeed," said Attar who during his student days had participated in the JP Narayan movement.

Some such as S. Lal from Bijnaur's Chandpur (UP) felt that the government needed to take lessons on governance from the nation's face Anna.

"I have come to participate in this protest, which is the first step towards eradicating corruption. The government should follow the advice of Annaji or else it has to go. All corrupt politicians should be probed by SIT," said Lal, holding a Tricolour while waiting for Anna to reach the venue.

It was around noon that the 74-year-old Gandhian arrived at the protest venue where his supporters were seen waving Tricolours as the mass leader raised slogans with the same gusto, "Inquilab Zindabad" and "Bharat Mata Ki Jai", even as he addressed the gathering in the evening.

There were several organisations and trade unions such as the Hind Mazdoor Sabha-affiliated Eastern Medikit Employees' Trade Union which had come to support the Gandhian-led agitation.

"We are tired of corruption and we are here to support Anna. We have not received our salaries for three months even as we are the permanent employees working for nearly 20 years in the company. But now when it was the time of renewal of the agreement, the management and the owner Karun Raj Narang left the place," said Radheshyam, who was accompanied by around 1,000 workers of the Gurgaon-based company.

Hitting at the government and the political parties, Anna's core committee members said, "These people are from the Dalit and other backward classes who have come to join the movement on their own and not brought by any political party. Bribery is entrenched in the country's whole system with the common man ending up paying for almost everything--starting from the birth registration, admissions, medical treatment to the driving licence. This fight against corruption will continue."

Man’s son, wife held for his murder
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, July 25
A 22-year-old man was arrested today for allegedly murdering his father in a fit of rage, the police said. The murder took place yesterday in Hazrat Nizamuddin. Danish, alias Naeem, killed his father because he used to ill-treat his mother, Naima, alias Maimo (45). Naima has also been arrested for conspiring to save Danish.

The victim, whose name has not been revealed by the police, was reportedly a smack addict.

"After killing his father, Danish placed his body in a room of his house. Meanwhile, his mother and sister returned home at 5 pm. Naima sent her daughter to call her grandmother, who is residing in the same locality. Naima told Danish to leave and said that she would clean the bloodied spot and concoct a story to save him," said Additional Commissioner of Police (south-east district) Ajay Chaudhry.

Yesterday at 5.45 pm, the police reached the spot and found the body with a deep cut on the neck and multiple stabs on the back. The police suspected an insider's involvement in the murder, because a wiper was used to clean the bloodied floor.

The police investigated Naima, her youngest son and daughter. Naima said that Danish was outside in search of a job. She said that she had mopped the floors of the two rooms, where the murder occurred and the place where the body was kept. The police doubted her statement.

She alleged that her brother-in-law Zahiruddin had murdered her husband, because they had a property dispute.

Zahiruddin said after the murder, Naima told him to come over and see what had happened to her husband. When he reached the spot, he saw his brother's body lying in a pool of blood. He called the police. "Meanwhile, Naima started saying that Zahiruddin had killed her husband," added Chaudhry.

Zahiruddin said that he saw Danish leaving the house in a hurry at 5 pm. It is also learnt that Danish had switched off his mobile phone.

Danish was arrested from the Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station while he was attempting to flee Delhi.

He said that his father had been a smack addict for the past 20 years and suffering from tuberculosis. He often abused Naima and also cast aspersions on her character, which upset Danish and made him angry.

Yesterday afternoon, while Danish and his father were having lunch, the latter again abused Naima. According to Chaudhry, Danish lost his temper and grabbed a sharp-edged object. He tried to stab his father.

"But his father snatched the object and thrust it in Danish's thigh. Danish then grabbed a butcher's knife and cut his father's throat," said Chaudhry.

Lokayukta wants original cabinet letter on illegal colonies

Tribune News Service

New Delhi, July 25
The Delhi Lokayukta issued notice yesterday to the Principal Secretary, Urban Development, to appear before it within 10 days with the original letter of the cabinet that was passed about the construction of roads in unauthorised colonies, failing which penal proceedings would be initiated.

The Lokayukta said that earlier a notice had been served through a special messenger on July 13 on a matter of tampering with the cabinet decision, asking the Principal Secretary to produce the original letter. However, he failed to produce the letter.

The Lokayukta said that it was not understandable that the letter of cabinet which had given permission for the construction of roads and drains in unauthorized colonies in the assembly constituency Mahipalpur was not traceable.

The letter had been sent to the MLA, Minister of Urban Development, Principal Secretary (UD) as well as the Special Secretary (UD).

The letter should be produced forthwith along with the original records of the allotment of works, the Lokaykta directed.

The Lokayukta also said that it should be clarified whether the permission for construction of roads and drains had been duly approved by the minister concerned or not and the noting in original should be produced as well.

The Lokayukta said that instead of the Principal Secretary, the department concerned had sent Deputy Secretary Dharam Pal Sharma and Superintendent Nagesh Kumar who told him that the original letter of the cabinet was not traceable and the efforts were on to trace the letter.

New Delhi, July 25

Yesterday, the police was tipped-off that Singh was searching for a prospective buyer for the two antique idols. They learnt that he would arrive at the ISKCON temple.

The police arrested Singh from the parking lot of the temple at 8 am.

"A khaki cloth bag containing the two idols was seized from him. He could not provide a reason for possessing the antique articles. He was thereafter arrested," said another senior official.

A case under relevant sections of the Antiquities and Art Treasures Act and the Indian Penal Code was registered against Singh at the Amar Colony police station.

The police will take the help of experts from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to learn more about the idols. The database of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) are being checked to ascertain the source of the idols.
