19-yr-old girl electrocuted
Panchkula, July 25
A 19-year-old girl was electrocuted on Tuesday night when she came in contact with a live wire outside her residence in Panchkula. The deceased has been identified as Neelu, a resident of Sector 27, Panchkula.

Couple robbed of car at gunpoint

In yet another case of car jacking in Panchkula, a Verna car was snatched at gunpoint from an elderly couple by three unidentified youths on the road separating Sectors 25 and 26 late on Wednesday night.

If you have white Maruti 800 car, don't take it to 'apni mandi' in Sector 16 on Tuesday. As many as 20 Maruti cars, all white in colour, have been stolen from the parking lot of the 'apni mandi'.

Parliamentary committee reaches city today

The working of the Chandigarh Administration and that of the Municipal Corporation would be under scanner as the Parliamentary Committee is coming to the city tomorrow and would discuss the number of issues with the officials of UT Administration, Municipal Corporation and political leaders.

70 challaned at Motor Market
Chandigarh, July 25
As many as 70 challans were issued to the encroachers at the Motor Market in Sector 48 by the enforcement wing of the Municipal Corporation during an encroachment drive today. The enforcement team removed and impounded 50 cars which were being repaired and parked on the MC land.

Suspended clerks intensify protest

Former Vice Chancellor of Panjab University Dr KN Pathak has been appointed as mentor and performance auditor of five institutions located in Punjab, UP, West Bengal and Himachal Pradesh. A communication to this effect has been received from the National Project Implementation Unit (NPIU), Government of India.

26 conferred degrees at first convocation of IISER

The Right to Education would be implemented across the country by March 2013, said Kapil Sibal, Minister for Human Resource Development, today. Sibal was in the town to attend the first convocation of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) as the chief guest.

SOPU ends agitation

Student Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU) ended their hunger strike today after their demands were met. SOPU members had started an indefinite hunger strike on July 24. The students were demanding that the university should reduce the eligibility for the promotion of BSc students to MSc.

2 booked to rob woman
Kalka, July 25
Two miscreants robbed a 65-year-old woman of her gold ornaments today. Police sources revealed that the victim, Satya Devi, a resident of Saini Mohalla, Pinjore, had come to take medicine from the primary health centre (PHC), Pinjore. The incident took place at around 2.30 pm when she came out of the centre.

1 killed in road mishap
Ambala, July 25
A woman died when the car in which she was travelling skidded and fell into a ditch on the Ambala-Hisar road near Ismilabad village this morning. According to information, the deceased, identified as Santosh, was visiting a pilgrimage in Rajasthan with her husband Ramesh Kumar and three children.

A man died after felling off the fourth floor of a flat near Banur last evening. The deceased was identified as 36-year-old Mohammad Aftab, a resident of Bhagalpur district, Bihar.

Ex-liquidator convicted
Chandigarh, July 25
The CBI Court today convicted a former liquidator of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Ashish Vajpayee, in a disproportionate assets case. The accused, who was attached with the Punjab and Haryana High Court at the time of his arrest, has been held guilty of amassing assets (worth Rs 1.47 crore) disproportionate to his known sources of income in 2006 during his tenure.

Rapping the Chandigarh Administration on its knuckles for red-tapism in renting out the shops in the “modern air-conditioned fish, meat and poultry products market”, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has set a two-week deadline for the authorities concerned to take a decision. The market was constructed some three years ago.

Unable to reconcile herself to the loss of her younger brother, who had committed suicide, a 19-year-old girl allegedly kills herself by hanging herself at her residence in Ram Darbar here this afternoon.

In yet another case of eve-teasing, a woman constable posted near the Railway light point reported that some rowdy youngsters passed comments on her while she was on duty last night. The police reached the spot but the accused had fled by that time.

2 robbers arrested
Mohali, July 25
The police arrested two robbers who robbed of a local resident at a knifepoint this afternoon. The accused, identified as Charanjit Singh from Dhala village in Mukerian, and Deepak Kumar of Badh Majra, Mohali district, robbed of Deepu, a resident of a colony in Sector 50, Chandigarh, of Rs 2,100 at the knifepoint near the Neighbourhood Park in Phase XI at around 2.30 pm today.

A 30-year-old man was arrested by the Panchkula police who was reportedly giving fake evidence in the Panchkula court this morning. The accused, identified as Jagjit Singh, is a resident of Ambala.

Class X student ends life
Panchkula, July 25
A student of Class X reportedly committed suicide at his residence in Haripur village, Sector 4, Panchkula, by hanging himself from a ceiling fan on Wednesday night. The deceased, Lovely, was rushed to the Sector 6 General Hospital where he was declared brought dead.

Education dept seals GMSSS-19 cricket ground

The 30-year-old cricket hub of City Beautiful, the Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19, is facing the ire of the UT Education department. The authorities appear to have suddenly woken up to the fact that the cricket academy is running without ‘permission’ from past three decades and ordered cricket enthusiast to vacate the ground till a final decision is taken ion the issue.
