Jalandhar, July 20
Countless cases, two deaths and almost a month after diarrhoea and other water-borne diseases first started spreading their tentacles across the district, the Municipal Corporation finally woke up to the threat of illegal water connections in the city today.

The MC today announced a crackdown on illegal connection holders across the city.

A team comprising Deputy Commissioner Priyank Bharti, Municipal Commissioner Vinay Bublani and Civil Surgeon Dr RL Bassan visited the Manjit Nagar, Lahauriyan Mohalla and Darjiyan Mohalla areas today and took stock of the patients.

On the instructions of the DC, MC teams checked the water connections in the area. Eight domestic connections were found to be causing contamination (in the drinking water supply) in the area.

Talking to The Tribune, MC Commissioner Vinay Bublani said, “A public notice will be issued across the city that offenders who have set up illegal connections, get these checked and fixed. Strict action will be taken against those who don’t comply.”

“As far as the Manjit Nagar and adjoining areas are concerned, the eight faulty connections identified there will be fixed by MC teams. People make holes in the main pipes to set up illegal connections, which later lead to contamination. Although water being supplied from the tube well in the area is clean, the problem is being caused due to these illegal or broken domestic pipes,” Bublani added.

Unfortunately, the move by the MC comes almost a month after the first diarrhoea case (due to contaminated water) was diagnosed. Strict action taken earlier might have prevented the two deaths in the city.

Regarding the water samples taken by the MC in the Manjit Nagar and adjoining areas, Bublani said they had been found to be clean.

9 more diarrhoea patients in district

Diarrhoea cases continued to pour in from the Basti Gujan and other areas of the district for another day today.

A total of nine patients were diagnosed with diarrhoea across the district today.

Civil Surgeon RL Bassan said health teams visited 220 houses in the Manjit Nagar, Lahauriyan Mohalla, Darjiyan Mohalla and Dharampura areas today, where two diarrhoea and two fever patients were found. As many as 4,000 chlorine tablets were distributed in the said area.

Three patients were also diagnosed with diarrhoea in the medical camp at Manjit Nagar, where a total of 45 patients were checked today.

In the gali no. 3 of the Bhargo Camp area, 144 houses were visited, 3,000 chlorine tablets were distributed. In the area, four patients were diagnosed to be suffering from diarrhoea and one from vomiting. Two water samples were also taken in the area.

BTE doses were also sprayed at the sewage ponds of the Noorpur and Nangal areas by health teams today.

Sugar traders go on strike
5 pc levy and 10 pc surcharge on the commodity
Nikhil Bhardwaj

Jalandhar, July 20
Expressing resentment over the state government’s decision to impose 5 per cent levy and 10 per cent surcharge on sugar, the local wholesale sugar traders today observed a full-day strike and also threatened to go on an indefinite strike if the government did not roll back its decision with immediate effect.

“The government’s decision will punch a hole in the common man’s pocket and will also give fillip to hoarding. Today’s complete bandh by city wholesalers itself gives a clear-cut message to the government to take back its decision, otherwise we will go on an indefinite strike and the state government will be responsible for our move,” Pritam Singh Arora, president of the Jalandhar Wholesale Sugar Dealers Association, said while addressing the city wholesale sugar dealers.

He held that levying extra taxes on sugar means putting an additional burden of Rs 200 or Rs 300 after every quintal on customers.

“A few days ago, sugar was being sold at about Rs 33 per kg and now with the government’s decision, the price of sugar has already gone up to about Rs 38 or Rs 39.” He rued that the government had completely backtracked from its poll promises to stand for the interest of the common man.

Despite the government’s surplus sugar stock, it was taking an illogical decision to break the backbone of the common man, who was already reeling under inflation.

If the government did not pay heed to their demands, the sugar wholesale traders of every district would hold a state-level meeting to decide their further agenda of launching protest against the government, he revealed.

Interestingly, sources said the announcement of levying VAT on sugar had already alerted local retailers, who had started piling up sugar stocks with the hope to earn more profits in future.

Solid waste management project
MC to issue legal notice to Jindal Group

Jalandhar, July 20
Owing to the non-compliance of its deadline to start the solid waste management project from July 15, the Municipal Corporation Jalandhar is contemplating issuing a legal notice to its contractor Jindal Group.

As per the contract signed between the MC and Jindal Co, the project was to get started on July 15 with the lifting of door-to-door garbage by company employees from a few wards. A meeting for the purpose was scheduled to be held prior to that but company representatives failed to appear.

MC Commissioner Viney Bublani fixed two more meetings and even issued notices for the same to the company officials for the purpose. A notice for appearing before the Commissioner at 3 pm, too, had been issued, but no one turned up, following which the official has planned to take legal action against the company. Bublani confirmed the same.

As per the plan, the Jindal Group was to set up a compost and power generation plant for the same at Jamsher village where the MC had offered nearly 25 acres. The plant was to come up after one and a half years. Till the time, garbage collection and segregation and transportation was to be done at a dump in Wariana village.

The project has since been facing much opposition. While the safai karamcharis have been claiming that they would not allow the company staff to lift garbage and that their services should be taken for the job, as is being done presently in Ludhiana where the project has already started.

Residents of Jamsher and 10 surrounding villages are also opposing it tooth and nail, as they have been saying that their lives would become hellish with dump situated just next to the dairy complex and garbage-carrying trucks passing through the place the whole day.

His physical disability notwithstanding, this boy confidently crawled on the floor amidst the new and old students to reach the NIT campus for his admission. Even the NIT faculty was glad to have admitted him, as the boy has been eager to pursue engineering.

Chandan Kumar (17) has taken admission in the chemical engineering stream and has been looking forward to the last round of the counselling, as he might get a chance to change his stream to computer science. He scored 60.4 percent marks in class XII exams under the Bihar education board and bagged 300165 rank in the AIEEE.

A resident of a remote village in Gaya (Bihar), Chandan’s father owns a flourmill shop at their house and wanted to help their son pursue an engineering discipline. “Financial assistance was the major stumbling block, hence I preferred to appear for the AIEEE and took coaching from a local institute in Gaya. I wish to pursue research in chemical engineering or take up computer science as a career option,” he added.

Excited about this lifetime moment to study at NIT, Chandan has been given a wheel-chair to assist him. “I am yet to see and explore the huge and beautiful campus. Since it was difficult to crawl initially and cover the distances of the campus, I was given a wheel-chair,” he added.

On being asked whether it was his first-ever experience of staying alone till date, he said, “It was for the first time that I was living alone in a different city, but that was no problem. I was equipped with all necessary facilities provided by the NIT authorities. Initially, it was difficult for me, as I was left crawling on the campus but now I am ready to explore and progress.”

Chandan informed that he was around two years old when he became polio afflicted. Further financial constraints left his family without any possibilities of treatment. “My father has a big family of 10 to feed and it was difficult for us to think of any treatment. However, I am glad that I have made it to the NIT and would help my family rise,” he maintained.

Dr Rohit Mehra from the NIT admission cell said, “Chandan got admission under the OBC-cum-physically handicapped category. Further, we provided him a wheel-chair right on day one, but yesterday his brother bought a new wheel chair and we have decided to reimburse the bill. Apart from this, he has been allotted a hostel room on the ground floor so that he faces no problem at all. Even the classrooms are on the ground floor and easily accessible through ramps.”

He added that recently, a faculty member under the physically handicapped category also joined the campus. “Dr Arvind Kumar has joined the department of physics and the campus has provided him a laptop and projector so as to assist him in preparing power point presentations for the students,” he added.

Jalandhar, July 19
Cakes being ordered at children’ birthday parties have become all the more trendy, thanks to the use of digital technology by bakers here.

While the use of dolls, jungle scenes, flowers and shapes of cartoon characters like Spiderman, Ben 10 and Powerpuff girls had been a rage till recent past, the latest fad is to get any cartoon character, scenery or even a photograph scanned on a computer and use it on the top layer of the cake.

Exactly the same print gets replicated on the cake with same colours, which the bakers claim are non-toxic as well. While till the last month, only select shops were said to be preparing such cakes, these cakes, in the price range of Rs 400 to Rs 500 a kg, are now available with all leading bakery shops.

Taranjit Singh Walia, who recently celebrated the birthday of his son Gurkirat Singh, said he had got the cake made with Ben 10 printed on the top. “The children liked it so much that all of them went home, telling their parents that they, too, wanted a similar cake on their birthday. Next day, we got so many calls from parents asking as to where from we had got it made and how”, he said.

Harpal Singh, who recently celebrated the birthday of his daughter Kanu, said he got the picture of Kanu and his son Manav riding a bicycle printed on the cake. “All the kids at the party had literally gone mad when we opened the cake box. The picture had come out so well that my daughter said she did not feel like cutting the cake,” he pointed out.

Mega leather cluster
Industrialists elated over govt decision
Kusum Arora
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, July 20
The decision of the Union government to set up a Rs 125-crore mega leather cluster in the city has rekindled the hopes of the leather industrialists as it would give the much-needed boost to the industry in the region.

Union Industries and Communications Minister Anand Sharma made this announcement yesterday. The cluster would be set up by the Department of Industrial Promotion and Policy.

Industrialists are of the view that the existing leather industry with an annual turnover of Rs 700 crore will get a fillip, as the cluster will house not only new processing, tanning units but production houses too. Hence, increasing job avenues for scores of youth in this region.

Talking to Jalandhar Tribune, Lt-Col JS Paul (retd), president of the Punjab Leather Federation, said the mega leather cluster would be set up under the Indian Leather Development Programme (ILDP). “The Union government has earmarked Rs 600-crore for this project and decided to set up five mega clusters across the country, out of which one has been decided for Jalandhar,” he added.

Col Paul added that the cluster would be set up in an area of 40 acres and seven leather industrialists would together contribute the money to construct the cluster. “Under this project, 50 per cent of the expenses of the cluster, including setting up of roads, water work, sewerage, storm drains and treatment plants including the land development, would be borne by the industrialists,” he added.

“This project can be a success only if various component units of leather industry are set up according to the market demand. Earlier, the leather complex was set up, but it failed to serve the purpose, as only 50 leather units could be set up. We are yet to understand the modalities of the mega cluster but hope that it would revive the declining leather industry in this region,” he maintained.

Chief Executive Officer of Punjab Effluent Treatment Society for Tanneries Steven Klair also said that the setting up of the mega cluster would give a boost to the footwear industry and in turn provide maximum job employment to people in this region.

“We would set up the cluster near leather complex so that the existing industry is also able to make use of the facilities. Special focus would be on the production houses, which would make leather bags, purses, wallets, jackets, shoes and belts. The cluster would ensure that all the industry demands, from getting hides to tanning, processing and production would be fulfilled at one place,” he said.

The industrialists maintained that they were looking forward to complete the pending requirement of the industry through the setting up of the clusters. “We are hopeful that the recommendations made by the government for the setting up of clusters was fulfilled and implemented in toto and the industry gets a boost. The leather industry, despite having a leather complex and focal point, has been lagging behind. The Rs 125-crore investment is sure to uplift the annual turnover of the leather industry from the city,” said Raju Virk, a leather industrialist.
