9 new diarrhoea cases in Abadpura
Jalandhar, July 22
Out of these cases, the health teams claimed to have diagnosed only nine persons with diarrhoea and six with fever. The rest, they said, were gastroenteritis patients. Their version dramatically differed from the residents’ version, who claimed that there were at least 20 diarrhoea patients and nine jaundice patients in the area. Jaundice cases did not even figure in the health department reports. Jatinder Laddi (21), a resident of Abadpura, said he was suffering from jaundice for the past many days and incidentally, the medical camp was held at a spot right in front of his home. He claimed that the health teams knew about his ailment. Another patient, Amardeep (25) in the area is also said to be suffering from jaundice. Diarrhoea cases in the area included Sarabjit (23), Ramji Das, Nisha Rani, Gagandeep (23) and Dimple (16). Roshan, whose father Jeet Ram Jassal died yesterday, said his sister Priya and daughter Jasmine were also down with diarrhoea. “Our front-door and next-door neighbours, too, are suffering from diarrhoea,” he said. Local leaders working in the area confirmed that there were more than 25 diarrhoea and nine jaundice patients in the area. No cases were reported from the Manjit Nagar and Bhargo Camp areas today. A team comprising Local Bodies Minister Bhagat Chunni Lal, Mayor Rakesh Rathour and Municipal Commissioner Vinay Bublani also visited the affected area of Abadpura today and interacted with affected families. Although they made no formal announcements in terms of compensation, residents expressed a demand in this regard and were assured by the authorities that the needful would be done. Death toll four, no compensation so far
With the surfacing of another patient who had died of diarrhoea in Abadpura on Tuesday, the toll of diarrhoea patients in the city has risen to four. The patient Harbhajan Lal (55) died on July 13. Harbhajan Lal’s case only came to light as the outbreak spread. He was the first one to fall prey to the infection in the area. A security guard, Lal is survived by his son Yashpal (27), daughter Parvinder (22), mother Preetam Kaur and wife Gurbaksh Kaur. Harbhajan Lal was the sole bread-earner of the family. His daughter said her brother pursues a course and she also studies, BUT currently their family has no financial support system. Area residents today also demanded that families of rickshaw-puller Ravi Kumar be provided monetary assistance. Ravi, whose daughter Nisha has been suffering from diarrhoea, is a rickshaw-puller, while his wife irons clothes. Resident Bobby Mahi said Ravi often doesn’t have enough money to pay his house bills. His daughter has been admitted to a private hospital. “As the government hospital is too far away, we first took her to a private hospital , which rejected her, saying it’s too serious a case. She’s now in another hospital,” Ravi said. Deputy Commissioner Priyank Bharti, on the matter of compensation, said, “In two of the cases, it hasn’t even been established whether it was diarrhoea. In the rest, families of the deceased are welcome to make compensation claims and we will duly address their requests.” |
Lab report confirms beef seizure
Jalandhar, July 22 Bimal Kant Sharma, inspector, Police Division No. 8, said on May 24, the police had arrested three persons, including two West Bengal residents, in an alleged case of cow slaughter and recovered 205 kg of beef from their possession. The arrested accused were identified as Khan and Azijul, both hailing from West Bengal, and Babu Ram, a resident of Basti Chungi in Ferozepur, the SHO said. They were carrying the bags containing beef while they were on their way from Ferozepur to Jalandhar. After the recovery of the meat, the veterinary doctors’ team, led by senior veterinary doctor JK Chopra, had also visited the police station and inspected the beef. The veterinary doctors had then also taken samples of the beef and subsequently sent these to the Mathura-based veterinary laboratory for examination. During the preliminary examination, veterinary experts had found that the meat being carried by the trio was beef. Even during interrogation, the accused had also admitted that they were into this illegal trade for quite some time. The beef that they had smuggled from Ferozepur was to be sold on a retail basis at Kazi Mandi, a hub of drug peddlers, in Jalandhar.aA case under Sections 3, 5 and 8 of the Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act, 1955, had been registered against the accused. |
Kashyap Naujawan Dharmik Sabha honours Kargil heroes’ families
Jalandhar, July 22 Ahead of the 13th Kargil war anniversary, city-based organisation the Kashyap Naujawan Dharmik Sabha today gathered to honour the families of the war heroes during the honour-cum-remembrance ceremony. The family members of the martyrs, who had gathered from across the district, applauded the sabha members for holding a function in their memory. They were honoured with the pictures of their sons and shawls. Recalling the sacrifices of their brave sons, most of those present cried while narrating various incidents. Among those honoured was Sudarshan Khindria, whose son Lt Sachin Khindria was killed at CHL Glacier- Amar post in an encounter with the enemy on October 31, 1998, during the Kargil conflict. The officer was awarded the Sena Medal posthumously on December 15, 1999. A visibly sad Sudarshan Khindria donated Rs 10,000 to the sabha members for their initiative for remembering the martyrs on this day. He declared financial assistance of Rs 10,000 from his family every year and said, “We are overwhelmed with the gesture of this sabha, which has been relentlessly working to honour the martyrs’ families.” Another proud father who was honoured on this occasion was Lt-Col JS Garcha (retd) whose son Capt Roopendra Singh Garcha was killed fighting militants near Lakirpur village in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir. Capt Garcha was from 323 AD Regiment under Headquarters 2 Sector Rashtriya Rifles. Though Col Garcha could not make it to the function, he maintained that he had been regularly coming to the place for the past around five years. “Surprisingly, there is no other organisation, government department or NGO, which ever held a function to recognise the valour and sacrifice of the martyrs. We are glad to have been associated with them and wish them good for its future efforts. The sabha started this honour function with a little means and today it has gathered support from many like-minded people and bodies,” he added. On this occasion, 12 martyrs’ families were honoured, which included Major Kanwar Gulzar Singh, Lt Sachin Khindria, Capt Roopendra Garcha, Sapper Daljit Singh, Capt Gurwinder Singh, Rifleman Nastinder Pal, Major Kapil Vinayak, Captain Satnam Singh, Capt Raman Dada, Head constable Lakhbir Singh, Capt Mohinder Singh and Sharda Ram. Pawan Kumar, president of the sabha, said, “This year we had decided to invite the families of Capt Amol Kalia and Capt Vikram Batra also, but their families were already busy with other functions, so they could not come.” He also added that by holding such a function every year, the sabha wished to make the present generations, especially the youth and the children, aware of the sacrifices made by these heroes. The sabha members distributed school bags and uniforms free of cost to the needy students of different schools in the city. “We also pay school fees of selected academically good students, so that nobody leaves education due to financial constraints,” a sabha member said. Sepoy Katoch’s kin honoured
Late Sepoy Karam Chand Katoch from the 4 Dogra Regiment, who laid down his life during the 1962 Sino-Indian war, died a hero’s death. His heroism hogged limelight after 48 years, when his body was recovered by the Border Task Force in the year 2010 in Arunachal Pradesh. Today, when his nephew Jaswant Singh Katoch and his wife Anjana Katoch visited Jalandhar for the function, it was a solemn occasion to honour them. The sabha members honoured the duo with shawl and a picture of Sepoy Karam Chand. Jaswant Singh said, “The mortal remains of my uncle were brought to his native village Ajogar in Palampur and the cremation was done on July 15, 2010. His entire family had no clue of his whereabouts, as we could not even see his body.” A contingent from the 4 Dogra from Siliguri (West Bengal) had come to Palampur to hand over the body to us. “He was cremated with full state honours. The Himachal Pradesh Government has named a block in a government primary school after him, while the construction of a gate is still underway,” he added. However, he lamented that the Himachal Pradesh Government had failed to construct a museum in his memory at Ajogar village. “We wanted that his belongings should be kept as a remembrance, so that not only the village, but the entire nation learnt about his heroic deeds and valour,” he maintained. On the function organised by the sabha, he said, “We were invited by the sabha last year too, but could not come. However, this time we assured them that we would come. We are glad that they honour the martyrs every year,”he added. |

Commuters face chaos outside educational institutes
Bipin Bhardwaj Tribune News Service
Jalandhar, July 22 These educational institutions - Lyallpur Khalsa College for Women, St Josef Convent School and Seventh Day Adventist School - are proving a major traffic bottleneck here. Though the traffic wing of the city police claims to have organised lectures in different schools, including those situated on this road, to educate the students about rules of the road, this seems to be a futile exercise. The problem of traffic congestion on this particular stretch is acute during the school hours, as students coming in school buses, auto-rickshaws, rickshaws, bicycles and by other means of transportation, besides parents dropping their wards in luxurious vehicles, create traffic chaos. Jalandhar Cantonment area and other village residents apart from the defence authorities have taken up the issue with the city police many times, but to no avail, claimed Ramandeep Singh, a Jalandhar Cantonment resident. Area residents have demanded the regularisation of vehicles and action against the educational institutions for creating public inconvenience at the place. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sukhdev Singh, however, said that a plan was being mooted to regulate vehicular traffic in the area. |
Sufi body gives call to deras to take the righteous path
Jalandhar, July 22 Barely days after a call from the Sufi Shrine of Laal Badshah in Nakodar saw intellectuals congregating to offer Sufi solutions to Punjab's typical problem, another organisation reiterated the message from the saints on Friday. An organisation --- World Sufi Saints Association --- gave a call to 'deras' and 'shrines' across Punjab exhorting various dears to step out of the confines of their shrines, and spread the message of a progressive and secular Punjab. The president of the organisation Dr Daljit Sodhi said, "I have been following deras for a long time and I have felt that 'deras' are as much about inspiring a constrictive society as about beliefs in religions and saints. Fundamentalism and social ills are misleading the masses." The organisation exhorted all deras in the state to discourage the ills of drugs and female foeticide among their followers and the public at large. They said they will take the message of Punjab's legendary saints Baba Farid and Baba Bulle Shah among people. While 260 deras have already planned to support the organisation, their path has had its own challenges. They have also antagonised 200 deras of the state in the process. The organisation has also chosen Hans Raj Hans the chief of the Lal Badshaah Shrine as their patron. Dr Sodhi said, “I met Hans Raj Hans and his views on the role of dears and Sufism in Punjab are very similar. Like us, he also believes that a place with green flags doesn't necessarily have to be a den for smokers and drinkers. He is a popular singer and ideologue and believes in the deep Sufi message and wisdom. His voice would matter for the masses." Dr Sodhi made it clear that that it was his wisdom and Sufi inclinations and not his political status that made the organisation approach him. Hans chosen chief

Travel agent arrested after 7 years
Jalandhar, July 22 The victim, Binder Singh of Kala Sanghia village, had complained to the police that in 2005, he met the said travel agent, who promised to send him to Greece and a deal was struck at Rs 3.60 lakh. “Instead of sending me to Greece, I was sent to Jordan by the agent. When I landed in the country, I realised that the agent had cheated me. After coming back to India, I complained against the agent at Police Division No. 6 and now after seven years, the accused was nabbed by the police,” the victim alleged. Acting on the tip-off, the police arrested the accused from his residence on Saturday evening, while his brother Yashpal is still absconding. |
1,133 teaching fellows demand appointment letters
Jalandhar, July 22 In September, 2007, 9,998 posts of teaching fellow were advertised by the Punjab Government. As many as 1,133 posts out of these still lie vacant even after five years of the government advertisement. Speaking on the occasion, Sharanjit Kaur, convener of the union, said while the 1,133 teachers had been sitting unemployed for the past five years, thousands of schoolchildren had also been robbed of their right to education. Notably, while the counselling of all these teachers took place on December 13, 2011, some court cases pending against 467 of these teachers have held up their recruitment. But the rest of the 666 teachers say the government has also held up their recruitments even though they had been cleared for the posts and are qualified for the jobs on the pretext of court cases pending against the other 467 teachers. The teachers demanded that their appointment letters be issued immediately by the government, failing which they would launch an agitation. |
