ward no 32
MC POLLS GS Paul Tribune News Service
Amritsar, May 19 While a major part of the drain has been covered, this portion was left uncovered. The residents say the covering up of the drain was on the agenda of civic authorities but it was curtailed by some SAD leaders who said it will hamper the functioning of century-old Hansli (an idea conceptualised to drag the canal water during the Maharaja Ranjit Singh era which feeds the holy tank even today). Other areas in this ward are Partap Nagar, New Partap Nagar, New Azad Nagar, Sant Vihar, Partap Avenue, Sant Avenue, Inderjeet Colony, Maqboolpura (from street number 1-9). Lack of water supply is the major problem faced by the residents here, especially the areas falling in Maqboolpura belt and a portion of Partap Avenue, where, incidentally, the area councilor lives as well. The residents here have no choice but to use submersible motors to pump the water up. At Maqboolpura, the residents live in the most unhygienic conditions. In the absence of sewerage disposal, dirty water keeps accumulating on the entrance of their houses. Garbage keeps piling up in their streets. Another problem is of ‘kutcha streets’ leading to residential areas. Barring the main roads connecting the GT road, all the internal roads here are made up of bricks. Residents complain that during rain, these bricks become lose and potholes appear. Why is the drain in your area not covered? It is necessary to cover it up. Our area remained neglected for a long time. The area has had SAD councillors getting elected from here in the past, yet development could not be done because it was the It will be our priority to get it covered up as the local MLA belongs to our alliance partner. I have got the earlier contract scrapped by declaring the present contractor blacklisted. New contractor will be engaged soon. What about scarcity and unsafe drinking water and sewerage system? It is not true. These problems existed earlier. When was I elected from here, the first thing I did was to install two tubewells to regularise the water supply. Some areas might be left out, but it will be taken care of on a priority basis. Barring Sant Vihar, all the areas have been equipped with sewerage line. With your wife as candidate, what will be your agenda? It’s development. Covering up of drain, safe drinking water, sewerage line for left out areas and streetlights will be the priority. Projects worth Rs 1.18 crore are underway. Profile Councillor Shamsher Singh Shera
Politics is in his blood courtesy his uncle Jathedaar Suba Singh Dabwali, who remained the SGPC executive member for 29 terms. Born in 1967, Shamsher Singh shifted to Amritsar in 2000 and became circle president of Kot Baba Deep Singh in 2004 and later became the senior vice-president of the SAD, Amritsar. He fought civic elections for the first time in 2007 and won. Now that this ward has been declared as reserved for women candidates, he will field his wife Ranjit Kaur from the SAD. Residents speak The Akalis objected to covering up of the drain because they thought to preserve it for its historic significance. Did they ever think of the unhygienic conditions we are living in? Look at their logic of boasting about the ‘so called development works’. — Charanjit Singh, maqboolpura Sewage collects at the entrance of our houses. The councillors come to our street only at the time of elections to show some concern. Except for false promises, no one has ever bothered to redress our grievances. — Baljit Kaur, gali no 1 I have not seen my councillor’s face for the past five years. It is an irony that we do not have direct water supply in our taps for past many years. It is only the submersible motor on which we rely for water supply, which is also not safe for drinking. — Jaswinder Singh, partap avenue The water and sewerage facilities in our area are reasonably good but our streets need to be paved. It is difficult to reach our houses during rainy season. The councillor has promised us to get it done, but to no avail. — Gurdeep Singh, new partap nagar |

Two petrol pumps pass the muster, NGO finds no lapses
Amritsar, May 19 This was revealed during an awareness campaign conducted by the volunteers of the Amritsar chapter of India Against Corruption (IAC). Even as the report card of three fuel pumps, two located on the Court Road and one on the GT Road was a 100 per cent, yet it does not imply that everything was in order. The team started their campaign at a petrol pump on the Court Road. Here, the team found that the petrol dispensing machine was not accepting the feed in terms of quantity. Parbodh Bali, spokesperson of IAC, said except for the absence of calibrations, nothing objectionable was found at these petrol stations. He said no lapses were detected from the tests conducted with filter paper. “The five litre can, which should always be present to measure if asked by any consumer, did not have the mandatory seal of the weight and measures department at these stations. Similarly, the machines were not accepting command, if the volume of the fuel required was fed in. Nevertheless, the machines were being operated only when the quantity of money was punched in. In general, nothing objectionable was found. The machines were dispensing some excess units of petrol instead,” he said. DS Calcutta said the IAC wants make people aware of their rights and to ensure the quality and quantity of petrol and diesel being disposed by various outlets. “The IAC is dedicated to the cause of eradicating corruption. Checking of petrol pumps was to draw the attention of the people towards their right to check the quantity and quality of fuel they are pay for,” he said. |
