MC POLLS
WARD WATCH, ward no 27

Councillor’s report card good, but not 100%
Neeraj Bagga
Tribune News Service

Amritsar, May 17
The young BJP councillor from Ward number 27, Rajesh Kumar Honey, won the hearts of the voters by providing clean and concrete roads, efficient garbage lifting system and installation of streetlights. For him the problem areas are in delay in the construction of the elevated road and the problems related to it.

The stretch of the GT Road from Hussainpura to Sharifpura is one of the busiest roads in the city. Since the bus stand is located on the opposite side of the road, buses, autos and rickshaws are parked here leading to chaos.

This stretch of the road needs repair. It has been in such condition since the construction of the elevated road began five years ago. Heavy flow of traffic on the broken down road causes flow of dust to nearby houses and shops. Dust due to the traffic and here leads to health problems for residents and shopkeepers especially the elderly. However, the same patch of land turns into a puddle of water even after a drizzle.

The ward comprises Hussainpura, Sharifpura and Tehsilpura, the three localities that were established much before Partition. Many residents complain against people urinating behind the pillars of the elevated road here.

Meanwhile, the residents appreciate the area councillor for his accessibility, empathetic attitude, installation of streetlights and ending the problem of frequent chocking of sewer pipes.

Councillor speak

What are your achievements?

In the past five years of my tenure, about 800 residents of my ward have been brought under the ambit of old age and widow pensions. Four new tubewells have been installed, streetlights of Rs 10 lakh value were installed, roads were carpeted with Rs one crore, 150 senior cards were issued, 200 women were issued bus passes to enable them to travel at half price. As many as six new power transformers were installed with the investment of Rs 10 lakh additional sewerage main hall was also installed.

Why should you be voted for?

I will seek mandate on the basis of works finished in the ward and round the clock accessibility.

What is your agenda now?

I wish to end traffic snarls on the GT Road which passes along the three localities of my ward. However, this will end with the completion of the elevated road. Besides, I am in touch with the traffic police to end the menace of parking of buses on the road which results in traffic jams.

Residents swpeaks

Residents can knock at the councillor’s door anytime as his residence is in the ward. I like his contribution in getting the sewerage system cleaned once a year out of his own pocket. This has ended the problem of the clogging of sewerage in the area~

Caring two hoots for societal etiquettes and manners people urinate on the pillars, located opposite the residential houses and shops. The stench has become permanent and have ruined businesses as people don’t stop by~

— Harjit Singh, sharifpura

The councillor must end the menace of illegal parking of busses outside the bus stand which falls bang opposite of the constituency with the help of traffic cops. Awaiting customers, drivers also park their vehicles around these buses. This leads to congestion of the road and traffic blockade~

Tribune News Service

Amritsar, May 17
Local NGOs have offered the district administration that they will get ponds in Manawala and Dhaul Kalan villages on the GT Road and Ram Tirath Road, respectively, cleaned. The village ponds are in very pathetic condition. The ponds are chocked with weeds and wild growth.

“We are ready to pay the difference of wages to the labourers which they get under the MGNREGA programme,” said Dr AL Adlakha, a prominent doctor and philanthropist.

Usually, the labourers get Rs 166 under the MNREGA scheme which is half of the wages they get by working in private institutions, he said. Dr Adlakha said, he along with several other prominent citizens of the city, were ready to pay the remaining amount for cleaning and deepening of the pond which could prove a lifeline for the villagers.

Village ponds work as major agent to recharge underground water besides drainage of rain water in the village. "It will be a Kar Sewa (community service) with a difference. Members of our and other NGOs are also willing to help to renovate and deepen this pond. All we need is the cooperation of the administration and the officials of the revenue and the block and Panchayat development department to demarcate the boundaries and a village resolution to permit us to work on this pond," said Dr Adlakha. "We also plan to undertake such kar sewa for other ponds, thus improving water bodies of Punjab if we succeed in our efforts here," he added.

Parminder Singh, project officer MNREGA said the department has received a written representation from Dr Adlakha and his associates.

While commending the initiative he said this will greatly help conserve the water bodies in the rural areas. “We have written to the panchayat concerned to pass a resolution in this regard. As soon as we get the resolution passed by the panchayat, we will proceed to get the demarcation of the boundaries of the pond," he said.

Deepak Babbar of Mission Aagaaz, an NGO associated with the initiative said the NGO plans to plant saplings around the pond and put cement benches to turn the place into a beautiful picnic spot besides conserving a huge water body.
