MC ready to tackle water crisis

Amritsar, May 12
The Municipal Corporation claims to have completed all arrangements to deal with the shortage of drinking water during this summer.

The MC officials said duties have been assigned for assessing the need of water and measures to fulfill the demand.

The corporation officials said generators have been set up at various tubewells to meet the water demand during power failures.

The corporation has around 30 large-sized tanks built in various areas of the city, which it hopes to put to good use during the summer months, when the water demand is relatively high.

Even as the MC is worried about the quantity of drinking water, residents in few areas are complaining about the quality of water. Residents said the water supplied at their houses is highly unfit for drinking.

In a recent incident, residents of Nehru colony had complained of sewer mixed drinking water.

Jaswinder Singh, Superintending Engineer, Water Supply, said they have made all arrangements to cope up with the demand. He said generators at tubewells are being installed for a regular supply of water.

He said they have proactively made all arrangements so that residents do not face problems.

Congress councillors to protest against SAD-BJP’s ‘discriminatory’ ways
Tribune News Service

Amritsar, May 12
Congress councillors, headed by leader of opposition in Amritsar Municipal Corporation Ranjan Agarwal, today announced to launch agitation against the SAD-BJP government in protest against the alleged discriminatory attitude adopted towards their wards and registration of false cases against their workers and leaders.

Majority of our wards faced constant discrimination from the SAD-BJP government during all these five years and now when the MC elections are approaching, the government has started registering false cases against the Congress leaders to pressurise them, they alleged.

Agarwal alleged the police has registered a kidnapping case against former Congress councillor Mahesh Khanna. At present his wife is a councillor from the ward. He said this has been done to pressurise them so that they could not fight the elections.

“Though we have not decided the date of launching the protests, these would start soon,” he said while addressing mediapersons.

While criticising Mayor Shawet Malik, he said all the development projects currently underway in the city, including the construction of the elevated road, started during the Congress regime. And the SAD-BJP combine has been taking the credit of all these projects.

“In fact the much-touted city bus service and solid waste management projects announced by the present government could not see the light to the day,” he said.

He said the MC does not have much funds to give salaries to its employees. But the Mayor is wasting money in advertisements for taking credit of central schemes, he alleged.

He alleged the drinking water facility in large number of areas is still faulty. A number of localities do not have proper sewerage system, he said.
