Amritsar, May 18 The Health Department discovered two more unlicensed drug stores at two different villages, near here, today. Civil Surgeon Dr Hardeep Singh Ghai said a team of drug inspectors - Bableen Kaur and Amarpal Singh Malhi - raided stores at Nag Kalan and Bhangali villages.

Amritsar, May 18 Following a complaint filed by one Davinder Singh, father of one of the youth, identified as Jagjit Singh, the police lodged a complaint of attempt to murder against several persons. An affair between two students of a nursing college, who were doing their internship in the hospital, is said to be the reason behind the incident. The police authorities, however, said although they have filed a case on charges of attempt to murder, they are investigating the case. According to information, the accused came in an Innova car with jet black window-panes. They fired at least four gunshots, it is learnt. Gurnam Singh, ACP, who visited the spot to investigate the case, said he had instructed the police officials concerned to lodge an FIR after recording the statements of the youths. “Investigations would be carried out on the basis of the statement of youths,” he said. Dr Balbir Singh Dhillon, SMO, Civil Hospital, said private security guards hired by the Punjab Health System Corporation were in the another block of the hospital at the time of the incident. He said he was told by the onlookers that the accused fired at three students who were standing near the parking lot at the hospital. Terming the incident as unfortunate, he said he had brought the matter to the knowledge of the Civil Surgeon who would further take the issue of the security in the hospital premises with the higher ups.

Amritsar, May 18 The station would be revamped in consonance with the beautiful architecture of the Harmandar Sahib, said Divisional Railway Manager Naresh Chander Goel. On his first visit to Amritsar railway station after taking over as Divisional Railway Manager, Ferozepur division, Goel said the station would be coloured in yellow and it would have domes just like in the Golden Temple. He said the work on two more platforms would begin after two months. |

Amritsar, May 18 "We are being threatened and implicated in false cases for raising voice against the unscrupulous elements who were involved in the illegal trade. They enjoy police protection as well as political patronage due to which they have become so audacious and dangerous for the inhabitants especially for women folk," said Jaspal Singh, a resident of the area. Every type of intoxicants and illicit liquor is available at these illegal establishments. With intoxicants easily available here, many youths of the locality and its nearby areas have become drug addicts. "We live in constant fear as unscrupulous persons openly threaten us of dire consequences for protesting against them. They openly say the police could do no harm to them," said Ashwani Sharma, another resident. Residents demanded immediate arrest of the accused responsible for the spurt in drug addiction in the area which has also led to an increase in the crime incidents in the area. The dharna was lifted only after the assurance by the ADCP, Rashpal Singh Ghuman, who said stern action would be taken against the accused. "We will investigate into all the alleged false cases registered against the residents and appropriate action would be taken against the accused if the complaints are found to be false," said Ghuman while adding that raids would be conducted on the illegal shops.

Amritsar, May 18 The team found Tejinder Singh running an illegal medical store in Nag Kalan as he could not produce any licence for the same. He said 28 different medicine, including a few banned for sale, were seized from the shop. The department had also seized 17 different medicines from Gurmeet Medical Store at Bhangali. Ghai said the owner could not produce a valid licence during the checking. The record of sale and purchase of medicines was also missing. The department had yesterday detected an unlicensed medical store at Waryam Nagal village, near here.

Amritsar, May 18 “We are checking 125-150 chemist shops every month. Our stress is on the rural areas. We are also taking extra precautions while renewing licences of medical stores in the city as well as in the rural areas,” said Dr HS Ghai, Deputy Medical Commissioner-cum-officiating Civil Surgeon. In 2012 so far, the health department has seized huge quantity of medicines, including intoxicants, worth over Rs 8 lakh, he said. Gurvinder Singh, Zonal Licencing Authority, said while renewing the licences of chemist shops, a team of drug inspectors visits the store and checks the availability of pharmacist in the shop. He said a particular stamp is embossed on licences in which the medical store owners agrees not to sale six products which are misused by drug addicts and are banned by health authorities. Recently, the government cancelled the licences of three chemist shops - one in Katra Sher Singh and two in Rajasansi areas. Dr Ghai said cases were being lodged against the druggists who were involved in the sale of intoxicants without proper records. |
7,500 to appear for JET today
Amritsar, May 18 The district coordinator of the test, Gyan Ranjan, who is Principal of Mai Bhago Government Polytechnic College, said across the state nearly 1,08,000 candidates would appear for this test for the admission to 59,000 seats in 29 disciplines. The test will comprise objective type paper and will be conducted between 10 am to 1 pm. Result would be declared in the first week of June following which online counselling sessions would be held. Matriculate students could appear for the entrance test. |

Amritsar, May 18 The police has recovered Rs 6.3 lakh, 290 grams of gold jewellery, two laptops, a car and certain documents from their office located on the Cooper road here. Investigations revealed that they had taken more than Rs 30 lakh from 40 persons, who were also present at the Civil Lines police station. The accused used to charge Rs 7.5 lakh per person for sending them to Canada. Sukhwinder Singh Randhawa, SHO, Civil Lines police station, said Prince and his wife used to take Rs 1 lakh in advance and the remaining money after the work was done. “They used to tell their targets that they would deduct Rs 30,000 from their monthly salary in Canada,” said Randhawa. He said a case under Sections 420, 467, 468, 471 and 120-B of the IPC had been registered against them. He said while Deepika was sent to judicial custody, Prince was remanded in police custody for further investigations. |
SPCA to set up kennel for injured, sick dogs
Amritsar, May 18 The meeting was attended functionaries, nominated executive members and members of the SPCA. In the meeting it was decided to increase the number of executive members from two to five. The newly inducted members are Kiran Kanojia, Mukesh Sharma and Sehaj Gulati. The society has also decided to rent out shops on its premises for generating a regular income. Rajat Aggarwal said that a kennel for injured and sick dogs was being set up in the SPCA complex. The society also decided to prepare its financial statement and get it audited. The Deputy Commissioner entrusted SDM, City II, Manmohan Singh Kang the duty of inquiring the status of the probe of poisoning of stray dogs in the city. — TNS |
300 examined at eye check-up camp
Amritsar, May 18 Sanjeev Anand. Eye care specialists from the Jallianwala Bagh Memorial Civil Hospital Dr Chander Mohan and Rakesh Kumar, besides others, checked the patients. Free medicines were provided to the patients with the help from Alcon Pharmaceuticals and Orbit Pharmaceuticals. The patients were also educated about the ways of guarding their eyes against different problems. The doctors advised the patients to undergo regular and free eye check-ups at government hospitals. |
