Trade unions celebrate May Day in Mussoorie
Workers seek implementation of new labour policy
Our Correspondent

Mussoorie, May 1
The Left-supported trade unions took out a procession to mark May Day today. Labour Day celebrations began from the union office in Landour and ended at Gandhi Chowk in here today. The workers also demanded the implementation of the new labour policy in the state. A memorandum was also presented by the trade union coordination committee to the Labour Minister in support of their demands via SDM, Mussoorie.

Later in a meeting held at Gandhi Chowk, tributes were paid to the labourers slain and injured in Chicago, the US, for demanding fixed working hours in 1886. The workers also opposed the liberalisation policy of the Central Government, International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

The state Communist Party general secretary, Samar Bhandari, lambasted both the BJP and Congress.

He said both parties were working towards subduing the labour movement at the behest of the corporate sector, from where they allegedly received funding for elections and were looting the state at will. He said these two parties in the state had not been able to implement minimum wages for the workers.

Samar Bhandari also said that the newly elected Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna, instead of thinking about the poor workers by implementing the new labour policy, was busy giving land to the corporate houses such as Mahindra Group at throwaway prices, which was uncalled for. He demanded the fixation of minimum wages for workers, formation of a committee for 49 schedule employment, insurance policies for labourers and regularisation of daily wage earners, etc.

Another trade union leader from Mussoorie said that the absence of a clear labour policy was leading to migration of the workforce from the state for which both the Congress and BJP were responsible.

The members of the Indian People Theatre Association (IPTA) also celebrated May Day by bursting crackers late in the evening.

RP Badoni, president of Mussoorie Hotel Workers' Association, also warned that if their demand of renewing the minimum wage is not met, they will protest on 18th May in the form of shutting down the various business installations in Mussoorie.

Munsiyari hoteliers want Milam trek route cleared
BD Kasniyal

Pithoragarh, May 1
Residents and businessmen of Munsiyari town and hoteliers related with tourism have demanded that the route to Milam be made obstacle free for trekkers. The trekking season is likely to be affected due to the blockade of the route at Laspagari, 42 km from Munsiyari.

“As the track to Milam has not been cleared of blockade, horses carrying luggage of trekkers are not able to cross this point. The trekkers are bound to cut short their visit to Milam, thus inflicting heavy losses on the people and businessmen of Munsiyari associated with tourism,” said Gulab Singh Pangti, president of the Malla Johar Sansh Samiti.

Though the Public Works Department (PWD) engineers have sent labourers to the point of blockade, but due to the non-availability of a budget for the repair of the route they are not in a position to carry out the repair work beyond a limit. “Due to the non-availability of funds this year, we can only send our regular teams to the blocked spot and cannot hire extra labourers to open the route soon,” said Anand Singh Bisht, SDO (PWD), Didihat division.

Pangti said residents of Milam, Laspa, Bilju, Rilkot, Chilans and Martoli villages, who had migrated to lower valleys during the winter and were now returning home along with their 1,000 odd horses, had been stranded at Laspagari since April 29 as a local bridge had washed away due to heavy snowfall in the area.

“The villagers have somehow managed to cover the route, but their horses laden with luggage are still stranded there awaiting clearance of the route,” said Pangti.

The SDM, Munsiyari, Jaswant Singh Rathod, said the PWD labourers had cleared the route to Milam at Laspagari despite lack of funds. Now, the villagers would be able to return home and the trekkers would also have no difficulty in covering the route.

“We are sending ration and essential goods to the villages beyond the blocked point on the route through porters as horses are not able to cross it,” said the SDM.

Meanwhile, a group of 42 trekkers led by the Society for Trekking and Environmental Protection, a Delhi based trekking organisation, has set out on trekking the Milam route from Munsiyari. The team consists of trekkers from across the country. “If these trekkers are not able to go beyond Laspagari and have to return due to the blockage of the route, it will adversely affect the trekking business in Munsiyari as all hotels of the town depend on it,” said Jagdish Singh Rawat, president of the Hotel Association of Munsiyari.

The district supply office disclosed that 800 quintals of ration meant for the villages situated in the higher reaches had reached Munsiyari. However, the ration could not be distributed to the villagers as the horses were unable to tread the route. “In the absence of horses, we are sending ration through goats,” said Rathod.

He added that if goats were also unable to carry ration, it would be sent through porters. “The ration to be stored at a godown at Burfu beyond Laspagari has been despached there with the help of porters,” said the SDM.

Meanwhile, due to a sudden change in weather the high Himalayan valleys received fresh snowfall resulting in the closure of the Kailash Mansarovar yatra route beyond Gunji. “Due to fresh snowfall on the Kalapani, Nabhidhang, Gunji and Panchchuli peaks, the lowest temperatures in Munsiyari and Pithoragarh towns were 4°C and 6°C, respectively,” said an official of the Meteorological Department.
