Faridkot, April 24
Five students of an engineering college were attacked with sharp-edged weapons and wounded in a bloody fight between two factions on the Faridkot-Sadiq road today in the evening.

The injured students were taken to the Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital, Faridkot. The police received information about the fight after a cop who happened to be passing by, informed the Faridkot police.

A police party reached the spot to control the situation and chased away the fighting students.

Though police is investigating into the reasons behind the clash, but prima facie, it appears to be a struggle between two groups of students over representing themselves as the ‘leaders’ of a students’ organisation. This students’ body owes its allegiance to the SAD (B).

Iqbal Singh, assistant sub- inspector, who reached the spot, said tension among these groups of students was prevailing for the last two days after the poster of a student leader was torn by the members of the other group.

The tension turned into a fight when the students used sharp-edged weapons and hockey sticks to attack their opponents and even chased them in the fields adjoining the college.

Though there are reports of students even using fire-arms but police did not confirm this saying the matter was under investigation.

Bathinda, April 24
The CPI (ML) Liberation today asked the SAD-BJP government to fulfil the promise that it made to the houseless labourers during the Assembly elections saying they would be given residential plots if the alliance returned to power.

Stating this here today, national general secretary of the CPI (ML) Liberation Deepankar Bhattacharya said the matter relating to allotment of residential plots to houseless labourers had now been referred to the Panchayats which was wrong on the part of the SAD-BJP government. The government should itself allot the plots to the homeless labourers in place of referring the matter to the Panchayats, he added.

Bhattacharya said at present, corruption and price rise were the major issues in the country. He added that a big agitation at the national-level was the need of the hour and the Left parties were making efforts for it.

He also said the CPI (ML) Liberation wanted that the Left parties should jointly prepare a common minimum programme (CMP).

The Left leader said his party favoured a strong Lokpal which should cover the prime minister, members of Parliament, judiciary etc. He said his party would launch a nationwide movement of the youths from May 1 to August 9 for getting constitutional status to ‘Right to Work’ for all and unemployment allowance for the unemployed youths.

He said his party would contest the next Lok Sabha elections on the issues of corruption and inflation.

Among those present were a central committee member of the CPI (ML) Liberation Swapan Mukherjee, state secretary of the party Rajwinder Singh Rana, state president of Mazdoor Mukti Morcha Bhagwant Samao, state president of Punjab Kisan Union Ruldu Singh Mansa and a state-level leader of the party Harwinder Sema.

LJP flays state govt’s excise policy
Tribune News Service

Bathinda, April 24
State president of the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) Kiranjit Singh Gehri today criticised the excise policy of the state government, saying that on the one hand, the government was talking about opening more drug de-addiction centres in the state while on the other, it had been giving licences to the contractors to sell liquor in a big way.

Gehri asked the district excise authorities to order the liquor contactors to display the rate lists at the liquor vends. He said the venders were also not issuing bills to the buyers, so the issuance of bills to the consumers should be made mandatory.

Gehri also asked the state government to determine the commission of the contractors besides informing people about the actual rates of the liquor. Besides, there should be uniformity in the rates of different varieties of liquor throughout the state.

He said in case nothing was done by the government in this direction, the LJP would launch an agitation to compel the state government to do the needful.
