Cops catch two more in heroin smuggling case
Praful Chander Nagpal

Fazilka, April 19
The city police has arrested two of the accomplices of Nirvail Singh and Dilbagh Singh, who were nabbed two days ago along with a consignment of heroin weighing 20 kg.

The arrested accomplices have been identified as Jagtar Singh alias Tari, a resident of Dall village, police station Khalra, and Gurdev Singh alias doctor, a resident of Amarkot village, police station Valtoha, Tarn Taran district.

The city police had seized 20 kg of heroin worth about `100 crore from Nirvail Singh, a resident of Ruknewala village in Ferozepur district, and Dilbagh Singh, a resident of Sito village in Tarn Tarn district.

Nirvail and Dilbagh were produced before Judicial Magistrate First Class, Fazilka, Ashish Saldi, yesterday evening, while Jagtar and Gurdev were produced today.

Four of them have been sent on a police remand till April 27.

It is learnt that during the preliminary interrogation, Nirvail and Dilbagh had confessed that they were to hand over the consignment to Jagtar and Gurdev. A revelation about their hideouts brought Jagtar and Gurdev in the police net.

Meanwhile, the Border Security Force (BSF) and other intelligence agencies are groping in dark over the seizure of heroin in this border belt. Seizure of a huge haul of heroin worth Rs 100 crore in international market has raised many questions. But the officials of the intelligence agencies are tight-lipped.

A revelation by the arrested smugglers that they had been in constant touch with a notorious Pakistani smuggler Nadeem Master has left the intelligence officials puzzled in this area where heroin is being seized frequently.

However, BSF Abohar Sector Headquarters DIG, Vimal Satyarthi, claims that “in his area of operation, the situation is under control and the BSF personnel had intercepted the smugglers many a times in the recent past”.

“Our agencies are working on different theories on how the consignment landed in this area and from which border did it cross over to India,” said Satyarthi.

Nirvail and Dilbagh had come into contact with Nadeem while they were lodged in Ferozepur Central Jail for separate cases of smuggling. Nadeem went to Pakistan after completing his sentence.

It may be recalled that the officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence had on October 25, 2011, recovered 58 kg of heroin worth about `300 crore from the courtyard of Khan Singh, a labourer, in the border village of Hasta Kalan of Fazilka sub-division.

During a visit the grain market yesterday, a number of farmers who had come to sell their produce told TNS that the district administration failed to provide even basic facilities to them.

Farmers’ produce was seen lying in the open beside strewn garbage.

“Garbage is littered almost everywhere. In the absence of any other option, we are forced to dump our produce next to it. It is surprising to note that the purchasing of wheat was delayed but the authorities concerned still failed to get the area cleaned,” said Gurdeep Singh of Lambi Dhabh village.

Another farmer Gurjant Singh pointed out the problem of stray cattle in the grain market.

He added, “The higher-ups must visit here to see the irregularities for themselves and make amends. Some fire tenders must be stationed here to lessen the loss in case of fire.”

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Paramjit Singh visited the local grain yard to formally start the purchase of wheat by government agencies. He directed the authorities to provide all kind of facilities to the farmers.

 CM’s thanksgiving tour begins today
Archit Watts/TNS

Muktsar, April 19
Frequent visits of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to his home district Muktsar are giving sleepless nights to the officials here.

After concluding his five-day tour on April 9, the CM is beginning a two-day thanksgiving tour in his Lambi constituency tomorrow. The CM would start the tour from Dhani Telianwali and would cover 13 villages on the first day. On the next day, he would start his tour from village Dabwali Malko Ki and conclude it at Arniwala Wazira village.

All the senior functionaries in the state government, be it administrative officials, health department employees, education department staff or the police, have to accompany the CM during his tour. The CM’s visit not only makes their schedule hectic but sometimes they also have to face the CM’s wrath for not performing their duties in a diligent manner.

A senior official in the District Administrative Complex (DAC) said these days, they were highly stressed, mentally as well as physically, as on the one hand, the government was determined to make them follow the 9 am to 5 pm work schedule and on the other, they have to accompany the CM in villages on alternate days. “We have to remain on toes all the time when the CM is here in the district and when he leaves, we have to remain present in the office from morning to evening,” said the official.

DC Paramjit Singh recently issued show-cause notices to seven employees of the DAC after finding them not present at their respective seats.

 Cong legislator alleges political vendetta
Our Correspondent

Ferozepur, April 19
The Congress MLA from Guruharsahai, Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi, has alleged that the SAD government was victimising his supporters and party workers.

Addressing the mediapersons here today, Rana Sodhi alleged that the police had unleashed a reign of terror against his supporters, adding that he had prepared a list of Congress workers on whom ‘false’ cases had been slapped.

Urging the state government not to indulge in political vendetta, Rana Sodhi said the government should focus more on development and public welfare issues rather than slapping cases against innocent people.

It is pertinent to mention that on Wednesday, the police had arrested one of the prominent rice mill owners of Gururharsahai, who is considered very close to Sodhi, in a case related to misappropriation of paddy belonging to the government.

Sodhi said he would take up the matter with Union Home Minister P Chidambaram and urge him to take remedial steps to prevent misuse of the government machinery in the state.

Meanwhile, SSP Hardial Singh Mann said two cases had been registered in Guruharashai in connection with the embezzlement of paddy. The complaints in this regard were received from the procurement agencies concerned. He said the cases were registered after the scam came to the fore during an inquiry conducted by the police.
