Harrowing time for Ludhiana couple

Showcasing the ugly side of the City Beautiful, a Ludhiana-based couple faced a harrowing time last night when six youths robbed the woman of her purse, thrashed her husband and broke the window panes of their car following a scuffle outside a discotheque in Sector 26 last night.

RTE dreams crash for many

Three children of Dadu Majra, who were turned out of St Peter’s School in Chandigarh. April 2 this year was probably the best day of their lives, as Mehak, Muskaan and Khushi had got admission to “big” school St Peters near their house. They had been admitted free of cost on seats reserved under the RTE Act as economically weaker section candidates.

Sisters thrash brother in public for ‘beating up’ wife, booked
Mohali, April 19
Kaka Singh with his feet tied, lying on road after being thrashed by his two elder sisters and relatives at Madanpura Chowk in Mohali on Thursday. High drama was witnessed at Madanpura Chowk here this afternoon when two women tied up the feet of their younger brother after beating him up publicly with the help of some other relatives while taking him to a nearby police station for beating up his wife.

1-yr jail term for lawyer
Panchkula, April 19
The local court sentenced a lawyer to one-year imprisonment in a cheque bounce case today. The guilty, Satish Kumar Chaudhary, practises in the Panchkula court.

Study to estimate age of glacial sediments conducted
Chandigarh, April 19
A study to estimate the age of glacial sediments using thermo luminescence technique was jointly carried out by Dr LN Sharma, associate professor, PEC, and scientists from Snow and Avalanche Studies Establishment (SASE). The study reveals that by analysing glacial sediments geographical location of glacier terminus and its history in terms of advancing or retreating of a glacier can be traced.

All 12 BJP-SAD councillors of the municipal corporation have tendered their resignations to UT Administrator Shivraj Patil from 12 sub-committees of the corporation in protest. BJP councillor Laxami Devi will submit her resignation after a few days, as she is admitted to the PGI after an accident.

321 students felicitated at annual function
Ambala, April 19
The annual prize distribution function of Government College, Ambala Cantt, was organised today. A total of 321 students were awarded prizes for their achievements in academic, cultural, sports and NSS fields. Deputy Commissioner Shekhar Vidyarthi was the chief guest of the occasion.

Fire devours 15 acres of wheat crop

Around 15 acres of ripe wheat crop in three villages turned into ashes this noon. The incident was a big blow to the farmers who now have demanded compensation for the damaged crop.

Thieves decamp with Rs 1.25 lakh
Kalka, April
19
The thieves decamped with Rs 1.25 lakh in broad daylight from a car parked on National Highway-22 at Pinjore. The police source said that the incident took place today at around 10.30 am, when Arun Kumar went to purchase furniture in a shop and parked his car opposite to the shop.

Procurement of wheat picks up

The arrival of wheat has picked up in the grain markets of the district. Till today, over 27,677 MT of the wheat has arrived in mandis and out of this 21,339 MT has been purchased by different government agencies, said Yashveer Mahajan, Deputy Commissioner.

Hospital named after freedom fighter being named ignored
Lalru, April 19
The Civil hospital, Lalru, which was launched on the name of great freedom fighter Baba Prithvi Singh Azad in 1995 as a rural hospital, could not receive upgradation and recognition on the name of freedom fighter till now. It continued as Mini primary health center and, surprisingly, the name of Baba Prithvi Singh Azad was not mentioned in the concerned documents of the hospital. People of the area have been continually demanding the upgradation of the hospital and recognition on the name of Baba Prithvi Singh Azad, who belonged to Lalru and contributed in the freedom struggle.

Hawara, Bheora produced in court

In the ongoing trial, Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) terrorists, Jagtar Singh Hawara and Paramjit Singh Bheora, were produced in a local court today in the jailbreak case of 2004. They were brought here especially from Tihar Jail in Delhi.

2 convicted of robbery
Chandigarh, April 19
The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Shalini Nagpal today convicted two persons in a robbery case. The court convicted Arun and Jagpal for robbing a person at a knifepoint in Bapu Dham Colony in 2010. The quantum of sentence will be pronounced on Saturday.
