Fazilka, April 17
The Fazilka police seized 20 kg of heroin worth `100 crore in the international market from two smugglers. The seizure is the largest by the police so far in Punjab.

IG, Bathinda Zone, Nirmal Singh Dhillon, while addressing a press conference today, said the SSP Fazilka, Ashok Batth, had received a definite tip-off about the heroin.

A police party led by Shinder Singh, in-charge, Sadar police station, laid a naka this morning near the border village, Bakainwala, 25 km from here, and intercepted two youth coming on a bike from the Rajasthan side. On seeing the police, they tried to flee only to be chased and nabbed by the police. The motorcyclists, identified as Nirvail Singh, a resident of village Ruknewala under Ferozepur police station and Dilbagh Singh, a resident of village Sito under Patti police station in Taran Taran district were carrying 20 packets of heroin. Each packet, weiging a kg, carried marks of four star and double apple heroin made in Afghanistan.

As per the IG, during preliminary interrogation, the smugglers said they had brought the heroin from Hindumalkot border of Sriganagnagar district in Rajasthan. They revealed that the consignment had been sent by Nadeem Master, a Pakistani heroin smuggler.

Nirvail Singh revealed he had met Nadeem Master in Central Jail, Ferozepur, when both were lodged there from 2009 to 2011 in two different cases of smuggling.

They maintained there contacts even after their release. Nadeem pushed the consignment and directed Nirvail to collect it from the market place near the Hindumalkot Border.

Accompanied by Dilbagh Singh, Nirvail took the consignment from the place and was carrying it to his residence in Ruknewala village. They disclosed to the police that Nadeem Master was to direct them on further transportation of the heroin. The plan, however, was foiled by the police.

Police sources said Nirvail was earlier too booked for carrying two kg of heroin under Valtoha police station in Taran Taran district. He was also booked for possessing fake currency amounting to `1.5 lakh under Lopoke police station in Majitha.

Sadar police has registered a case against them under the NDPS Act. DIG, Ferozepur range, Paramraj Singh Umranangal, SSP Ashok Batth and other police officials of the district were present at the press meet.
