Teen mother freed from brothel
New Delhi, March 31 Kalpana was rescued by the police and an anti-human trafficking NGO, Shakti Vahini at 7 pm today. A police officer said she had been brought to Delhi by a human trafficker about a month ago. According to a member of the NGO, she had worked as a domestic maid in Kolkata. She is married and has two young children. "She met a man on a local train at Kolkata. She calls him Bappi. He promised to provide her employment in a hotel at Howrah, West Bengal. She agreed and they boarded a train. Instead of Howrah, he tricked her into going to Delhi," said the member. The man kept her at Kotla for two days before selling her at a brothel on GB Road. "The owner of the brothel said that she had bought two women, including the one from West Bengal, for Rs 1.70 lakh. She claimed that they were to work for her for a year and thereafter they were supposed to be sent back homes," added the member. Kalpana disclosed to the members of Shakti Vahini that when she refused to get involved in sex work, she was beaten and repeatedly raped. She will be lodged at a shelter home until the West Bengal police arrive in Delhi to take her back to Kolkata. |
Official stabbed despite strict security
New Delhi, March 31 Despite the security measures in place, Vijay Kumar Gupta (60), the Additional Director General of Foreign Trade in the Ministry of Commerce was stabbed multiple times by some robbers at his residence last night. He stays in a duplex with his wife, Kusum Gupta (54) and son, Dhruv Gupta. Kusum works as a teacher at the Air Force Senior Secondary School at Race Course Road. Dhruv has done his graduation. Vijay and his wife were alone yesterday. Dhruv had been on a trip to Udaipur for the past few days. About 9.15 pm, Vijay went to the balcony after hearing a noise. The two robbers, who were waiting there, attacked him with knives. They escaped when neighbours arrived below the balcony as Vijay and Kusum shouted for help. The incident has shocked residents, who assert that despite security arrangements such incidents have been happening regularly. Rajiv Ghelot, RWA president of the area, said, "In the past one year, there have been six attempts of robbery, some cases of chain snatching and an attempt to murder. We installed nine CCTV cameras at the main entrance to the colony and at the lanes where there is heavy movement of people and vehicles. We have employed nine private guards, who have been given wireless sets to communicate. Policemen also patrol the area." Vijay’s stabbing has surprised even the police. Additional DCP (South), PH Khushwa said, " The private guards were on duty last night when the incident happened. Police patrolling is regularly conducted in the colony." |
