New Delhi, March 28
The Delhi police today cracked down on Tibetan activists who managed to hold protests across the city despite the heavy security arrangements in the wake of the self-immolation of a Tibetan youth.

The 27-year-old youth, Jamphel Yeshi, had set himself on fire at a Tibetan demonstration at Jantar Mantar on the afternoon of March 26. He, like other Tibetan activists, was protesting against the visit of Chinese President Hu Jintao to Delhi for the Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa Summit (BRICS).

They also staged the demonstration to voice their angst against the Chinese oppression in Tibet.

Jamphel passed away at 7.30 am today at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where he was being treated for 98 per cent burn injuries. His body has been preserved at Lady Hardinge Hospital. It will be taken to Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, for performing last rituals.

The Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC) had recorded the statement of Jamphel before he passed away. "What I want to convey here is the concern of the six million Tibetans. At a time when we are making our final move towards our goal, if you have money, it is time to spend it; if you are educated, it is time to produce results; if you have control over your life, I think the day has come to sacrifice your life.

The fact that Tibetan people are setting themselves on fire in this 21st century is to let the world know about their suffering, and to tell the world about the denial of basic human rights…Tibet belongs to Tibetans. Victory to Tibet! These were excerpt from Jamphel's statement.

His death triggered mass protests across Delhi. They demanded international support for their cause of fighting against Chinese oppression in Tibet. They voiced their solidarity in protesting against an "unwelcome" visitor - the Chinese President at Delhi.

In a whirl of feverish activity, they staged demonstrations outside the UN office this morning. They reached the Oberoi Hotel, where the Chinese President is staying.

Dorjee Tseten, national director of Students for Free Tibet said, "Twelve of our activists were detained outside the Oberoi Hotel. One of them had managed to reach the entry gate. He had removed his shirt and the words - 'Hu Jintao is a failed leader' and 'Free Tibet now' - were painted on his chest."

Several activists who were protesting at Jantar Mantar today were picked up by security personnel and shoved into buses. They were later detained.

"About 140 protesters were detained from places such as Jantar Mantar, United Nations Headquarters and Khan Market. They have been sent to Tihar Jail. On March 26, we detained 150 Tibetan protesters who have also been lodged at Tihar Jail," said Joint Commissioner of Police (Central Range), Taj Hassan.

After Jamphel's death, the police had deployed a heavy contingent of troops to secure the area outside RML Hospital. Many Tibetans who have arrived from outside Delhi are staying at Ambedkar Bhawan in Jhandewalan. The police has imposed "house arrest" on them and placed restrictions on their movement. They cordoned off the building to ensure that no one leaves it. Security arrangements around the Oberoi Hotel have also been beefed up. Majnu Ka Tilla, a Tibetan colony, was swamped with the police and security personnel, who prevented people from assembling together. Many Tibetans prayed inside monasteries and shops to protest against Hu Jintao's visit.

New Delhi, March 28
After the fake marksheet case at Ramjas College baffled Delhi University last year, yet another college has reported marksheet scandal. Dyal Singh College authorities have found eight fake revaluation marksheets.

Out of the eight students who submitted the fake revaluation reports, seven were from BSc physical sciences while one was from chemistry (honours). The college has lodged an FIR against all the eight students.

IS Bakshi, principal, Dyal Singh College, said, "These students had failed in their second year exams and applied for revaluation. They were supposed to submit their revaluated results as soon as possible for speedy admission to third year. However, they submitted a forged marksheet of second year," he said.

"Ideally a student is promoted to next year with normal formalities if he/she has passed the exam. However, in case the student doesn't clear his paper, they apply for revaluation, or appear for a supplementary exam. They are supposed to submit the required documents respectively for the same. Four students had already secured admission on the basis of these forged revaluation reports while the other four attempted to secure admission when we realised that the reports were forged," Bakshi said.

The admission of the four students who had secured admission was cancelled by the college. This scam has come to light just months after the fake CBSE class 12 marksheet racket was unearthed at Ramjas College last year by the college administration.

A senior staff member at Dayal Singh said, "Colleges have become much more attentive to such issues after the Ramjas scandal. We aim at scrutinizing the documents properly before giving admission. The case could have gone unnoticed with even a little laxity."

Ankita Saini
22-year-old Ankita Saini has RSS link as her father-in-law is the president of the organisation in Hauz Khas

New Delhi, March 28
The fact that the BJP candidate from the Hauz Khas ward is just 22 years old with no political experience has raised doubts among the people regarding her efficacy, if elected. Ankita Saini, the youngest BJP candidate in the fray for the MCD election, wants people to vote for her and create history by sending her to the municipal corporation.

Ankita has done a course in international marketing from Toronto and is married to a businessman. Though she has no political background, she is connected to the RSS.

If voted to power, her priority will be to improve the condition of the roads in villages in her ward. Though the construction and repairing of sewers is not the job of the MCD, she says she will pressurise the Congress-ruled Delhi government to repair the sewerage in villages where sewage overflows, emitting a foul smell.

"In posh localities like Uday Park, Niti Bagh, Hauz Khas, I will launch a movement to improve the parks where residents go for exercise and walk in mornings and evenings," she said.

Ankita will start meeting local people from tomorrow. She plans to go to parks and houses in the area to appeal to voters to bring BJP to power if they want good governance in the corporation and improvement in the civic amenities.

The youngest candidate of the BJP, Ankita says that though she does not have a political background, her father-in-law, who is the RSS president of the Hauz Khas area, will help her in the campaign as he has been popular in the area for a long time.

"I lived in the area before marriage and know people here well," said Ankita, pointing out that her rival Congress candidate is a resident of Safdarjung Enclave and in MCD elections, people prefer local candidates.

Ankita has got ticket because of the sitting councillor Arti Mehra who has won MCD elections thrice and has refused to contest this time.

BJP women cry foul over ticket

New Delhi, March 28
The women party workers of BJP today protested against the senior leadership of the party outside its state office at Pant Marg. The 'favouritism' in the allotment of tickets to women candidates has stirred up discontent in the senior party workers many of whom have been working for the party for 15 years. The senior women activists holding the protest said that they have not benefited at all from the 50 per cent quota to women in the polls.

"I was a government servant and left my job to join politics. I have been a full-time activist of the party for the last 17 years. Even I was not awarded the ticket. We have felt betrayed," said Mukund Aggrawal, president, Mahila Morcha, West district.

They said that women are merely filling in for their politician husbands. The BJP has fielded 139 women candidates in the elections as against 140 of the Congress. The list also has five Muslims candidates in the wards such as Jama Masjid, Minto Road, Turkman Gate, Qasabpura (women) and Zakir Nagar.

"These politicians' wives who have been given tickets do not even know the difference between BJP and BSP," said Aggrawal.

Delhi BJP chief Vijender Gupta has also fielded his wife, Shobha Vijender in the polls from Rohini Central.

It was not only in the BJP, but there was an undercurrent of dissatisfaction in the senior women activists of the Congress also. The disappointed women supporters of the party levelled allegations of favouritism against the Delhi Congress as some relatives and wives of councillors have made it to the list in the areas reserved for women.

Some of those whose family members have been given tickets are former councillor Jitender Kochar's wife Nutan, Nathu Ram Nagar's son Kapil, councillor Tarun Kumar's wife Prerna Singh, Surender Sharma's wife Renu Sharma, late Congress leader Deep Chand Bandhu's daughter-in-law Sheel, Tek Chand Sharma's son Virender and Mahabal Mishra's sister-in-law Vimla Devi.

As a result, a number of prominent local leaders have filed nominations against BJP's and Congress' official candidates. Meanwhile, Delhi BJP chief Vijender Gupta appealed to the party workers to start election campaign unitedly.
