Moga, February 25
The Food and Civil Supplies Department has launched a special drive to check the misuse of cooking gas cylinders and check the weight following scores of complaints in the Moga district.

In this drive, the department recovered two gas cylinders of Indane belonging to Hargobind Gas Agency which had been found underweight violating the specifications of the Indian Oil Company on Friday.

A senior official of the district administration revealed that the 1.40 kg and 1.90 kg of cooking gas had been found less weight from these two cylinders recovered from the delivery vehicle of the said gas agency.

The District Food and Civil Supplies Controller (DFSC) Dr Sona Thind said that an FIR under Sections 379, 420 of the IPC and Section 7 of Essential Commodities Act has been registered against Munna Lal, the delivery man of the agency, who has been arrested by the police.

However, no legal action has been taken against the owner of the gas agency who is a retired district welfare officer, whose son is a high-ranking official in the Vigilance Bureau at the Chandigarh office.

It was learnt that the said officer used his influence on the local administration and the police not to register the case against the owner of the gas agency.

A senior officer of the district administration while admitting that he received a phone call from the said officer who requested him not to register the case said that the administration would not tolerate any kind of lapse in essential services.

“We have got registered a case from whom the gas cylinders have been recovered and now it is the duty of the police to find out whether the owner of the gas agency is involved in this cheating with the consumers or not,” the officer said.

Adding that the Food and Civil Supplies Department has made it a routine exercise to keep a check on the gas agencies, the DFSC said that in the past few days the department had seized more than 70 gas cylinders for violations and none of them had been returned back.

She warned the gas agencies to obey the rules or face action. “We will not allow the consumers to suffer at any cost,” she added.

Meanwhile, there have been numerous complaints against the gas agencies that the consumers were not only being cheated but also harassed by them by not booking delivering and the gas cylinders in time.

It has come to notice that the gas agency owners in normal practice book gas cylinder after 3 weeks of the first delivery of the cylinder and then supply the next cylinder after 3 to 4 weeks, which means a consumer gets cylinder after 6 to 7 weeks from the date of last booking.
