Farmer adopts apiculture, says money sweeter than honey
Moga, February 22 The progressive farmer, Gurbax Singh, a resident of the Samalsar village of the Baghapurana sub-division under Moga district started keeping bees with the help of the agriculture department in the year 1994-95 with just five boxes. Now, he has 250 boxes and his net earning from selling honey and production of honey bees is Rs 5 lakh per year. Talking to The Tribune, Gurbax said he owned just 2.5 acres of land from which it was very difficult to make both ends meet but switching to apiculture had not only raised his economic status but also helped to educate his children. “My son recently joined the state police service after completing his graduation while my daughter is doing her graduation in education,” he said. He said profit was earned through dedication and hard work. “I migrate with the bee colonies (boxes) from my village to Ganganagar in Rajasthan in the winters during the flowering of oil seed and pulses crops, to Jalandhar district in the sunflower season and to Muktsar during the flowering of eucalyptus trees just after the winter,” he said. Meanwhile, the chief agriculture officer of Moga Dr Ravi Kumar Sabbarwal and agriculture officer Dr Jaswinder Singh Brar revealed that the union government provides 50 per cent subsidy on the purchase of bee colonies and the farmers should come forward to adopt beekeeping as an allied agricultural practice. They said that the agriculture department facilitates to provide training on beekeeping to the interested farmers through the Agriculture Technology and Management Agency (ATMA) in association with the
Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) under the supervision of the Punjab Agriculture University, Ludhiana. Dr Brar said , “This is an ideal time to start beekeeping because the period between February 20 to April 15 has pollen and nectar in abundance, rewarding bee flora are available and weather conditions also remain normally favourable to apiculture.” He said that brood rearing in the colonies was in full swing these days and the colonies grow rapidly helping to multiply the existing colonies. “The bee colonies can be migrated to eucalyptus plantation in the beginning of March, when flowering is at its peak,” he said. Gurbhej Singh a bee keeper of Dosanj village who started bee keeping in 2009 from ten colonies, now has 40 colonies. He said that he plans to double his bee colonies by the end of the next year. Adding that there are at least 10,000 bee colonies with an estimated production of 4,000 quintals of honey annually, the agro scientists said the farmers should first get proper training and adopt latest scientific innovations to make beekeeping a more profitable ‘enterprise’. |
Ramoowalia flays Centre
Bathinda, February 22 To a question, Ramoowalia said if the Congress-led UPA government withdrew the powers from the EC to make it toothless then it would be a big jolt to the democratic set up of the country. He warned the Centre not to do so otherwise people would never forgive it. Ramoowalia was here today to enquire about the well-being of Rajya Sabha member Balwinder Singh Bhunder in a private hospital here. With regard to the results of the Assembly elections in Punjab, Ramoowalia claimed the SAD-BJP alliance would emerge victorious in a big way. He was of the view that the SAD-BJP alliance would win at least 70 seats as the people had voted for the development works undertaken by the incumbent government during its tenure in the state. However, Ramoowalia expressed his anguish over the manner in which the political parties were taking up the issues in the elections, wheher it be Punjab or other states like Uttar Pradesh. He said he was also worried over the manner in which money and drugs were distributed to lure the voters in the elections. He said the political issues, raised by the parties several times, did not talk about the welfare of the people. |
