City boy goes down in history
New Delhi, January 18 It was the initiative of this 10th class student at the accident site on July 12, 2010 that passengers on the DTC bus got up to help in taking the injured to the Sushruta Trauma Centre. When this young hero dared to help the injured without fearing any police hassle, there were many among the passers-by who chose to be just onlookers. "I was supposed to take the minibus but preferred to take the bus following it. Around the U-turn when I saw several students trapped under the toppled vehicle, I got down from the bus while many passengers kept looking helplessly. As I pleaded with them, some lifted the minibus while I crawled under the overturned bus and took out the injured," said Uma, who stays in Sonia Vihar. There was a traffic jam around Kingsway Camp. Many people passing through the way didn't stop their vehicles to carry the injured to the hospital, he said. "I stood in front of a few vehicles and then they had to stop and took them to the trauma centre. I got stretchers with the help of others and took the victims inside. The next day when I saw the photograph in the newspaper in the school library, I showed it to our principal. My classical music teacher recommended my name for the award," said an enthusiastic Uma whose motto in life is to become a good citizen of India. One thing that seems to be bothering him is corruption and he feels bad that he is not able to do anything about it. |
While dying, they gave a new life to others
New Delhi, January 18 While their inspiring tales of grit stand as examples for many, there were parents of five children, to be awarded posthumously, who couldn't have wished for anything more than seeing their bravehearts participating in the Republic Day parade next week. Lovely Verma (12) from Koni village (Uttar Pradesh), who saved her two friends from drowning and lost her life in the process was dearest to her mother Anara Devi among her three children. "We feel proud of her brave action but the pain of losing our only daughter is more. She was a student of seventh standard. She had gone to her grandparents' house during last summer and lost her life while saving her friends. My daughter was courageous," told Anara with moist eyes. While consoling her sons Sachin (9) and Gaurav (6) who stood weeping beside her, she added, "Since the fatal day on June 23, 2011, my sons keep remembering her, 'Didi hamein kahaniyan sunati thi…'." Saudhita Barman (11) saved three lives (one sister and two cousins) in West Bengal from drowning in a 12-ft-deep pond and in the process lost her life on August 20, 2010. Her leg slipped and she did not know how to swim. Displaying similar bravery, C Lalduhawma (16) rescued his friend by jumping into a 20-ft-deep pit full of water even as he was not good at swimming while Adithya Gopal (14) managed to give a new life to his friend whose cries for help made him jump into an overflowing river on October 31, 2010. However, Adithya though a good swimmer couldn't fight out the undercurrent of the whirlpool, said his parents. "On that morning, while he was sitting beside the river, he saw his friend crying for help after the water level suddenly increased. He jumped without caring for himself," said Gayatri and K V G Pillai from Arunachal Pradesh, his parents. Adithya will be given the Bapu Gaidhani Award. "Studying in class IX, he was a good student, computer-savvy and loved football apart from swimming. He wanted to become a doctor and serve others. We feel proud but the pain remains - we'll see all these children marching on the Republic Day and miss him all the more," his parents said. Master Kapil Negi (15) from Uttarakhand will be honoured with the prestigious Bharat Award for helping his class fellows cross an overflowing brook following a landslide in which he was trapped and died. Among the 24 children, who will be receiving a medal, certificate and cash award from the Prime Minister prior to the Republic Day, was 11-year-old Prasannta Shandilya from Odisha who saved her parents. She drove away five miscreants who broke into her house in the early morning hours on April 12, 2011, by throwing chilly powder into their eyes. Interestingly, the act was inspired by an episode of CID, said Kalpana Shandilya, Prasannta's mother. She wants to become a fearless IPS officer and her role model is the first woman and former IPS officer Kiran
