New Delhi, January 18
Among the brave children who will get the National Bravery Award 2011, one is Delhi's 12-year-old Uma Shankar whose heroic action saved the lives of five schoolchildren who met with an accident when a jam-packed minibus overturned while taking a U-turn.

It was the initiative of this 10th class student at the accident site on July 12, 2010 that passengers on the DTC bus got up to help in taking the injured to the Sushruta Trauma Centre.

When this young hero dared to help the injured without fearing any police hassle, there were many among the passers-by who chose to be just onlookers.

"I was supposed to take the minibus but preferred to take the bus following it. Around the U-turn when I saw several students trapped under the toppled vehicle, I got down from the bus while many passengers kept looking helplessly. As I pleaded with them, some lifted the minibus while I crawled under the overturned bus and took out the injured," said Uma, who stays in Sonia Vihar.

There was a traffic jam around Kingsway Camp. Many people passing through the way didn't stop their vehicles to carry the injured to the hospital, he said.

"I stood in front of a few vehicles and then they had to stop and took them to the trauma centre. I got stretchers with the help of others and took the victims inside. The next day when I saw the photograph in the newspaper in the school library, I showed it to our principal. My classical music teacher recommended my name for the award," said an enthusiastic Uma whose motto in life is to become a good citizen of India.

One thing that seems to be bothering him is corruption and he feels bad that he is not able to do anything about it.

Given each year to children for their exemplary acts of courage, the National Bravery Award 2011 will be given to 24 young hearts, including eights girls and 16 boys, whose names were announced today at the Indian Council for Child Welfare (ICCW) here.

While their inspiring tales of grit stand as examples for many, there were parents of five children, to be awarded posthumously, who couldn't have wished for anything more than seeing their bravehearts participating in the Republic Day parade next week.

Lovely Verma (12) from Koni village (Uttar Pradesh), who saved her two friends from drowning and lost her life in the process was dearest to her mother Anara Devi among her three children.

"We feel proud of her brave action but the pain of losing our only daughter is more. She was a student of seventh standard. She had gone to her grandparents' house during last summer and lost her life while saving her friends. My daughter was courageous," told Anara with moist eyes.

While consoling her sons Sachin (9) and Gaurav (6) who stood weeping beside her, she added, "Since the fatal day on June 23, 2011, my sons keep remembering her, 'Didi hamein kahaniyan sunati thi…'."

Saudhita Barman (11) saved three lives (one sister and two cousins) in West Bengal from drowning in a 12-ft-deep pond and in the process lost her life on August 20, 2010. Her leg slipped and she did not know how to swim.

Displaying similar bravery, C Lalduhawma (16) rescued his friend by jumping into a 20-ft-deep pit full of water even as he was not good at swimming while Adithya Gopal (14) managed to give a new life to his friend whose cries for help made him jump into an overflowing river on October 31, 2010. However, Adithya though a good swimmer couldn't fight out the undercurrent of the whirlpool, said his parents.

"On that morning, while he was sitting beside the river, he saw his friend crying for help after the water level suddenly increased. He jumped without caring for himself," said Gayatri and K V G Pillai from Arunachal Pradesh, his parents.

Adithya will be given the Bapu Gaidhani Award. "Studying in class IX, he was a good student, computer-savvy and loved football apart from swimming. He wanted to become a doctor and serve others. We feel proud but the pain remains - we'll see all these children marching on the Republic Day and miss him all the more," his parents said.

Master Kapil Negi (15) from Uttarakhand will be honoured with the prestigious Bharat Award for helping his class fellows cross an overflowing brook following a landslide in which he was trapped and died.

Among the 24 children, who will be receiving a medal, certificate and cash award from the Prime Minister prior to the Republic Day, was 11-year-old Prasannta Shandilya from Odisha who saved her parents. She drove away five miscreants who broke into her house in the early morning hours on April 12, 2011, by throwing chilly powder into their eyes.

Interestingly, the act was inspired by an episode of CID, said Kalpana Shandilya, Prasannta's mother. She wants to become a fearless IPS officer and her role model is the first woman and former IPS officer Kiran Bedi.

Tribune News Service

New Delhi, January 18
The student election fervour is back on the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus. However, some delay at the administration's end seems to have kept the parties on tenterhooks.

Parties were sure of starting the election process by mid-January though the formal nod from the administration is still awaited.

In a resolution agreed to by the University General Body Meeting (UGBM) held on January 10, the student community said the JNUSU elections should be conducted within one month and the Joint Struggle Committee should make all efforts to hand over charge to the JNUSU election committee by January 14.

However, the charge is yet to be handed over. Student bodies have already met the vice-chancellor on the matter and will also be holding a protest march to his office tomorrow in this regard.

"There has been a deadlock on the issue for long. Now that the Supreme Court has given us the go-ahead, we are just waiting for the final nod of the JNUSU election committee. Once the election committee takes charge, they will meet and discuss about the process and decide the dates and modalities. The rest will not take time," said Roshan Kishore, general secretary of Students' Federation of India.

Meanwhile, the parties are poll-ready. Late-night meetings at JNU coffee shops and dhabas, discussing publicity plans, etc have become a common feature.

"Campaigning plans are afoot, scores of pamphlets are being prepared and support is being mobilized. Even if delayed slightly, we hope to conduct the elections by January-end or in the beginning of February. We hope nothing comes in the way of elections now. It will surely hurt and anger the students," said another leading AISA leader.

JNUSU's last president before the ban, Sandeep Singh said, "A major achievement of the union has been to usher in a democratic decision-making process in which all the constituents of the university, including ."

The Delhi High Court today sought the response of the city government on a plea to allow three and four- wheelers other than buses, to ply in the lane demarcated for buses on the BRT corridor.

Issuing a notice to the transport department of the Delhi government, a division bench of Acting Chief Justice AK Sikri and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw sought the response by March 7 on a PIL of Nyay Bhoomi, an organisation representing auto drivers, through its president Lt Col BB Sharan.

According to the petition, for a smooth traffic movement on the 5.7-km Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor between Ambedkar Nagar and Moolchand flyover, the government should not restrain vehicles other than buses to ply in the bus lane.

The petitioner said except the non-motorised vehicles like bicycle and cycle rickshaws, three-wheelers and four-wheelers should be allowed to ply in the bus lane.

As per the petitioner, most of the time the bus lane remains free but the situation on the other lanes, meant for cars and other vehicles, was chaotic and people get stuck in jams for hours.

The BRT corridor between Ambedkar Nagar and Moolchand in south Delhi was inaugurated in April 2008.

New Delhi, January 18
Devinder Singh, notoriously known as Bunty Chor, was brought to the Capital by the Delhi police this afternoon. He has been remanded in police custody for two days by a city court.

He was arrested in Bhopal on January 14 near a hotel, where he was staying.

Bunty while being questioned by the Bhopal police claimed that he is an "incarnation of God". He then said that his name is 'Napolean Jesus'. This gave an indication of his mental instability, according to the police.

Sources said that this could be one of his ploys to evade the law. However, some Delhi police officials said that Bunty was upset as his family, girlfriend and the NGO disowned him. They reportedly did not help him start a fresh lease of life.

Bunty entered the world of crime in 1993. He has been involved in five cases of theft and carjacking in the last two months. Furthermore, the thief could also tame dogs, which was a boon in most of the 500 cases of theft, added sources.

At present, he is in the custody of the South-East district police. He is likely to be sent to the South district police station, where he is wanted in several cases of carjacking, according to sources.

Bunty also has a weakness for luxury cars and expensive watches, the sources added.
