Environmental issues should be prime poll agenda: Seechewal
Amritsar, January 17 Showing solidarity with the cause, scores of candidates which included Navjot Kaur Sidhu and Tarun Chugh, both from BJP, OP Soni (Congress) today vowed to take initiative in this direction during a special programme at Sant Singh Sukha Singh Senior Secondary School, here. This programme was conceptualised by ‘Vatavaran Ate Samaj Bachao Morcha Punjab’ and was formed by over 50 NGOs headed by Sant Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal, Giani Kewal Singh (Ex-Jathedar, Damdama Sahib) and Umendra Dutt to impress upon the political parties to commit themselves to work extensively for the promotion of green cover and eradicating social evils. Baba Seechewal said he would campaign among masses and ask voters to ensure their rights from the candidates. He also urged the voters to elect only those candidates who showed "sensitivity" towards the issues related to the state's ecology and promised to do something in this regard. “It is our fundamental right to live under healthy environment and it is the liability of the government to ensure it”, he said. Pointing towards the state's poor rating on environmental front, Seechewal said it should be the moral responsibility of the politicians to save the environment. “The UNO has asked every governing body globally to bring down at least 20 per cent pollution level by 2020. In India, the pollution control board has been constituted in 1974, but the lackluster approach of the board as well as the government has led to the polluting of the environment,” he said. “These circumstances were responsible for spread of cancer. The politicians should vow that they will make sincere efforts to stop the drainage of toxic effluents from industrial belts and sewer water into various water bodies and ensure the setting up of sewage treatment plants. Only then they can claim our vote and support,” he said. Others present on the occasion included Bibi Inderjeet Kaur, chairperson All India Pingalwara Charitable Society, Giani Kewal Singh, Umendra Dutt. |
