Beant Singh’s grandson stages dharna, arrested
Jalandhar, January 10 ACP Naresh Dogra told The Tribune: “The police arrested him and his supporters under Sections 283 of the IPC for allegedly creating nuisance.” Amandeep and his supporters were taken to the New Baradari police station. However, later they were released on bail. Amandeep said: “The Congress has betrayed the voters of late CM Beant Singh’s traditional Assembly segment of Jalandhar Cantonment by allocating ticket to a turncoat Jagbir Brar and ignoring his family members.” Beant Singh’s grandson stated: “It seems that the Congress has forgotten its ideology of giving respect to family members of those leaders who laid their lives for bringing normalcy while fighting terrorism. Like former PMs Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, Beant Singh had also sacrificed his life in 1995 for bringing normalcy in Punjab.” Amandeep said: “Beant Singh had contested elections from Jalandhar Cantonment seat in 1992. When he was killed in Chandigarh, he was elected MLA from this seat. While Beant Singh’s son Tej Prakash Singh successfully contested from this seat in 1997, Gurkanwal fought twice in 2002 and 2007. While she won in 2002, she lost to Jagbir Brar (then SAD candidate) in 2007.” |

Poll
duties
Amritsar, January 10 Vice Chancellor Prof AS Brar had to intervene in the matter after the teaching staff had gone on a protest. The VC confirmed that he had spoken to the Deputy Commissioner Rajat Aggarwal recommending that the teachers be spared from performing poll duties. “We are all bound to abide by the orders of the Election Commission which do not give any exemption to the teachers from performing poll duties, yet I have approached the Deputy Commissioner to find an alternative solution so that our teachers could be spared from election duties. We have submitted a supplementary list for the purpose with the DC office in this respect,” he said. This is the third occasion when the issue was taken up with the Deputy Commissioner. Earlier, a teachers’ delegation had met the DC. Later, Registrar Inderjit Singh had approached the DC with a replacement list. The university had earlier sent a list of around 354 teaching and non-teaching ‘A class’ staff for poll duties. Teachers, who were on the first list, had resented that it is not justified to put them with ordinary polling staff as they have been drawing salaries equivalent to an SDM-level officer. Deputy Commissioner Rajat Aggarwal said duties would be assigned only according to the pay grade, drawn by employees. “A software has been installed in our computers and it segregates the applicants according to the pay scales drawn by them. Therefore, there is no chance of injustice. Secondly, everything was done according to the Election Commission’s guidelines which do not exempt teachers from doing election duties.” |
