Jalandhar, January 13
Even as there are some octogenarians in fray for elections from Jalandhar, the youngest candidate perhaps is 30-year-old Nushika Hans who has decided to take on veterans like Ch Jagjit Singh and Sarwan Singh Phillaur from the reserved Kartarpur seat.

Nushika, more popularly known by her maiden name Sapna, has filed her papers as the candidate from the Ambedkar United Front. A plus two pass candidate, she has been pursuing vocations like stitching and beautician from her residence at Jalandhar Cantonment here for the past few years.

She feels that none of the main political parties have done anything for the uplift of the Dalit community and given a chance, she would ensure better education facilities and coaching centres for the students of the SC community.

“I could not pursue higher education myself as my mother passed away and being the only daughter, I had to look after the household works. But I feel that the betterment of the society is not possible without education for which many like me are left behind owing to lack of proper timely guidance,” she said.

Nushika’s father Kehar Singh has retired as a driver with the PWD. He, too, has been supporting her candidature. The family was excited about her candidature having been cleared today. “The only thing that makes me little uncomfortable is that I now would have three guards around me the day through. I am not used to this,” she laughed.

A novice in politics, she was today seen preparing her speeches and taking a thorough glance of the map of her constituency at her place with her mentors and supporters from her party. She says that she had chalked out a complete plan and would be on job from tomorrow morning.

Oldest candidate

The oldest candidate in the fray from Jalandhar is 81-year old Bhagat Chunni Lal, Deputy Speaker, Vidhan Sabha, who is re-contesting from the Jalandhar (West) constituency on the BJP ticket. The candidate had tried his level best to get the ticket for his son Mahinder Bhagat, but his efforts went in vain.

Khaira, Bibi Jagir Kaur to cross swords yet again
Dharmendra Joshi

Bibi Jagir Kaur, former SGPC chief and SAD candidate, and Congress MLA Sukhpal Khaira will cross swords for the fourth time in Bholath. While Bibi defeated Khaira in 1997 and 2002, Khaira emerged victorious in 2007. The contest between them is expected to be tough this time too. Though Khaira defeated heavyweight Bibi Jagir Kaur in 2007 by 8,864 votes, Bibi Jagir Kaur helped SAD-BJP candidate Som Prakash secure a lead of 10,116 votes from Bholath for the Hoshiarpur (SC) parliamentary seat in 2009.

The constituency saw large-scale development works and both Bibi Jagir Kaur, who is chairperson of the District Development Committee, and MLA Sukhpal Khaira are claiming credit for it.

PROJECTS: Work on several projects, including Polytechnic College at Begowal and widening of the Nadala -Akbarpur, Bholath - Bhogpur and Kartarpur - Bholath roads, has been completed. Desks have been provided to government elementary schools in this constituency. Projects such as an engineering college at Begowal, a sub-divisional complex, a grain market and a hospital at Bholath are underway. Khaira and the Bibi are both taking credit for these projects.

Khaira claims that all development here has been under Centre-sponsored schemes such as Rural Health Mission, Sarv Shikhya Abhiyan and Indira Awas Yojna. On the contrary, Bibi claims all works have been done on CM Parkash Singh Badal’s initiative.

VOX POPULI: While some residents give credit to Bibi for development in the area, others appreciate Khaira for that. People are unhappy at the slow speed of ongoing works such as the laying of sewer pipes at Bholath, Begowal and Dhilwan.

Khaira and Bibi both claim they equipped Youth Health Clubs with gymnasium machines to wean away the youth from drugs. Khaira claims he provided employment to several villagers after filling their forms under MGNREGA. Bibi says several residents of the area have been given jobs in different departments of the government.

Looking Back: Until 2007, this constituency was considered a SAD citadel. Khaira broke into the SAD bastion in 2007. Bibi Jagir Kaur and Khaira have already contested three elections against each other. While Bibi defeated Khaira with a margin of 28,027 and 11,378 votes in 1997 and 2002, respectively, Khaira defeated her by 8,864 votes in 2007.

Post-delimitation, this seat consists of the Bholath tehsil, Dhilwan and Ramidi kanugo circles, the patwar circle Jati Ke of Fathu Dhinga and the Dhilwan Nagar Panchayat in Kapurthala tehsil.
