Youth killed in midnight brawl
Chandigarh, January 13
In a fresh incident of brazen violence, on the rise in the city, particularly during nights, a 28-year-old resident of Sector 55 was murdered following a scuffle on the road outside the Aroma traffic light point at Sector 22 here past night.

Endeavor a mystery
According to eyewitnesses, a speeding Endeavor car was seen at the spot after the scuffle. The police suspected that the accused fled in it, leaving the Scorpio behind. It was being investigated if the Endeavor ran over the youth and killed him.

Two-thirds of the city landmark Sukhna Lake will dry out this year. It may sound shocking but is true. The National Institute of Hydrology (NIH), Roorkee, which is conducting a study on the water body, in its preliminary report submitted to the UT Administration, has stated that nearly two-thirds of the lake will dry out this year.

Panchkula admn to tighten noose around illegal miners
Panchkula, January 13
The district administration Panchkula has decided to tighten noose against those who are indulged in illegal mining. Deputy Commissioner Panchkula, Ashima Brar, has directed the officers of the excise and taxation department to conduct strict checking of the vehicles coming from Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and other neighbouring states at nine check points set up at various places by the department.

Advt norms in Sector 17
The Municipal Corporation will strictly enforce the advertisement control order and zonal control Order in sector 17. A meeting in this regard was attended by the UT Adviser, the Mayor and the Commissioner here on Friday. During the meeting it was decided that the zonal control order will be enforced strictly in the market and the other areas of Sector 17 and the improvement and development work of new plaza and the existing infrastructure in Sector 17 A and B will be completed soon.

A resident’s dream of becoming a doctor turned sour when the Commission on Higher Education, the Philippines, changed the eligibility criteria resulting in the abolition of an MBBS programme. Irked over the loss of precious years, Narinder Kumar, a resident of Sector 19, filed a complaint against Sector 32-based HCMI Education (Healthcare Management International) (opposite party no. 1) and Emilio Aguinaldo College (College of Medicine) (opposite party no. 2) with the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum-I for the redress of his grievances.

Consumer court penalises builder for delaying possession of plot

The Mohali Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has come to the rescue of a flat owner at Ivory Towers in Sector 70 who was forced to pay extra money to get the sale deed of his flat registered as the promoter of the flat, Industrial Cables, failed to provide the relevant documents on time. While directing the promoter to refund an amount of Rs 1,10,500 the forum comprising BS Mehandiratta, president, Dr SS Dhaliwal and HK Ghuman, both members, held the promoter responsible for deficiency in service.

Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADJ) of Ludhiana Deepti Gupta met with an accident when her Esteem car was hit by a truck at the Kali Bari light point in Sector 31 here this evening. The police has registered a case of rash and negligent driving against the truck driver who has been identified as Pal Singh.

Sumit Nagal along with Naoki Nakagawa of Japan lifted the boys’ doubles title of ITF Junior-1 Tennis Tournament (Grade 3) being played at the CLTA Tennis Courts, Sector 10, here today.
The winning pair defeated Adriaan Du Toit of Republican South Africa and Jeroen Royakkers from Belium 6-4 and 6-2. On the other hand, pair of Oleksandra Korashvili of Ukraine and Le Roux Republican South Africa defeated Augustine-Benito (Spain) and Stojanovic (Serbia) by a margin of 7-5, 6-2, to lift the crown of girls’ (doubles) category. The Indian players had mixed fortunes as top seed Rishab Agarwal took his appointed place in the boy’s singles final and eighth seed Simran Kaur Sethi made her exit from the girl’s single event.

Pande’s ton adds to Punjab’s troubles

Punjab bowlers found it hard to stop Maharashtra batsman JS Pande to score an unbeaten ton during the four day quarter-final match of Cooch Behar Trophy for boys (U-19).

The cricket team of St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, defeated the Mohali Cricket Academy (MCA) XI, Mohali, by eight wickets to enter the finals of 4th Vivek Cricket Trophy, being held here today.
Batting first, the loosing side scored a total of 77 runs in allotted slot of 20 overs. Swarn scored 22 runs for the team while Jaspreet remained unbeaten on 11 runs. Talinder, Jagpreet and Himanshu took two wickets each for the team. In reply, the winning side scored 78 runs after loosing two wickets in 9.3 overs. Lovish (39), Gauraunak (18) and Gaurav (14) were the main scorers for the team. For the bowling side, Ankur claimed two wickets. Lovish of St Stephens School was adjudged as man of the match.
