 Mukerian MC EO transferred
Tribune News Service

Mukerian, December 9
The local bodies department has finally swung into action and has transferred the executive officer (EO) of the Mukerian Municipal Council for his alleged role in a land grab case.

The department has shifted EO Adarsh Kumar to the Phagwara Municipal Council in less than a month after the Hoshiarpur Deputy Commissioner Deepinder Singh ordered Mukerian Sub-Divisional Magistrate Rahul Chaba to conduct an inquiry in the alleged land grab case.

The DC had also asked the SDM to examine EOs role and other officials of the civic body who allowed the mutations and registration of the ‘disputed land’ without making diary entries in the land register.

The Tribune had reported that a lobby of politically connected persons were grabbing a chunk of prime land in connivance with officials of local civic body in Tikhowal Mohalla. Capt Karnail Singh, deputy director, local government, claimed that the EO might have been shifted due to his long stay at Mukerian. He, however, revealed that the Hoshiarpur district administration was investigating into the matter and the local government would take action against the EO only after he was found guilty in the SDM’s report. The Punjab and Haryana High Court has already passed a stay order in this regard, he added.

Meanwhile, the SDM today started investigations into the alleged land grab case after collecting evidences from the parties involved in the case. The SDM said sufficient time was given to all parties for submitting documents in support of their claims on the land. “After going through actual land records and other documents, the report will be submitted to the DC next week,” claimed the SDM.

The commuters are left with no option but to take the link roads in rural areas to reach their destination. As a result, the one-and-a-half hour smooth ride between the two cities on the GT Road has now turned into an arduous journey through link roads, which are also facing traffic snarls as the entire load of traffic has been shifted.

The private vehicles as well as the public transport buses are taking two routes, first via Sri Hargobindpur and second via Kapurthala and Goindwal Sahib. The first route leads to an extended journey of around 25 km while the second has an extra 40-km travel. The travel time too has gone up from 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours and 30 minutes, which may further increase if one comes across traffic jams on the link roads.

The New Delhi-Lahore bus too has been taking an alternative route since the day the blockade began.

Amritsar (rural) SSP Gurmeet Chauhan said they would not like to disclose the route for security reasons, but added that the service was going on smoothly. He, however, admitted that it is taking an extra time of about an hour due to diversion in traffic.

The farmers’ protest further added to the people’s woes today as one of the alternative routes passing through Goindwal Sahib was also blocked by the protesters. The development left the commuters fuming as they blamed both the farmers as well as the government for the inconvenience they were facing.

At Goindwal Sahib, Resham Kaur, a commuter, said she had to walk four km to catch another bus to her destination while truck drivers, ferrying cement from Himachal Pradesh, said they were stuck for the last four days and were left with no money to have their meals. The administration’s plea to the protesters to lift the blockade in view of ‘Puranmashi’ (full moon) tomorrow fell on deaf ears. Scores of devotees visit Goindwal Sahib from different parts of the state on ‘Puranmashi’.

Meanwhile, the devotees of Dera Radha Soami Satsang have started reaching Beas from different parts of the country in large numbers for the dera’s programme scheduled to take place on December 11. They too are having a tough time reaching the dera as they have to alight from buses at quite a distance due to the blockade and then walk on foot, carrying their luggage. The devotees with small kids are facing more problem as they have to carry their children as well through the blockade. The areas around Beas are the worst hit due to the blockade, as petrol pumps in Beas, Rayya, Baba Bakala, Khalchian, Tangra, Mehta and Sathiala have gone dry. The people are also facing shortage of LPG while students and employees are forced to walk miles to reach their destinations.
